Clipart collections, and/or image converters
« on: August 30, 2011, 09:38:46 PM »
the support monster has visited again, and I have been asked to source some clipart for my mother-in-law

I figured that there would be plenty available online, and there is, but I have no interest in sourcing them one a time...

I did find a few bundles (notably the Open Clipart collection), however significant parts of what I found are in SVG format.  While this may not be an issue for a computer literate user, it will present significant issues for the lady in question.

so, 2 questions

does anyone know of a source of good (free?) clipart bundles
does anyone know of a utility that can process batch conversions from SVG to something else (PNG?).  I guess that the 'ultimate' (?) solution would be able to convert to wmf (or another format native to office), even if it needs to be done in a couple of steps

They are not bundles, but many of the stock photo sites also have clipart.

Not only can you find some free ones on the pages listed here, but they are also ok for commercial use, without attribution: http://cranialsoup.b...ock-photo-sites.html

I come across clipart all the time on my favorite site in the list: http://www.freestock...mp;a=all&set=all

Try the Windows version of ImageMagick.

I think your best approach may be to take SVG resources and convert to WMF. SVG is a more modern format and will be increasingly what is used, I think. Hopefully Office will support it at some point. In the meantime, maybe this: http://sk1project.or...product=uniconvertor

on the offchance that it's useful to someone, the answer appears to be inkscape

SVG is native to inkscape, and it can output to EMF (Enhanced MetaFile) which is native to Office...

no batch functionality, but it can be processed from the command line

If I understand correctly what you are looking for, I can recommend "ConversionSVG" converts SVG files in series (directory an sub-directory) and individually to PNG, the version 0.8.0.0 works better than version 1.0, is an old program "java" does not work on all Windows versions, is a "Inkscape-front-backend" and Inkscape is still necessary.
If you only to process an image you can also use the GIMP "svg-plugin".
You can find all of sourceforge.net and gimp.org for GIMP.

http://sourceforge.n...t/projects/inkscape/

http://sourceforge.n...nversionsvg/0.8.0.0/

WMF, "as opposed to SVG and PNG image" does not allow transparency, even EMF (Enhanced Windows Metafile), WMF is a very old format, later to convert to emf, gif, pds, tif or jpg etc... "in series", you can use IrfanView (conversion in series), or XNconvert.

Inkscape is a great program like the GIMP! Ciao!
