1  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.217.01 - Mar 20, 2015 on: March 23, 2015, 02:36:44 AM
We might want to split this post off and put it in it's own thread for others to find more easily.
Good idea. I'll try to expand this more to a template of sorts with more sample code and then give it a separate post.
2  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.217.01 - Mar 20, 2015 on: March 22, 2015, 06:12:17 PM
mouser: I worked around the issue anyway. It was a fscript plugin for browsing/filtering some set of files through a html thumbnail grid (a more generic spinoff of the Album Displayer plugin I did way back). Maybe I used an outdated fscript version, not sure.

I realized I could skip the fscript/plugin part and only use an alias with "dolaunch" and "showfilehtml" commands and variables. The rest can be done in the .html file with javascript and an imported index file made manually or through autohotkey or some such tool. A key step is that the showfilehtml command can pass parameters from FARR to the html javascript code when the html is loaded. Since the FARR .chm manual (I think) doesn't explicitly describe that possibility I'll post here a general sketch on how to do it for anyone else who might want to try something like that.

First create a FARR alias with these details:
name: test
regular expression pattern:
[copy or print]
^test (.+)$
Results:
[copy or print]
test | dolaunch showfilehtml C:\folder\test.html?$$1
The dolaunch command means that the html will be loaded immediately each time the FARR inputbox string is updated and matches the alias pattern.

Next create C:\folder\test.html with this content
[copy or print]
<SCRIPT>
var loc = String(window.location);
var pos = loc.indexOf("?")+1;
var searchstring = loc.substring(pos);
document.write(searchstring);
</SCRIPT>

Now type "test hello" in FARR. The FARR results window should as you type "test h" immediately show "h" and so on. You can react to that input in any number of ways with html, javascript and the special farr:// commands that let you run stuff on the PC command line from the html/javascript.

For example the javascript code
[copy or print]
location.href = "farr://C:/folder/";
would run (open) that folder. We can similarly run programs and pass command line parameters to them.

The html/javascript file can also import some pregenerated index you have made. For example of images that represent folders, books, music albums, games or whatever files/folders you want to index and display in a filterable thumbnail grid in FARR. For example create indexfile.txt in the same folder as test.html, add this to test.html
[copy or print]
<script type="text/JavaScript" src="indexfile.txt">
and fill indexfile.txt with a comma separated array of things to index. For example:
[copy or print]
rootfolder = "C:/folder/test/";
filearray = new Array("fileone.wav", "another file.wav", "third.wav");

Next code the test.html javascript to loop over the index and filter it based on the FARR search string and show thumbnails associated with matching index items. For the above simple array example we would also need to have positioned and named thumbnail files on the harddrive in a consistent relation to the items in the index. For example give each thumbnail the same non-extension name and folder as a file item in the index ( "fileone.jpg" and so on). Or if you index folders put an image named "thumb.jpg" in the root of each folder in the index. The javascript code can then for each item figure out its thumbnail file path and render the thumbnail image as a hyperlink that on click runs farr:// commands that runs/opens the file/folder .

Alternatively make a more complex index array that pairs each thing (file or folder) you may want to trigger from a thumbnail grid in FARR to the full path of its special thumbnail file.

The index would in all these cases need to be updated manually or through a separate script, unlike with regular FARR searches. But if the files/folders to be indexed don't change name/location very often a small indexing script that runs at boot or every nth hour may be good enough.

reliably?
No issue in the portable version. The problem is caused by an unreleased plugin I've made. When I remove that folder from C:\Program Files (x86)\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\ and restart the error goes away. I'll troubleshoot that plugin on my own a bit.
4  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Custom alias icon issue Win7 on: March 21, 2015, 05:22:38 AM
Yes, checked that. Icons display all right in Explorer. But no biggie. Unless anyone else runs into this too it is probably due to some quirk in my soon replaced system.

6  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Custom alias icon issue Win7 on: March 21, 2015, 03:33:47 AM
Same problem with latest beta. And with all cpanel icons. All I get is the same placeholder icon for .ico files from my imageviewer. I'll transition that computer to Win 10 before long though so the problem might go away by itself so to speak.

