Alan: Here at DC we have a policy that people can recommend their own software, as long as they mention they are related to the product. From a quick google search, it's obvious that you are associated with the product, and most probably its author (see here).

Another reason to spend money for another file manager. Don't support DOpus-like capitalism.

I just don't get the complaints - Opus costs about the same as a dinner for two at a reasonable restaurant here in Aus. I know which I get more value from. DonL has the right to charge any price he likes and users have the right to decide whether they feel the product worthwhile. Personally I don't like the fact that there's no upgrade path from Home to Pro and I think that might be a mistake. Still, that's just my opinion and as I said, DonL can try whatever marketing methods he likes.

Sure, but it is just a file manager (although a good one indeed). $74.95 (still a quite high value in real money) is too much IMHO. He could ofc take the double of that, and someone could willingly pay that. But ... come on: $74.95 for a file manager?!
(Yep, I take the lifetime license as my point here. To me, all other license types are just paid trials.)

I spend a lot of my computer time using a file manager, it's easily the most used application on the pc. Compared to Office 2007 which I use infrequently I get good value from my $85AUD for Opus. I installed XYPlorer some time ago for a brief look and personally I don't see $75USD value in it, but someone who uses it all the time may disagree. Realistically, it's 2009 here in Australia and $75USD doesn't get you much no matter what you try to buy.

Office 2007... not worth a single cent. However, back to topic: Right, a file manager is the most-used application on most systems. But does that mean that it automatically has to be more expensive than other, maybe even more sophisticated applications on your system? If a price would depend on the product's usage, I wonder if the Firefox guys were millionaires... personally I don't see $75USD value in it At least you got my point here.

I read a while back that Firefox was making a fair bit of money due to the referrals that using the Google search widget generates. So there's not necessarily a need to charge a price to make a good income. In 2006 Mozilla paid out about $20 Million to 90 employees - so the average is over $200K per employee. Of course that's not all necessarily paid to the employees (some for benefits and taxes I'd think). But I also wouldn't assume that the distribution was even though, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are one or two millionaires in there. - http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=6715

Firefox generates millions of dollars. personally I don't see $75USD value in it At least you got my point here.
Not really, you're saying that it's over-priced. I'm saying that for me it's not worth the money - it's not my preferred manager so it wouldn't be worth $10 to me - let alone $75. Others who use it all the time are easily getting $75 worth of value from it. Forgetting for a moment the brand of file manager, regardless which you prefer, software which is used constantly is easily worth the price of dinner and a movie.

There is little reason that software should be treated differently than other commodities (unless you want to get into the open source and FOSS debates ) DOpus is, if not the most expensive, among the most expensive of its kind. Whether the feature set justifies it and sets it apart from others of its kind is only up to each individual user.

I do miss some things from DOpus (didnt upgrade to version 9, bought XY instead) but I suspect I'd also miss things if I was migrating the other direction. XY is much more affordable and being developed very actively. If I had the money though, I'd buy both

I have a license for several file managers, but the one I keep actually using besides Explorer is Q-Dir (the Unicode version). Now at version 4.28 Read: http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Freeware/Q-DirGet: http://www.softwareok.com/?Download=Q-DirSteady as a rock, and with this oh so useful "Quadruped-View" window ;-)

Because of Quizo QT Tabbar I never got to realize that CFi Shell Toys includes a magnificent, tabbed, full Explorer "replacement"! click to enlarge: -comes included with bunches of shell extensions and tools, and its own Control Panel. Pricing: First license: GBP £20.00 (approx. US $29.00, EUR €24.00) Additional licenses: GBP £5.00 each (approx. US $7.00, EUR €6.00) Q&A: Which versions of Windows can ShellToys be used with? You can use ShellToys with 64-bit and 32-bit versions of Windows from Windows 98 onwards, except Windows NT. That means it can be used with Windows 98, 98 Second Edition, Millennium Edition, 2000, and all 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows XP, Server 2003, Server 2008, Vista and 7. Does ShellToys support 64-bit versions of Windows? Yes, an x64-compatible edition of ShellToys is available from our Download page.

For awhile I kept trying this one. Looks like the author tries to perfect it. But it seems like every time I try to do something while something else is happening, the window goes white and it stop responding(well, not "every time" but a high enough percentage that I gave up on it.) I like the idea of it. Just seems like the threading is too fragile. edit: this may be exacerbated by large files. I tend to move around multi-GB files. If all the drag & drop are trivial files then it handles it. It just seems like once you put a load on it by having a long file copy in the background, it can't deal with it unless you just leave it sit 'til completion.
