Windows 9 build 9841 screenshots and details leak

Who at Microsoft keeps using eye-bleeding colors? What's with the Spoiled-Apricot brown?

I so miss 1998-2003's movies when computing was supposed to be cool. Seriously, that could be a fun project for someone - re-map Win ___ 's ugly design into sliding stylish TV/Movie type UI's. The buttons would map 1-1, but you could have your choice of skins, say: Transformers, Matrix, Johnny Mnemonic, and Species 8472!

One variant could have the start menu be triggered from the middle of the screen, and then it flowers outward like a firework blast. Or maybe a Stargate.

CLOAKING!!!

This is wicked cool:

http://www.rochester...nge-of-angles-70592/

Quote
‘Cloaking’ device uses ordinary lenses to hide objects across range of angles

...

To build your own Rochester Cloak, follow these simple steps:

lens diagram

For their demonstration cloak, the researchers used 50mm achromatic doublets with focal lengths f1 = 200mm and f2 = 75mm
  • Purchase 2 sets of 2 lenses with different focal lengths f1 and f2 (4 lenses total, 2 with f1 focal length, and 2 with f2 focal length)
  • Separate the first 2 lenses by the sum of their focal lengths (So f1 lens is the first lens, f2 is the 2nd lens, and they are separated by t1= f1+ f2).
  • Do the same in Step 2 for the other two lenses.
  • Separate the two sets by t2=2 f2 (f1+ f2) / (f1— f2) apart, so that the two f2 lenses are t2 apart.

NOTES:

  • Achromatic lenses provide best image quality.
  • Fresnel lenses can be used to reduce the total length (2t1+t2)
  • Smaller total length should reduce edge effects and increase the range of angles.
  • For an easier, but less ideal, cloak, you can try the 3 lens cloak in the paper.

Parents sign away first born children for free wi-fi

We may need a thread for not-so-silly posts.   Semi-silly stuff?

That is why I thought of the "semi-silly stuff" thread. Not all of the pictures I have like that are as lightly humorous as that and I wanted to avoid complaint that they weren't silly enough for silly humor.

I think as long as it's not politico-religious based in an overt way, it's fine for silly humor.  The line isn't *that* fine that it's not obvious when something doesn't belong.

Just glancing at all this, there seems to be a bit of scare-monger language going here.

"The bottle is enough to kill X adults".

Uh ... well ... you're supposed to take a couple tea/tablespoons or 2 pills at a time, not whole bottles of stuff. We sorta know better than taking whole bottles of stuff in other categories, so why is this one so different?

I'd think the right answer is "Got it. Take at most 2 at a time, 30 servings, so it lasts me a month". You don't take the whole bottle. That's the stuff of B TV shows. Put another way, the whole point of GNC is they sell huge cans of stuff ... but it's supposed to last you. They're the BJ/Costco of health stuff. So saying anything about the whole container is meaningless.

^^ Mmm, caffeine abuse. I love it.
Same with seriously addictive solvent abuse (something I am ashamed to admit that I do on a daily basis).

The 7 Most Dangerous Caffeinated Products

So why the hell would they powder caffeine if they didn't want you to snort it?

Somebody should try this so that I can find out if this short-circuits your brain or if you go into a permanent coma once it wears off.

(Admittedly showing my age> I really don't see a need for having a bidirectional relationship with an appliance... I hit a button...it performs a function...we're good.

However I do agree with Haunter in the comments:
Quote from: Haunter in the comments
This article should be best search assistant because that's all you talked about was using the search feature, phone assistant helps you do more than search, creating alarms, appointments/events, calling people, etc.

They really could have done a better comparison of the RW functionality of the devices...instead of throwing the book at only one aspect of user interaction.

Man I really wish I could save the life of an eccentric millionaire or something and have chunks of money to spread into a ton of "mad science" projects! Inspired by Byte and his "my scale has a HyperTerminal connection and stuff" thread elsewhere, I got to thinking - there's a level of "hacker minimax' where if I could give some bucks to 1000 people, you could do crazy things from computer enabled 2 foot diameter Moslem clocks to DayQuil bottles that can record your observations about your cough!

I'm blinded by science!

Oh... if only... I would love to have the resources to pursue some things...

This fellow seems to be on to some pretty cool stuff:

Now THAT is seriously cool!  8) I would love to see that stuff become commercialized.

Buddy's Wikipedia article is complete garbage as it make no real mention of that cool stuff. (Gee... go figure... WP is just crap.)

If you are into this stuff...and/or similar devices, you should check: http://www.free-energy-info.tuks.nl

If you visit...you are transported back to the late nineties. The layout is from those times, even the hosting feels the same. Slightly better than the GeoCities era of the internet. Doesn't necessarily mean the quality of the content is bad.

He's actually got quite a few domain names for it. I've checked them out briefly, but should probably check more.

God only knows if these guys are on to something, but if they are, they're on to the most important discovery in human history.

I've seen tonnes of these kinds of videos, but those above really were intriguing.
