FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: KlipKeeper (A FARR2 Plugin by hamradio)
« on: September 07, 2009, 12:53 PM »
that is almost surely the problem -- there is a conflict between some versions of fscript and fsubscript and the more recent farr versions -- we need to get all the fsubscript and fscript dlls up to date.

Okay, I'm confused. What do I need to do? LOL I ask you, mouser, as you and I know each other a bit and you know my skill level. :)

Okay, I actually have a problem this time. When trying to access one of the clips from the FARR window I immediately get the following message:

Access violation at address 77124D0A in module 'OLEAUT32.dll' Read of address 00000001

What can I do to resolve this issue?

I'm having trouble getting this plugin to work. I type in "kk" and I only get the typical FARR results. Am I doing something wrong?

Hello:
I was looking for the Google Calculator plugin for FARR. I found this link: http://com/Google_Calculator.htmlczb.dcmembers. Unfortunately, when I try to download I get a 404. Is there a different location?

Find And Run Robot / FARR Hogging RAM?
« on: September 07, 2009, 08:48 AM »
Hello all:
I just noticed that FARR is running with more RAM than usual. It's showing that the virtual size is 103,000K and the working set is at 25,000K. I should mention that I only use that terminology (virtual size, working set) because that's what Process Explorer shows, so throwing more five dollar tech words won't mean much to me. LOL. I do, however, understand (for the most part) what those two numbers mean.

At any rate, is this normal or is something a bit wonky? As usual, any help or suggestions are very much appreciated!

General Software Discussion / App to minimize to tray.

I've been looking all over, but I can't find the little app that allows you to minimize any program to the system tray. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Oh, sorry. I should have been more thorough. I did extract it to that folder. So what can I do with it? Is there a site about it?

You need to extract it to a DataGenerator directory inside the plugins folder.

hamradio:
Oops. No I didn't, but I downloaded the zip file you gave and moved it into the plug-ins folder. Is that the correct way to install it? And also, what do/can I do with this plug-in. I have no idea why I have it. LOL.

character table and data generator are obsolete -- they were merged into czb's amazing czb pack:
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=17153.0

so delete those in your directory and install the czb pack version.

As far as the
"C:\Program Files\Find + Run Robot\AliasGroups\Installed\twitter"

there HAS to be 2 copies in your FARR directory somewhere -- search for all .dcupdate files under C:\Program Files\Find + Run Robot\ and youll see them.
delete the older one which inside the .dcupdate will say twitter alias v 2.0
that will leave you with the good one.

Okay, I corrected the CZB, per your instructions, but I would like to know the possibilities/functions of that plug-in. Anyone post that info?

As far as the duplicate Twitter issue, I followed your instructions and found the older copy. All is well at that end.

Once again, thank you so much! And any info regarding the CZB features are much appreciated!
Cheers!

Find And Run Robot / Re: DC Updater FARR & Twitter Plug-In Issue
« on: July 09, 2009, 08:43 PM »
Okay, I found the duplicate folder in C:\Program Files\Find + Run Robot\AliasGroups\Installed\twitter. But upon updating I get the same result. How can I totally remove the Twitter plug-in so that it doesn't show in the DC Updater (it still shows two)? Maybe then I can reinstall the plug-in fresh.

Also, if you look at the screenshot I posted, the "Character_Table (FARR2 Plugin)" and "Data Generator (FARR2 Plugin)" both say "get version failed". What's up with that? How can I correct it? I really don't want to have to do a clean re-install of FARR, but if I have to then I'll need some instruction on how to backup all of my preferences, etc.

Thanks, mouser! You are the FARR God!... which is obvious since it's your creation.. :)

Find And Run Robot / DC Updater FARR & Twitter Plug-In Issue
« on: July 09, 2009, 05:08 PM »
Hello all:
I'm having an issue with the DC Updater. It scans and says FARR needs updating, as well as my Twitter plug-in, and a couple of other things (all shown in the attached screenshot). It seems that FARR updates just fine, but then FARR pops up with the word "aplugins" in the FARR search field. I hit escape to close it, then DC Updater shows that the Twitter plug-ins still need updating. No setup file or anything to that effect shows up. Also, I question whether or not FARR actually updates, since DC Updater has been showing up frequently over the past couple/few weeks.

I'm hoping that I've explained the issue correctly. A screenshot of the issue is attached.

Thanks guys! As usual, you rock!

General Software Discussion / Text-To-Speech Freeware?

Does anyone know of a good text-to-speech freeware app? I sometimes find myself having a hard time concentrating when reading news articles online, and thought that maybe such a program would help...

As usual, any input is very much appreciated!

Okay, I didn't think it was a big deal, but wanted to make sure. I use the System Restore feature constantly, creating a restore point prior to any significant changes.

Thanks a million!

Living Room / Re: DVD/Extracted DVD File(s) Heat Issue (?) Ack!
« on: June 03, 2009, 10:42 PM »
Hello all:
Thank you all so much for your input. I'll take a gander inside the case and see what's up, and check on the capacitors. About a year ago a friend of mine (who does most of the physical work on my PCs) installed a 'bitchin' fan into my desktop. Temperature has never been an issue until this month. I'll also ask him to look at things as well.

As far as a new video card is concerned, I did have an ATI Radeon card in, but my friend insisted that the GeForce 5200 was better for my needs. I use my desktop for video of all sorts, and some graphic-intensive gaming (The Sims). Looks like I'll have to totally re-evaluate the current configuration.

