It will lear to "hear" your rolling-down-the-road voice bumps, creaks, krankles(yes, I know this isn't a real word, but you know the sound)  and bangs included

That's great to hear! Those long hours behind the wheel - especially way out west - are such a valuable time resource. And since the brain is fully engaged anyway it's so cool to be able to capture all those thoughts.

On the other hand, the noise level in your shiny new Volvo is, I'll bet, a far cry from my old '92 Freightshaker flattop with it's big yellow, thirsty CAT. It was much earlier days in terms of processing  power, too.

Keep on truckin'! This is a whole new way to ratchejaw

On the other hand, perhaps I have egg-on-face. BrotherS did, after all, ask for a web-based application. Ooops!   :-[

You probably already know that the Skype toolbars for Firefox and IE (as well as Word, etc.) will do that in Skype and that Outlook 2007 will dial your phone from your contacts list, too. So it certainly seems do-able.

I take the risk of quoting and thus repeating myself  :o.

Skype plug-ins will identify phone numbers in many applications (including web browsers) and dial the number in Skype. Outlook 2007 WILL dial your (wireline) phone with numbers contained in your Contacts list using your installed modem. You can hear the other party answer in the PC speaker and when you pick up the phone it takes over the line from the modem. Therefore, I refuse to believe that it's not possible or that someone just a little more clever than I couldn't get the job done.

I have spoken!   :two:

Have a look at "DU Meter" from Hagel Technologies -

I believe that it's as simple as setting up a home network for the two machines (work through the wizard) and set the printer properties to 'shared'.
Happy New Year!

I've found http://www.vtc.com/index.php to be very helpful and worthwhile for this sort of situation. You can sign up for the monthly unlimited access to all of their tutorials for $30 with no minimum required. I've used it one month at a time on a few occasions with an "I'm going to learn this application" as a 'project of the month'. Depending on what price you put on your own time, I think that it's pretty good value.

"Could" may be the operative word. Nice idea but it's inability to work across all applications reduces it to nearly useless. The developer readily admits that he's unsure what he's doing (on the Sprankle site). Perhaps some D/C'er could give him a hand and mature the utility?!

Wow! Thanks for all the leg work, Cuffy. I'll have a look and see if I can get my friend sorted out. I was hoping that some bright spark might have a simple/short solution for the problem but I guess I'll have to go digging.

Cool Yule and all to you, too!  8)

General Software Discussion / CD vs DVD for viewing photos on TV
« on: December 24, 2007, 01:52 PM »
I have recently been asked a question to which I don't know the answer. Can anyone help?  :tellme:

I have tried to put photos on a DVD and watch them on TV.  It doesn't
work!  I can do it with CDs okay.  I don't seem to be able to find
anybody to explain to me the difference.  Are DVDs only for
movies?  Is there a trick that I have not yet tripped over?

BigJim, if you combine all the information from Belarc Advisor, SIW, and PCWizard you could write your Master's Thesis for a degree in computer science. That is, if you understand ALL that information and can explain it to me so I can understand it.

I think that I understand most of what comes out of Belarc but not sure about some of the others. Everest is an high powered (and pricy) harvester which puts our reams of information much/most of which I don't begin to grasp.

One of the things for which I regularly use Belarc is when asked to help someone with their computer problems. It's a great way to find out where you stand right at the beginning of your troubleshooting efforts. Then you can get to work with your Revo Uninstaller, Registry cleaners, etc. I keep them all on a Thumb Drive for house calls.

No, you're an excellent cynic, paranoid. But what's the difference?

FWIW, I've been using Belarc Advisor for several years without the hint of a problem. Besides, it's a stand alone application. Relax and enjoy.

The Belarc Advisor does it all ... and much more ... and free!

What a fun mix of interesting people around this place!

(Jenny !  Red Diesel??? For shame on you circus peoples!)

94
BTW, what's the right terminology: rig, truck, 18-wheeler, etc.?
They all work. Try to avoid the likes of "killer trucks" and such, though.
As for the hundred yards ... you gotta start somewhere!   ;)

Not an offense - even in the slightest, Cuffy!

They're alive and very well up here. As is the Moosehead. We've resupplied so drag yourself back up here!

And, ah!, the hairy legs. Wonderful ... once past the stubble stage, at least. Like velvet don't you know. We still have lots of birds of many kinds so git yourself back up for a visit!!

is there any value to seeing the time countdown when something is beyond a couple of days?
I don't think so. :tellme:

One would probably just ignore it anyway. There may be more/better impact to NOT have it until just shortly before.

Yup! Seems so. But the calculation isn't right. I put this in at 1325 on 11Dec07 -

That's 1 mon and 18+ hours, right?

Are you getting sick of this, Ralf?

- Handles dates in the format ddMMMyy or ddMMMyyyy (e.g. 12Jan08) without corrupting the time component if present

:-[... unless you leave out the colon in the time in which case it does corrupt.

FYI, Cuffy: I've been in contact with the fellow at Moonsoftware and he says that he's about to make available a whole set of updates on his applications (and perhaps some new ones). He invited me to check back at his site in a week or so.

Come on along!   :)
