Try Samurize or the tons of widgets available from yahoo, google etc.

Don't know about the desktop specifically but http://www.x-rates.com is one of the most useful sites for exchange rates and history that I have found.

yes, I want x-rates graph on my desktop, but x-rates doesnt update it frequently, the values are old sometimes!
