Anybody use FileHippo Update Checker?
« on: July 07, 2007, 05:53 AM »
I previously went and had a look after reading this post, but hadn't really had a chance to check it properly. Until now, and the first programme I check is really weird!

The programme in question is Spyware Terminator.

First: FileHippo reported that my version was way out of date (especially for a programme that is meant to auto-update):

Secondly: I went and checked the programme:

Finally: I thought that was odd, so I checked their website:

Isn't that amazing? No one can agree on what the latest version is: even the developer!

I have used Filehippo update checker 3 or 4 times so far, and it seems to come up with the correct newer file version every time.
It even will list Beta versions in a separate paragraph.
I like the free service and am going to continue using it.

FileHippo tends to offer newer versions of the software before they were announced, it happened with Opera 9.21, for example. Regarding SpywareTerminator, it's probably because they are using different servers for updating the application and for new downloads, and they didn't add the necessary files for the update. But this is only a guess.

I use it too.  I haven't found any issues with it, other than what would be expected...If the software is not in the database, they don't check to see if it has an update.  (I know, this could be considered a "duh" statement, but many people don't think about what is needed behind the scenes to accomplish this type of program, so they assume it works for all software.)

A good guess too! It's what I'd expect.

I;ve been using it for about 2 months and have found that it works well.  Sometimes it even shows updates that are not needed.  That is okay as it is so thorough.
