Gmail Adds New Chats Feature
« on: February 07, 2006, 01:36 AM »
Source:http://mail.google.com/mail/help/chat.html

Just saw this over on digg
http://www.digg.com/...ds_New_Chats_Feature

        Cut and Paste....
    *  Add contacts and invite your friends to chat from Quick Contacts
    * See when your friends are online
    * Set your status to busy, sleepy, angry or whatever. Even sneezy.
    * Get Google Talk to make free voice calls too. It's completely synchronized with Quick Contacts
    * Go off the record when you're chatting so nothing gets saved to anyone's Gmail account

I Barely use either,Google Talk or Gmail (fell in love with fastmail.fm;ftp support is freakin sweet)these days but it's inovative, none the less.

Hmm,just noticed they changed the logo too,Gmail talk "beta"

and it can save your chats too if you want for referring back to them later.. does seem like a clever idea.

Why'd you add chat to Gmail?

Communications these days can be frustrating. You exchange a bunch of emails with someone when really, you'd rather just get an answer instantly. You use one program for your email, and another one (or two or three) for IM. You can't remember who said what to you where. And sometimes you can't even remember who wallaby385 in your buddy list is.

Gmail's chat features address a lot of these problems. You don't have to use another program or switch between email and IM--it's all on the same interface. The friends you're already emailing the most show up in your Quick Contacts as themselves, not the cryptic IM names they chose six years ago. And you can save your chats so you never have to lose something important just because someone told it to you over IM.
Like almost everything Google does, this sounds like a good idea to me. I'm already using Miranda for my IM and IRC needs, but this could be a nice addition!

Thinking outloud...

It would be neat to see a feature in Google Talk where you click on a contact and are able to share the files he or she has on their Gmail Account, the files they want to share of course.Given the 2+ Gigs gmail offers, this would probably bring the
entire internet to a crawl and piracy would run rampit, but hey it would be a nice feature, maybe a coding snack? ;D

I'm really excited about this feature -- when GTalk first released, for some reason I expected it to automatically do this -- at least it's here, now.  I, for one, have always been a big fan of archiving communication indefinitely, chats included -- but since switching to gTalk exclusively had basically not been archiving chats -- this is cool.

Just in case anyone needs a Gmail invite, I have 100 or so.  Drop a note here and I can send it to you.

Another Public Service.... ;)

Does anybody here actually have the gmail integrated chat yet? I've had chat history saving since yesterday, but am not one of the lucky few to see the chat.

I'm seeing it by some hours. Seems really great!

And you can also easyly forward the entire chat session to some other contacts (think about brainstorming with a friend, and then letting know of the news some other friends).

Bye!
