1 Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: help searching word.rtf from farr? on: July 29, 2015, 05:37:52 PM
icemanmelb, the command line tool Silver Searcher (windows port of Ag) can search for strings inside a lot of files quickly.

You can make a FARR alias that searches with Silver Searcher and displays the result in FARR.
Make a new alias. Put this in the regex box
[copy or print]
ag (.*)
and put this in the results box (edit the paths to match the folders on your computer)
[copy or print]
ag.exe $$1 | showmemo . ;;; appcapappendmemo "C:\path\to\ag.exe" $$1 C:\path\to\dropboxfolder

This uses the memo view and clears the view for each new search.

I type "ev" then a phrase; I see the first few results from Everything, embedded in FARR. I then type space space and the phrase (but not "ev") is opened in the main Everything window.
Hi ayryq, I think the Everything plugin would need to be modified to handle that. Once the "ev" has triggered the plugin an alias cannot jump in and override that AFAIK. It looks like the coders of those plugins hasn't posted here since 2010/2009 so they may be abandoned but you can make a post in either of those threads or try to PM them, maybe they have email alert for new posts there activated.

Mouser: this question gave me an idea though: imagine there was a command similar to "dolaunch showfilehtml" but which instead parsed an input textfile file and made one FARR result list item for each line in the file. Then it might be possible to make an alias that first runs the Everything ev.exe command line tool with a search phrase from FARR, outputs the result to a list.txt file, and then finally does (the not yet existing command) "dolaunch showfilelist list.txt". But maybe the detour with a .txt file would make that too slow to be useful? Anyway, such a "showfilelist" command would make it easy to display custom lists of launchable paths from other tools in FARR.

Thanks. Boo for Ctrl+A not working in the rename box! When I get around to registrating the Win10 test build I'll try to submit an issue/request about renaming and include that too.

IanB: I put the newer version of ScanTailor_multi_core (with one more bug fixed) on the official page.

wraith808: I'm not surprised! It feels like Acrobat Adobe have a similar approach. I think they've intentionally made Acrobat hard to automate in order to sell their various more expensive corporate solutions.
6  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: OCR - comparisons of different software/capability on: May 30, 2015, 04:38:58 PM
IainB: ScanTailor and ScanTailor Enhanced produce the same output in many cases, Enhanced has some extra settings and a few tweaks useful for command line processing. ScanTailor is great and preprocessing with it helps a lot for OCR. Though development has been on halt for quite some time now. There is a new maintainer but no feature updates yet. The small helper tools I've made aim to automate or speed up some steps. If you only want black and white text output and already have well cropped inputs (or precrop them with BookCrop or SoloCrop ) then you don't need to open the ScanTailor GUI.

Edit: for ScanTailor_multi_core , see this later version which support more cores.

Can anyone who has installed the latest built (or any build after beginning of May really) say if this issue is still there: begin to rename a file (F2 in Explorer) and try to paste some text with a linebreak in the rename inputbox
[copy or print]
In the last build I tried Win10 accepted the input, but then on enter press displayed an error popup and reset the rename inputbox to the old name. (A better error handling would be to autoremove the linebreak or inform about it and leave the attempted string and let the user remove it and retry the rename without retyping the whole string.)

9 Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release 2.223.01 - April 28, 2015 on: April 29, 2015, 10:58:22 AM
is it all apps or just web browser apps?
All I think. Have tested Chrome, Firefox, Notepad and VLC.

update: using quote marks on the application path is the cause:

[copy or print]
1 works in win8 | C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
2 works in win8 | C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe ""
3 fails in win8 | "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
4 fails in win8 | "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" ""

Note: 3 worked in Win 7, so the behaviour is different in Win 7/8.

(Sidenote: while testing this I see that if an alias has multiple commands and the first is phrased in ways that will work (like 1 and 2 in win8) then all subsequent commands in the list for the same alias that are *not* correctly phrased will reuse the icon from the last correct command.)
10 Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release 2.223.01 - April 28, 2015 on: April 29, 2015, 06:05:59 AM
Also confirming that large icons now work in Win 8.1 with v 223.01 with and without font overrides.  Thmbsup
I still have the issue where aliases that run things with parameters doesn't work in Win8.1 (works in Win 7). Example:
[copy or print]
test | "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
I've tried it with different applications. If I plug the same application path and parameter into the win+R run box it works.
phitsc, IanB could you check if you also have that issue with aliases in Win 8?
11  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Multiple copies of the same file renamed on: April 28, 2015, 02:51:13 PM
In XYplorer you select the file(s) you want to Duplicate and press Ctrl+D. Key repetition works: keep the buttons down and copies are churned out like machine gun fire.
Nice, better than Explorer!
With machine gun sound effects? if not then why the heck not?! cheesy
12  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Multiple copies of the same file renamed on: April 26, 2015, 10:09:10 AM
ctrl+C and then ctrl+V n number of times?

