IDEA: Graffiti Picture ScreenSaver
« on: September 06, 2005, 06:20 PM »
Hi guys.

There R many screensavers that display pictures in a folder & it's subfolders.  What I would like 2 C is 1 that scrolls along the longest axis of a picture.

For example, some pictures on the page http://www.graffiti.org/peru/peru_6.html R much longer than they R high.  The screensaver I currently use fits the pictures 2 the screen but this means the detail cannot B seen.  The picture http://www.graffiti....rg/peru/peru_008.jpg falls into this category.  It would B great if the picture would B zoomed in 2 fit the height & then scrolled.

Thanx 4 looking.

Hey, can you imagine 360 degree rotating and changing panoramas ... and not just screen savers ... how about wallpaper too.

Now that would be cool!

Hey Mouser.

Glad U think so.

Can I ask in advance 4 an option that 50% of the time displays a mirror of a picture instead of the original.  This provides some variety & also I am learning 2 draw & I find being able 2 C pictures forward & reversed helps the mind decipher what it is seeing.  If that makes any sense. :-[

I may B getting ahead of myself.  I don't know how far anyone wants 2 pursue this.  But, I would love it if this screensaver could function as a slideshow.  That way if a displayed picture gets your attention U can use the arrow keys 2 go back through the pictures 2 get 2 it.  Then use the Delete key 2 send a picture 2 the recycle bin.  Then another key 2 continue the slideshow (maybe P for pause/continue?).

ZoomSaver scrolls large images accross the screen.

It's not really a screensaver, but if you add it to your Scheduled tasks, it will work like one. The upside to this is that you can have it running in the background, scrolling images accross you desktop all the time!

There's a lot of settings in the ini-file, but the most important is the
path= to your image files, and the
ontop= which controls the "screensaver" mode/"desktop" mode.

In "screensaver" mode you can also use the following keys: Space=Pause, Left=Previous image, Right=Next image, Del=Delete image, Esc=Quit

Thanks, that works fine. Good fun potential ;)

Actually my files are wallpaper size (I specifically chose a folder where I store wallpapers).

If this is running on the desktop is there anyway it could be made to run behind desktop items?

Yep, that's what I was think scrolling - or even x-fading - wallpaper for the desktop.

I have to say though a priority for that sort of thing would have to be low system impact -you don't want your wall paper eating 50% of CPU

 I've given up! I can make the wallpaper scroll beautifully, but I can't stop the icons from flashing like crazy!  Anyone know how?

now catch the icon ........ <BANG>

 But when I think about it, it would be possible to take a screenshot of the desktop, make the background transparent and display it at the back, scrolling the images behind it and allowing the clicks to pass though to the real icons behind!

I'll be back...

Hey Skrommel.

Cool (as always)!

Is it possible to not have a gap between the pictures?  So that they actually touch?

When a picture is paused & you press the right arrow to go to the next picture the current picture stays paused.  Can you make it unpause & go straight to the next picture with just the one keystroke?

In random mode the previous image is not remembered so you cannot use the left arrow key to go back to it.  Is it possible to have a setting to remember the last 20 (?) pictures?

I use CacheMan to monitor the amount of free memory on my system.  After running ZoomSaver for 5 minutes the free memory drops from 500MB to 80MB.

Thanx again.

:) I'll look into sorting prior to running, but I don't know if I like to switch the scrolling direction to have the pictures touching when scrolling in different directions, one right, the other down...  I just uploaded a new version that stops pause using both space, right and left.

About the memory leak, does it clean up when you quit ZoomSaver?

The gap between pictures is dead time.  I had envisioned that the pictures would be in contact when I made the initial suggestion.  I think it would look cool to fill the screen with pictures that scroll sometimes in random directions.

When I close ZoomSaver the memory is instantly recovered.  You can download the free version of CacheMan here if you wish to see for yourself.  http://www.outertech.com
