Ant Renamer seems nice -- source code is available too  I hope to verify whether it works well portably and under Wine.

Wow that's a serious looking app you have there :-) I've been using AdvancedRenamer for ages, it does everything I want very easily ... but I'll be downloading this just to have a play with that astonishing amount of options...

If you happen to be an emacs user, perhaps the following may appeal: https://emacs.wordpress.c.../editing-your-file-names/In dired mode C-x C-q will let you leverage the functionality of emacs to edit the file names in the dired buffer. When you're done, C-c C-c to commit your changes...