In Windows 8:
test Copy.pdf
test Copy (2).pdf
test Copy (3).pdf

yes, all icons display correctly in small icon mode I think.
14 Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release 2.221.01 BETA - April 22, 2015 on: April 25, 2015, 05:09:52 PM
Sorry for late reply mouser, very short on time. Updated feedback on v2.221.01 (win8.1 pro device with high dpi screen): in large icon mode, no icons whatsoever are shown in the result list. In small icon mode icons are shown correctly.

I use font overrides: editbox height 30, result height 20, sideline height 11. But disabling font override doesn't solve the problem with missing icons in large icon view.

How can I force small icon view?
program options > settings > display options > lower right corner: results display style

IanB/phitsc: have you tried fiddling with the font (size) override settings as a way to make text less tiny when using a high dpi screen?

2.221.01 beta feedback:
Win 7 and Win 8.1: the issue with folders opening with navigation pane in Explorer is now gone  Thmbsup

Win 8.1 pro on laptop with high dpi screen:
- no icons
- aliases with browsers plus url parameter do not launch:
test | "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"
test | "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

Updated to v150421
now only operates on images dropped on the GUI (not all in folder)
now uses prefix "crop_" (not "solocrop_")
shows previous crop rectangle in blue
hotkeys to move previous rectangle and go to next/prev file
17 Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release 2.220.01 BETA - April 12, 2015 on: April 19, 2015, 12:56:07 PM
I've tried 2.220.01 beta. In Win 8.1 on a laptop with a high res screen no icons are shown in FARR. And the issue mentioned above persists: when FARR opens a folder (via alias or through regular search and match) in Explorer the left side tree view navigation pane is always shown, even if disabled and not visible when opening the same explorer folders from a link on the desktop. The navigation pane didn't show in FARR versions before the spring 2015 updates.
18 Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR as bookmark manager? on: April 17, 2015, 06:43:27 AM
I like many of your ideas IanB. Let me just add that separate .url files can probably be used as building blocks. Because as long as the file starts with two lines like these
[copy or print]
it seems possible to add whatever other lines we like below that, e.g.
[copy or print]
Comment=IanB has good ideas on bookmarking
and the .url file can still be doubleclicked and the url opens in the default browser. The modified file can be dragged and dropped on a browser to open the url too (tried Firefox and Chrome).

There are no such extra fields added by Tourl but it would be simple for anyone to modify the Tourl code to do that. Some other indexing tool could then be made to regularly update a database by parsing such .url files.

One thing I find handy with separate .url files is that if you have a project folder on the harddrive with some files (txt, pdf, doc and so on) you can also put some important links as .url in the same folder and get a visible overview of all components as you browse the folder.
19 Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR as bookmark manager? on: April 13, 2015, 01:56:40 PM
You could save bookmarks as .url files on your computer and put tags in the url file names.
FARR and FARR aliases can then be used to search among those bookmarks.
Long ago I made the tool Tourl to do just that.

Two caveats: 1. to be able to search not only the title of the bookmarked page but also its url you need to put (parts of) the url in the filename. Tourl has hotkeys for doing that. 2. Tourl is old, maybe some parts of the code need an update to run with the latest version of Autohotkey. But you can try it out and the source is included in the download.

Yes, Sumatra can handle all these file formats: PDF, ePub, MOBI, CHM, XPS, DjVu, CBZ, CBR
22  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: So, what pdf reader app is your fav? on: April 10, 2015, 03:00:23 AM
I use and swear by the Sumatra PDF viewer. Very fast. Minimal GUI.

Curt, can you list what editing features you need? Deleting a page in a pdf can be done over command line with the free tool pdftk so autohotkey could probably be used to make a hotkey for that action.