I asked my friend if he over-clocked the desktop; he said no. So that can be ruled out.

If I can get these things done in a timely fashion I will report back here to this thread with the results. Unfortunately I can't afford a new video card, but I'm sure I can work something out. I always manage to...

Thanks again, folks! You guys rock, as usual!

General Software Discussion / Odd Install Message
« on: June 02, 2009, 11:52 PM »
Hello all:
I've got another one for ya guys:

I ran across this freeware program FreeMeter. I don't really remember where I found it, but I guess that's trivial. What my question is, is that upon going through the installation I get a strange message that needs attention prior to running the install. I have attached the window in question, so you can see it for yourself. I just want to know if this something that I should steer clear of, or if it's a 'no big deal' sort of thing.

As usual, any help/input/suggestions are very much appreciated!

BTW, I've mentioned here that due to my financial issues from being on disability has thwarted my desire to throw some cash donations your way. Good news has come around: due to the market my new lease has lowered my rent by $60 starting in July! In my world, and in Tulsa in general, this is a very good thing. That leaves me with some money to spend on non-essentials each month. I plan to donate to DC when the rent lowers! You guys have gone above and beyond the 'call of duty', and have been more than accommodating. I very much want to give something back. Anyway, that was totally off-topic, but I wanted to throw that out there.

Living Room / DVD/Extracted DVD File(s) Heat Issue (?) Ack!
« on: June 02, 2009, 11:41 PM »
Hello all:
I know this is sort of off-topic, but I post this here because I trust each and every one of you and I know you'd never steer me wrong. So here goes:

I just recently have been dealing with playing DVDs on my desktop. Not just physical DVDs, but extracted ISOs and such as well. It seems that the ambient temperature of the room is making the video freeze up, forcing me to kill the process then try again later. I live in a third-floor apartment (getting all the heat from tenants below me), with all of my windows facing west, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. So I'm sure you can imagine that it gets a tad warm. I have a thermometer in my bedroom (where the PC is). If the temperature rises above 79 degrees Fahrenheit, the video freezes. Initially this was just when I played physical DVDs, so I tried extracting one to hard drive and play it from there. Same issue crops up.

So I dug around my program files (I don't have all my program files listed in my Start Menu), and found SpeedFan 4.34. It reports the hard drive as around 145 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

So my questions is this: is it really the temperature that's causing this (not just coincidence)? And is it the video card that's doing the freezing? My video card is NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 running on Windows XP SP3, Intel Pentium D CPU 2.66GHz 3.0GHz 1GB RAM. I've tried various programs to play the DVDs/Extracted files, including WinDVD 8 Platinum, VLC Player, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center.

As always, any help/input/suggestions are very much appreciated. Let me know if you need more info...

General Software Discussion / Ruler & Co-ordinates App?
« on: May 12, 2009, 07:16 PM »
Hello all:
I'm looking for a freeware app that can serve two purposes. That, or two freeware apps for each purpose. I'm needing a monitor ruler, obviously to measure in pixels. Also I'm needing a ruler that can show me monitor co-ordinates to place windows. Anyone here know of such a thing?

Living Room / Quick Launch Live/Active Shortcut
« on: May 07, 2009, 12:22 PM »
So I've decided to "tweak" and/or update my Quick Launch toolbar, which I keep just to the right of the Start button. I've noticed that I've been navigating to my "My Documents" folder on the desktop unit over the LAN (I think it's LAN, I'm not so good with networking). Now I have set the shortcut to appear when clicking on the "double arrows" icon to expand the list. Immediately it is an "active" link (I'm sure there's a word for that, but I can barely type today. LOL.)

Okay: Actual question: Does having that link "active" hinder performance overall? Is it just in a state of cat-like readiness or does it hibernate like an external hard drive? Am I making sense? Please let me know.

:)

I swear, I'm not trying to wreak havoc. LOL.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / YouTube search alias?
« on: May 01, 2009, 08:16 PM »
Is there an alias or plug-in or whatnot that would allow me to type "youtube ___" and have the query results open in the browser. Just like handy-dandy imdb plug-in...

I use JKDefrag in this manner:

1.  I first delete all the temp files I can by using the last page of the GUI and optimize the registry as well.  CCleaner style.
2.  I also turn on "show hidden folders/system folders" in Tools/Folder Options and delete all the folders that are in BLUE and start with $NT (Service pack uninstall), as well as empty the recycle bin again.  I've never had to uninstall an sp or hotfix.
3.  I then set XP for "No page file" and reboot.
4.  Then I run JKDefrag GUI and move everything to the END of the disk.
5.  I then reset the Page file to whatever I feel is optimal based on the computer, typically the standard 1.5x Ram, accounting for any shared video cards, and reboot again.  This places the page file as close to the outside edge of the disk it is able to find in a contiguous space.  I have used 2x Ram sometimes when the computer has more HDD space than ram.
6.  I then re-run JKDefrag GUI in "last access" mode making sure I specify any additional space hogs such as the c:\windows\installer\* directory.
7.  From that point forward you can leave JKDefrag Screen Saver in whatever mode you like best and set it to wait an Hour before it kicks in, and then only defrag if the last defrag was more than 24hours ago.

Wow. That's quite a protocol you've whipped up!
