Mapping websites
« on: June 07, 2007, 04:44 PM »
I'm looking for a tool, web-based or not, that will take a URL and then generate a visual, tree-like/mindmap-like visual representation of the site's hierarchical structure.
Here's quick update.. it doesn't have to be purely visual. If it can give me a nicely laid out directory listing or hierarchical outline type auto-generated site-map, that's cool too :)

Ideas?

I've no idea (some might even say clueless) but it sounds very interesting and would be a useful addition to the software arsenal.

Dapper isn't really a mapping program in the same sense as the original request, but it's a very interesting and polished service.  Watch the screencast to see what it does: http://www.dapper.net/dapperDemo/

Basically it will let you tell it how to extract data from a website and create new feeds from it, in various formats.  Some very slick ajax stuff going on here.  Nice find, Keynell.

Intellitamper is what I use...and it is free.

It is no longer being developed but can be found archived here:

Hi,
something like
http://www.visualcom...ity.com/vc/index.cfm (Beautiful)
or as Java Applet
http://www.aharef.info/static/htmlgraph/
or as offline Tool?
http://www.conceptdr...web_site_mapping.php

The referenced offline tool, Conceptdraw, seems to come closest to what I was looking for. The screenshots don't show a whole lot, but it might be worth a shot.
I'm quite surprised how hard it appears to be to find a utility like this. After all, it sems this would be perfect coding practice for someone looking to solidify an understanding of recursion...

Is this stuff really free? I wanted to download the program but saw a note about an expiry date. Is it a trial version?

You have to download, install, and activate before the expiry time or you don't get it for free.

You can not install or reinstall after that time. And the expiry time you see on that page isn't the real expiry time...that is just the download expiry on that file's hosting. The real expiry time is on the program page on GiveAwayOfTheDay, which is only 1 day.

If for any reason you mess up your OS and have to format and start from scratch, you will not be able to reinstall it.

So, this is an extended trial that lasts till you mess up your OS, which for some people that make regular backup images of their OS partition, could be forever.