If you don't use the editing features all the time (apart from the delete last page action) then one alternative is to use Sumatra or some such fast, minimal tool for basic viewing and keep an editor installed for use only when you need to edit. This old thread has some scripts for quick toggling a file from viewer to editor.
23 Software / Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.218.01 - Mar 25, 2015 on: April 05, 2015, 01:25:17 PM
Another small issue with the latest version (in Win 7): if I search FARR for a folder and launch it the navigation pane (right side folder tree structure) is disabled, as I want it to be and as is default on my system. But if I launch a folder from an alias with
[copy or print]
dolaunch C:\test\

then explorer opens with the navigation pane enabled. If I disable it manually and rerun the alias the pane appears again. It didn't appear in earlier versions of FARR.
24 Software / DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: Sumatra Highlight Helper on: April 01, 2015, 11:48:58 AM
Hi IanB. Yes I can see the similarity to some ideas above and what OneNote does.

But OneNote, Calibre and Qigga are as you say whole systems for noting, collecting and searching information. The aim with my helper tools here is much more modest and narrow: to enhance standalone use of pdf (and djvu) documents in Sumatra on Windows devices. So not a replacement to those systems but rather something to use alongside them. One use case is to color highlight while reading a pdf, for quick later rereading of key sections and as starting points for later note taking in external apps.

One thing I'd really like to find a way to do is to later on extract all and only the highlighted text segments from a pdf, with a page tag for each segment. To plaintext or some other structured format that can then be imported to OneNote or some such system. I haven't found a way to do that export with highlighted text in Sumatra yet though.
25 Software / DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: Sumatra Highlight Helper on: March 31, 2015, 04:04:19 PM
Thanks for brainstorming!

the earmark ... let's say I'm reading, i hit a point where i want to now flip to somewhere else for a bit and come back.  so i press some button, and that point is now saved.  But not just bookmarked (I've tried this with acrobat, it sucks).  It needs to retain the whole view...exactly where i am scroll-wise, and the zoom position, etc.  exactly the way it looked when i left.  Once i save that spot, a bright circle with a number could appear on the border or something.  Now, I flip to somewhere else.  Maybe I want to save that spot too.  So i hit the button again, and another circular symbol appears next to the other one, maybe a different color and the next number.  SO now i have to colorful circles indicating my saved spot.  i click on either of these circles and that takes me back to their positions.  but it needs to be quick, easy, etc.  don't make me write a title for each thing, etc.  make it easy to make it or remove it.
Your idea with the circle/marker on the border sounds like a digital version of those small colored sticky bookmark tabs for physical books. Neither of my two Sumatra helper tools has an always visible list of jump locations like that. Saving the entire view (zoom level, scroll position, other settings) can be challenging I think. Isn't it often good enough to highlight/mark an exact location on a page? Highlight Helper can do that.

Both Sumatra Highlight Helper and Sumatra Earmarks enable speedy page jumps already (next/prev/first/last). With Sumatra Earmarks you can also right click the upper corner square and get a visual jumplist for all earmarked pages.

One use case that Highlight Helper doesn't handle good enough yet: when the user wants to both highlight text *and* jump to/from a few locations throughout the same session. One workaround is to use one highlight color only for the jumppoints and then use the color filter jump hotkeys. But I think some temporary jump location hotkeys would be better.

The other thing is the visual awareness of where i am in the book position.  When you read a book, there's this visual satisfaction as you go through it where the thickness of pages starts accumulating on the left.  ... we have page numbers like 121/315.  But it's not the same, it's not visual.  of course, there are those scrollbars that fill up as you read along, that's visual.  But somehow, it's not very satisfying.
I've also always liked that when reading physical books. Especially when plowing through a thicker book like a novel there is this satisfactory tactile feedback as the story is progressing. And it simply feels nice to riffle through the page edges with your thumb sometimes. I can't think of any good way to emulate that feel digitally today.

Some attempts to transfer a book like appearance instead feel cheesy and annoying, like all page flipping animations and page flipping sounds I've encountered. They feel even cheesier now when many other applications go for a flatter GUI design.

One possibility: pdf files can have a table of contents bookmarks structure that Sumatra displays in a sidebar to the left. The current section is highlighted there. That is already a form of visual position orientation. Maybe it would be possible to color text there or add some other visual markings.

as you flip around, it would also be nice if the program automaically remembered the places you are jumping from.  Like an automatic bookmarking history.  so if i flip around a few times, it has a convenient list somewhere where it shows where i left off.  But the key thing here is that it saves the entire view, not just a simple bookmark.  it really needs to look like exactly how it was when i left.
We could have a script save a "browser history" trail of displayed pages for each pdf document. In Sumatra there are already previous/next buttons (and hotkeys alt+left/right) for jumping in that trail.
