We are going offline on January 18 to protest the SOPA bill. I always wonder how much good such things do, but we stand with our brothers and sisters at Wikipedia, and they have determined that a blackout protest is important -- so we will join with them. Can someone explain the logic to me?  In opposition of legislation that could force the shutdown of parts the internet, we're going to voluntarily shutdown parts of the internet?  I don't like SOPA/PIPA and I'm opposed to them, for sure. But I just don't understand how voluntarily submitting to what you're opposing is really any useful sign of opposition.  That would be like opposing a war by signing up to join the military. Or showing your disapproval of McDonald's by having everybody buy a Big Mac with fries and a shake. It just doesn't make sense to me. |

While it may not really make much sense to shut down DC (in that one small act), I think it's a good thing for sites like Wikipedia to shut down and show people what SOPA and PIPA and PROTECT IP and that other draconian one whose name I forget, will give them. Shutting down DC in protest is a good sign of solidarity. I think all of us here "get it" and understand that censorship is bad, and free speech is good -- but that's not the point. I think mouser would have to say exactly what his motivations are, but as I see it, it looks like a show of solidarity. Think about it this way, if one person were to protest, oh, say plastic bottles by throwing 1 plastic bottle on the steps of city hall, it would be pretty meaningless. Get 10,000 people to do it, and you have a statement. If we all add our 1 grain of sand to the pile, we'll build a mountain. |

I also fail to see the value of this, but I guess it makes a statement of sorts
I can't help wondering if there's a better way of registering a protest - I have no idea if it's possible, but is it possible to block access to certain domains (government, media, RIAA, etc). While it could be seen as tit for tat, it's also a demonstration of what might be expected if the legislation goes through...
just a thought

Given that a lot of illegal video is captured from the studios own streaming websites - would a simple solution to reducing piracy be for ISPs to block the studio websites at DNS level? Of course the studio wouldn't get the revenue for the streaming either - but that is a minimal side effect given that they are so worried about privacy.
