some useful but less-known software. share your list!!!
« on: January 29, 2019, 04:39 AM »
Idk anyone here talked about this topic or not. but its my favorite topic for years.
Thanks for BGM's suggestion JetToolbar its a tab launcher. the only thing I don't like it is that it cant be active the tab by hover it, in this situation stablauncher is a great alternative.
Then I got an idea I always have. what about we share our software collection! :P
Idk what exactly less-known means, it can be really less-know or just less-known to yourself but great useful tools you have found. Or something like files2folder which is famous in the dc forum but may less-known outside.

But still I made some rules, the software must be:
  • Less-known of course!!(that means it is seldom mentioned in the blog site like Ghacks&lifehacker)
  • It should be old age(non-essential) but still works on the windows 7,8,or10
  • Youd better give the download location
  • Screenshot always welcome
  • A short description is needed

Now I provide parts of my list here(actully I don't know whether my list is followed the 4 rules above or not, but that should be a good start, hmmmm... :))

NetMeterEvo_200 network speed meter. portable with simple function

Pandoc the most powerful text converter but seems seldom mentioned(if it is really well-known then forget about this one)

texter from lifehacker my personal favorite text expander, written in AHK

clipstep Best simple clipboard manager!! its original from skrommel s AHK script, but l like this modified version. also you may say clipjump is better and more powerful. but i like something just simple and function.
I found another great alternative Klipp3r!, you should try it.

Desktop Ticker RSS scroll on you screen

Link Shell Extension creat hardlinks, junctions, synbolic links.... But i personal use it with dropbox!

Jasc Animation Shop it has not updated since 2004, but works fine on my windows 10 1809. Best gif editor in my mind

VideoWatermarkPro i don't know much about video editor, but i always use it to add subtitles watermark to the video(it can do much more)

radial menu written in AHK, my must have app.

Pointofix it makes you easy to make a demo tutorial video. from Germany

quick macro AHK alternarive. aims to automates almost everything. sometimes I found it much better than AHK, its the free trail software.
Below is a demo about radial menu,Pointofix, and quick macro

Added in Date: 2019/2/19 (all from the reply)

Thanks for creating this topic, should be interesting.

DK how well-known this is but...
Advanced System Font Changer can be handy, it can easily change the font sizes in Windows 10 now that Microsoft dropped its own interface. Saves poking around in the registry. It can change desktop icon spacing also.

If you have a need for it, RapidEE makes it much easier to examine or edit your environment variables. We have folks that have to switch their path variable around for different (old) versions of Oracle on their workstations and this makes it a much simpler process. Doesn't need installation, all you need is the exe.

thx for ur reply and share
yeah, actually i don't know what "well-known" mean either. I don't want to this "well-known" push you guys too much. well, maybe it should be developed in a small group(like in a forum etc..), or it is great on windows2000 xp vista but still rocks today, or you just thought it is less-known and should be spread! anyway, you should just share your list(maybe only contains one is fine). and i think we can figure it out!!
So the most important thing is that you need to share yours, the most great software i found is never come from a topic but a discussion!! before that you need share yours!

If you have a need for it, RapidEE makes it much easier to examine or edit your environment variables. thx :-*, never used this, so at least less-known to me :D. I like its size and also potable.
since Im a quick macro user, and i use some folder switching tools, this help me edit my favorite folders list much easier.

i explore the old forum topic a lot, the most annoy thing is that the download link is no longer available anymore, i saw a lot of people complain this.
things change until i found this great extension Wayback Machine, it becomes my favorite chrome extension!!! i hope it can help people who don't know about this.
it can open some broken url and help you get the missing files!!!
you can know its power by trying to download this DCPostNotifierLite4

some useful but less-known software. share your list!!!

11½ years ago I tried something similar: "Your most used SPECIAL programs" http://www.donationc....msg123024#msg123024
-not unknown programs, but different / obscure / special ones.

You might find parts of it interesting:

This thread is not what I expected at all!  I thought I had a good idea of what would be listed here, but I am seeing a lot of surprises!

