Software, like all things, comes with a half-life. I was about to say the same 'whatever happened' line about Copernic search when suddenly they come out with an update. Then I thought of Apple III and Zune. What other software/hardware either dropped off the planet or just stopped evolving?  gratuitous, off-topic graphic |

OK... Whatever DID happen to Copernic??
I was using it when V.2 was released, but after having it installed for awhile it would stop working and I never could figure out why. By "stop working" I mean that it would still index regularly and built up an immense index file, but at some point it would stop finding most files. After it not finding a few things it should have I would enter some really easy searches and it failed every time. Copernic doesn't really support the free version very enthusiastically, and would eventually say, "Try re-indexing", or "Try reinstalling". Re-indexing never fixed anything. Reinstalling would get it working again but after a time (several weeks or a couple of months - can't remember now exactly) it would get the same symptoms.
Is it possible that it has a maximum size and stops working if your index exceeds it? (Google Desktop Search does exactly that. Has a maximum size and when you hit it starts acting up terribly).

I have a bunch of software sitting around that has not been updated in a long time: Locate (OK, there are beta versions, but I'd like to have a new stable version to play with), Universal Extractor, WinDirStat... But the biggest letdown is Newzie, which has not see progress in months, and all the other projects around it are stalled as well. The program works really nice, but there are a few bugs that should be ironed out, and new features I'd like to be added. If it wasn't for its invaluable page monitoring function, I'd be using FeedDemon... BTW, nice graphic  |

Where did wTicker go? I still think it's the best RSS reader, but it needs help. Its author was very responsive until he took a vacation for a couple of months, with the web site promising a return date, but he never came back. Since then the web site has gone away, and any attempt to contact the author has been unsuccessful.

I just read something about it on Digg yesterday, new footage or something... didn't see it but my guess is, it's 5 minutes of some old dude screaming at the kids and waving his cane around, trying to keep them off his lawn.

Yeah, I saw footage of Duke Nukem Forever about 15 years ago. I'll believe it when I see it.  Not that I'm even interested in Duke Nukem anymore. It was cool when I was 12... But that sort of macho character isn't really that likeable anymore, in my opinion. |

VuePrint is still one of the best lightweight photo viewers ever designed. Newer ones like MaxView never included an index view — which IMO — is essential to its utility.

Zolt - it disabled writing to harddisk...for each and any user including the administrator. Only when Zolt was deactivated, writing was possible. The right to disable Zolt could be set on a per-user basis. Maybe an simple idea behind it, but I never felt safer on the internet than with that piece of software. |

A program that I find indispensable but that has not been updated in ages is Lotus Organizer 6. I use it every day and I have not found anything that can replace it for my purposes.

FindAndRunRobot used to be such a great application, however, its developer seems to have forgotten about it. Its been in perpetual beta status for over a year and a half. Kinda reminds me of mulberry, the email client :-/