New FARR release, this is great!
8  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Custom alias icon issue Win7 on: March 20, 2015, 04:28:26 PM
You mean like this?
Formatted for Generic Code with the GeSHI Syntax Highlighter [copy or print]
  1. test | C:\test.txt /icon=C:\folder\test.ico
No same problem then.
9  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: request: allow FARR searches with options open on: March 20, 2015, 04:03:42 PM
Ok, makes sense in a way. And I discovered a workaround anyhow: we can edit myaliases.alias in notepad while FARR runs and then apply the saved changes by typing the "rplugins" command or restarting FARR. Of course I immediately made an alias for quick opening of myaliases in notepad.  cheesy

Sony seem to want to distinguish ebook readers and the ebook market strongly from the Digital Paper, pitched as a pdf reader tool for organizations. But the price is insane. I wonder what the material production cost is for the bare screen.
12  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: 2014-2015: Best tablet specs for ebook reading on: March 15, 2015, 03:50:04 PM
Nice find Nod5, that Sony Digital Paper looks very close to ideal for reading academic pdfs.. Too bad the price is so insane ($1000).
Yeah, I think they target corporate markets. I haven't seen the Sony Paper in real life but it looks to beat all other eink devices out there. But while probably great to simply read on one drawback that it shares with other einks on the market is that it AFAICT also has its own special format for highlights, annotation and so on. I suspect it'd be a hassle to move files back and forth to Windows and access and modify the highlights/annotations there. That is what I like with using a Windows machine for active reading: you can seamlessly copy and paste bits from the pdf viewer into a word processor or note tool, link the file to some reference manager, do advanced online lookups quickly while reading and archive and search the file with the best tools for the job. The bookshelf type catalog apps on the eink devices I've tried (Kindle, Nook) get messy fast when the number of files grow I think.

What I'd really like to see is a big, light eink screen like the Sony Paper (ideally even thinner) that only act like a stupid wireless (bluetooth) extra screen for a host Windows computer or when on the go an Android smartphone. It would send touch/pen inputs back to the host which then updates the image. All files are stored and processed on the host. These prototypes show something like that, though far from finished and with a few somewhat gimmicky features.

Surface Pro 3 is a good option. But if I was about to buy something new for ebook reading I'd wait for Surface Pro 4 which I'd bet will be released together with Windows 10.

Another cool device, though too expensive, is the Sony Digital Paper.

14  DonationCoder.com Software / Coding Snacks / Re: Disable left mouse click only on start menu in windows 8.1 if Microsoft app Read on: March 15, 2015, 02:03:02 AM
Hehe, enthusiasm is contagious mouser!  smiley

@ -Huub- this works when Reader app is fullscreen in Win 8.1
[copy or print]
#IfWinActive, Reader
Lbutton::
CoordMode, Mouse, Screen
MouseGetPos, mx, my
if (A_ScreenHeight - my > 101 or mx > 101 )
 click
return
#IfWinActive
A drawback is that it breaks click and drag in Reader (multi word text selection). But you can still do ctrl+click and drag to select text.

interesting.  and we were just talking about how to bridge the gap between physical books and ebooks.  this is one of those tools.
Thanks. That is the plan, to bring back navigation and rereading tools everyone takes for granted with physical books (highlights, dots/marks in the margin, earmarks for easy flipping between pages). If you can think of some other feature of that sort that is used for physical books then do tell and I'll see if I can emulate that in this app too. I plan to add an extra hotkey to set one single page as a special location and then a hotkey to jump between the present page and the special location and back. Kind of like holding a finger between some pages near the end of a book for easy flip to read an endnote and then flip back.

I have an issue with minicap on my laptop (high DPI screen but I've set it to 1920x1080).
When I start minicap with the -captureregselect parameter the screen is zoomed in a bit and the right/bottom side of the screen out of view. This means I can't screencap regions in the right/bottom part of the screen.

Once the minicap process ends the screen zooms back into the correct resolution again.

-captureredregselect works as expected and doesn't zoom in, but I prefer the more minimal -captureregselect
17  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Sorry, Ebooks. These 9 Studies Show Why Print Is Better on: March 14, 2015, 07:37:50 AM
I still much prefer reading academic articles on paper where it feels more real and i can mark things up.