I intend to come back in a couple of days, to answer your initial question.

this could be a new topic, but i just want to post it here.
i always love this kind of software:sort or run files based on type.

the reason i come back to this is that i found these(from wr975 #5 build-in config) two(skwire. needs config) topic.
we know a great soft from lifehacker Belvedere, but have you ever heard about clipboardmonitor from Germany? its not a clipboard manager, it just figure out ur clipboard with email, url, files path, just look at the demo below.

if you are a TC user you may familar with this kind of software, F4MiniMenu(AHK), ChoiceEditor, Open File shell for TC, Edit Redirector(my option) and F4Menu...can enhance the F4 on TC.

while clipboardmonitor is too simple and a little buggy on my windows 10. you may try...

Candy a great great and great handy software from China.written in AHK. it is a kind of difficult to use but really powerful!! it can make any different format files open in different you own configured menu. it is much better than clipboardmonitor when deal with text content.

Since Candy is difficult to use, there are many software based on Candy, i only mention RunAny here. easy to use. you can see several demo gifs there.

so, there are many great software all over the world but don't know by people in other countries. to share with others is the only solution.

The MassiGra software does not seem to have an option to change the language to English. That makes the software much harder to use for users that are not familiar with the Japanese language. I assume it is Japanese, because the download file is hosted on a Japanese server.

yes! it is officially Japanese language support only. I guess that's the reason why it is less-known in other countries :D

SpeQ Mathematics
this may help you when your high school child ask you a mathematics question :D.

WICLEANUP(download link only)
cleaning up the leftover installer files in c:\Windows\Installer. I need to tell you that you must be careful when you use it !!!

Reso
another small size portable software from Bcheck. running an app at different resolution. maybe it can help when you run a windows2000 soft on windows 10.

Link Snack from DC!!
any RocketDock funs here? have you ever get an error message "The operating system denied access to the specified file." and fail to launch some shortcuts? then try this it should be work! i tried several ways to create shortcuts(hard links, synbolic links...but none of them can solve RocketDock's this bug) Link Snack is the only solution i found.

VirtualReg Managerand a very good website
it creates and edits virtual registry files in XML format. I don't know whether this soft is useful, but im wondering if it is possible to covert the xml to reg files. then we can use this soft as test or backup and import it to the real regedit.

continue...

Of course you also must have a close look at skrommel's 116 applications: http://www.dcmembers.../skrommel/downloads/ (wrong release dates)

skrommel is famous especially when talking about AHK. his website is mentioned and recommended in the AHK documents and many many others. since you mention skrommel here, i want to also recommend these archive of lost AHK script, someone may have interest in it.

another small size portable software from Bcheck.

I still use bCheck's HoeKey hotkey program.  I don't use a lot of general hotkeys, but when I change to another computer, I'll probably replace HoeKey with HotkeyP as it's easier to configure, updated rather more often, and probably more powerful.

OK, let me turn to folder and shortcuts launcher (also open/save file dialog enhancement)

Quick Macro and powerpro can do this thing well, but i always wanna try this kind of software

i tried Folder Menu 3 from TaiWan, I should be a best solution but it has bug on windows 10(menu 1/1.5 doesnt work, only menu 2 mod works fine) and havent been updated for years. So...
i also tried direct folder(freemium), Quick Cliq from here(but there is no settings for opening a direction in the current tab), Chameleonfolder. i saw a lot of people here use FileBox eXtender which seems cant use as portable. maybe a good alternative FlashFolder, since i dont wanna make my right content menu complex, i dont like these same function software like Fast Folder Access.

withQuick Pop Menu(portable)
QuickWayToFolders(ptb), no middle mouse click support. actually i only like it can filter files in folder, this is really useful when i have a portable folder with a lot of software in it.

added in 19/02/16: i forgot to say that RadialMenu can do the same thing and much convenient, just hold the right button and swipe up.

Chameleonfolder.
That looks like Chameleon Startup Manager - not quite the same thing as ad hoc launchers?

It's hardly little-known any more, but the best dialog box extender that I've seen is Listary.  I particularly like its ability to integrate with many file managers, so I can steer a dialog box to whatever folder I'm looking at in my file manager.  There's a portable version.

Quick Pop Menu
My most-used launcher is Horst Schaeffer's PopSel, and occasionally his Qsel.  They're both portable, with
Automatic drive letter handling on USB Flash Drives
.

add:i recognize it when i see its screenshot, i used to find circledock alternative then got this result. but the eset just stops me to download it. anyway, any application launcher always welcome :D

Keypirinha:

Deadbeef (for Linux):

Keyirinha - dat is a Brazilian drink/cocktail, which has gotten me several times into trouble. In a similar fashion as shots of tequila...  :P