I find the ebook experience for reference material - like programming manuals - completely awful. I find that I'm always wanting to flip back-and-forth between pages, and even have multiple books open simultaneously. [---] It seems like this is an experience that ebooks *could* emulate, but I haven't found anything that does so well.
These are exactly the kind of reasons that made me first write sumatra_earmarks (earmarks!) and later the much better sumatra_highlight_helper (3 color text highlighting! Color dots! Hotkeys to jump to prev/next/first/last highlight in pdf! Color filtered jumps! And with the jump feature the highlights can also function as earmarks!). Caveats: these only work for pdf and djvu documents and with the Sumatra PDF reader (developer version), which however is a great reader. Sumatra supports having multiple copies of the same pdf open in separate windows so it is easy to have two pages of the same book side by side if the screen is large enough.

Does the highlights get saved after closing the app?
I missed your post, sorry for the late reply. Yes, the highlights are saved into a .smx text file that Sumatra automatically loads again the next time the pdf is opened. Try it! If you run into any bugs post back here.
20  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: No more Filehippo for me on: March 07, 2015, 03:07:35 AM
Wow, that is a seriously misleading, malwaricious installer! Shame on Filehippo for hosting it.  thumb down  A few thoughts:

1 I've used filehippo before and have seen the increase in these bundleware installers. My attitude was to just stay alert and avoid their shenanigans. But I've grown more negative. I mean even if I escape their tricky behaviour others do get caught up with bundleware from those installers. Otherwise Filehippo wouldn't keep pushing that. Well I don't like a site that so shadily tricks users so I'll stop using Filehippo.

2 Another reason to not use Filehippo and sites with similar bundleware tactics is that they poison the well for all sites hosting software. Howtogeek recently ran a post headlined "Spread the Word: Ninite is the Only Safe Place to Get Windows Freeware". They nuance that a bit in the text, but still. The combined effect of Filehippo tricky installers and the howtogeek type of very general advice can harm places like DC. I can imagine an average internet user who through google finds a tool on DC but in the end stay away from it simply because they've been burned by Filehippo style installers before and are just not familiar with DC.

3 In the tracks of 2, maybe DC could inform newcomers more that installers here do not have tricky bundleware installers? The about page says nothing about that. The software page only shortly state "None of our software contains spyware or adware of any kind" in the left column. Here's an idea: we add a dedicated "DC pledge" page that very clearly states no spyware, no bundleware, no tricky installers, link to info on AHK false-positives and so on. The page should also highlight the long and good track record of DC as a safe source for software. Add to that a DC pledge icon we all use to link to that page from dcmembers pages and in forum posts for newly made software. The icon could go also on the DC main page and other big landing pages.
21  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Exclude Find and Run Hotkey from a Program? on: February 24, 2015, 01:52:42 PM
TyrionBean, in addition to what mouser and tomos said, if you use Autohotkey I think you can make a small hotkey script that triggers FARR with ctrl+space unless some programs A B C ... are active. First set the FARR hotkey to the Break button. Then use a script like this

[copy or print]
GroupAdd, nofarr, ahk_exe game.exe
GroupAdd, nofarr, ahk_exe anothergame.exe
return

#IfWinNotActive, ahk_group nofarr
^Space:: send {break}
#IfWinNotActive
Add one GroupAdd line for each process name that you want to take priority over FARR with regard to the control+space hotkey.

updated to version 150222

+ Four colors, color specific jumps, mouse controls
+ small GIF animations on download page show the features

Help me test it in Win8 and Win10 and post feedback here.

edit: small update to version 150224b
fix error in jump commands
jumps to/from nondigit pages now fully working (uses command line to jump)
23  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced on: February 13, 2015, 03:19:05 AM
I've tried the latest Win 10 preview a bit in Virtualbox. Like it! I can so far only see improvements compared to 8.1. Like before we can opt out of logging in with a Microsoft account at install. 10 feels like the heir to Win7 Microsoft should have made in the first place.
24  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / request: allow FARR searches with options open on: January 21, 2015, 07:24:53 AM
While the FARR options window is open FARR search is disabled. Is that necessary? Could it be worked around? When creating more advanced aliases it is handy to search for files with FARR. But to do so one has to exit/reopen the options inbetween.
25  DonationCoder.com Software / Find And Run Robot / Custom alias icon and file properties conflict on: January 21, 2015, 07:21:07 AM
Setting a custom icon in an alias breaks the right click file proporties action for me.

Create an alias under myaliases with this as result
[copy or print]
test | C:\test.txt /icon=test.ico
Copy test.ico to same folder as myaliases.alias

Next search FARR to display that result > right click > properties.
I get this error message:
[copy or print]
Windows cannot find 'C:\test.txt /icon=test.ico'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
Happens in both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
