Image Manager Shootout / The new addendum to the ACDSee Review..
« on: July 27, 2005, 02:50 AM »
Readers of the original review might want to check out the new addendum:
https://www.donation...icsViewer/index.html

NOTE: After many aborted attempts to discuss the possibility of a discount with ACDSee, we have come to the conclusion that their customer service and public relations department is disfunctional. Our emails to ACDSee were repeatedly ignored, even despite the best attempts by one responsible person in their beta testing department to get someone to handle the issue.

This has caused us to have serious reservations about recommending that you purchase any software from ACDSee.

We dislike having to say bad things about companies, especially those whose products are as impressive as ACDSee. But having a good product is not enough - you must also demonstrate some competence at handling customer service issues. While we will not withdraw our award for best Graphic Management Tool, at this point we think your money would be better spent on a company that has a little higher regard for customer interaction.

It's a difficult decision to write something like that and I think it probably could use some explanation and discussion.  I look forward to your comments/suggestions about whether this is an appropriate comment for us to make.

But let me explain a little bit more about what motivated it, with some excerpts from mail i eventually sent to ACDSee:

We pride ourselves in building good relationships with companies; the
whole point of our site is to identify both the best programs and the
best companies, and help serious software users identify the best
programs in each class.  Our interaction with the public relations
department of ACDSee was a real disappointment.

...

Whenever we do a giant review and identify the best program in a
class, we contact the company regarding the possibility of a discount
for our members, or the possibility of donating a few copies of the
program for us to give away as prizes.  Many (most) companies seem to
react very positively to the idea.  A few companies decline.  Let me
make clear that we take no offense at all when a company decides that
that isn't something they want to do - it has no bearing on our
review.

We're a fairly small site and we put a high value on personal
interaction with companies.  Occasionally we end up in a situation
where we end up spending considerable time trying back and forth with
a company just trying to get in touch with (or get emails returned
from) someone in the company who can make a decision on the issue -
and this is what tends to be most frustrating, just because it takes
so much of our time and energy, and because it leaves us feeling like
we are dealing with a chaotic organization.  Of course we understand
that sometimes things fall through the cracks and may not be
representative of larger issues but if that's the sum total of our
experience, we feel like it's something we need to convey to our readers.

I'd love to hear from our members about their opinions on such things.  And by all means if you have positive or negative experience in dealing with ACDSee that would be welcome.

Unfinished Requests / Re: idea: time between two time & dates
« on: July 27, 2005, 02:45 AM »
i'm sure you will be able to find an existing time/date calculator to do what you want BUT
this is still the perfect candidate for a coding snack - it's just exactly what a coding snack is all about,
so i say someone should still write this, with the intent of customizing it a bit and trying to think of how to make it slightly unique.

i'm not a fan of tucows; used to be a good place, now not so much.

snapfiles.com and webattack.com are my current favorites for finding software.  webattack is particularly good with freeware.

we recently put a mirc script pack up in the download section (https://www.donation...r/mircpak/index.html)
the other author of those scripts (koncool) might be able to whip this up - i'll send him a link to this topic.

36383
version 1.02.04 is now available.  for more information see the Clipboard Help+Spell forum section:
https://www.donation...index.php?board=49.0

36384
https://www.donation.../MemberDownloads.php

v.1.02.04 - 7/25/05
 · Fixed error that required exit+restart when program was started with windows
 · Improved the help file.

v.1.02.03 - 7/22/05
 · Options moved to separate dialog

36385
this is an interesting idea..

are you thinking of a specific irc client like mirc?
im not sure if an auto pop up would be the best thing but i can certainly see the use of a script where you could highlight or type a word and then get a pop up menu of items you could select to paste in.

i love when you guys make mock-screenshots - it really is helpful.

to answer your question:
1) no it's not hard - this is a PERFECT coding snack project for a new programmer; i'll bet someone does it in the next week.
2) however, such programs already exist (some freeware some shareware) that do this and a bunch of other time+date calculations.
maybe search snapfiles for "date calculator" or something like that.

i'd be interested to hear the best freeware tool for such things..

General Software Discussion / konfabulator now free
« on: July 26, 2005, 05:54 PM »
konfabulator lets you add little fun attractive objects to your desktop (clocks, weather tools, games, etc.)

http://www.konfabulator.com/

"Let's just get this out of the way... Konfabulator is now free. Yup. If you download version 2.1 you know what you'll never ever see? That's right a registration reminder. Fear not, there's nothing sneaky in there, no spyware, no ads, nothing that's keeping track of information and sending it to us... it's pure, uncut Konfabulator goodness. "

Yahoo bought it out and made it free.

jeff, thanks for reminding us to thank RIT Labs!
They generously donated these copies to us to award.

The same goes for vmware, techsmitch, blueberry bb flashback, and other companies who have donated free copies of their software for us to give out.  A big thank you to these companies.

36391
this is kind of old news but we never announced it.

free copies of TheBat were given out to jeffk for his contributions to the forum and his expertise with mail programs.
donationcoder.com columnist tenseiken also was given a free copy that was originally awarded to Jibz for his thebat plugin.
(ps there is still one more copy of thebat waiting for the a programmer who makes a plugin for thebat).

Living Room / A free software prize goes to.. kfitting
« on: July 26, 2005, 04:55 PM »
We still haven't figured out the best way to give out donated software prizes.. whether it should be mostly random, or based on other things, etc.

In this case we'd like to show some appreciation for all the help kfitting has given in testing programs and reporting issues, and just in general being so active on the forum helping figure stuff out.

In time, we hope to acknowledge everyone who has made this forum such a nice community to be a part of.

kfitting, please let us know whether you would like Techsmith Camtasia 3 or BB Flashback Pro, or whether you would like to wait until another program of interest to you gets donated.  We may still have a copy of VmWare as well floating around if thats something you would really prefer instead.  If you'd like to donate (not sell) your prize to someone else that's fine too.

Congratulations and thanks again for being part of the site.

36393
i'm going to use a more traditional start-with-windows approach in the next version.
can you remind me again the issue you have and any clues you think might be related to why it's happening.
it shouldnt be an issue of reinstalling.. except if you installed it under two different user accounts, or perhaps if you installed it under one account and ran it under another.  in all such cases, manually deleting any F&R entry from start menu -> startup group should solve it.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Clipboard Help + Spell problem
« on: July 26, 2005, 03:06 PM »
hi carol - i'm going to try to fix this this weekend - seems a bug on system restart that a lot of people are experiencing.
hopefully i'll have it all fixed and a new version ready in the next couple of days.

clipboard help+spell is one of our newest programs and it still has some refinements and new features that need to be added in the very near future.
i hope you can help us improve the program by posting any further suggestions you might have.

there's a forum section for the program here:
https://www.donation...index.php?board=49.0

i'll move this thread over to that section in a little bit since that's probably the best place for it.

36395
my thoughts exactly.

36396
yes, filetargets is nice freeware, though not updated and doesn't work in my file manager; but adding context menus for move to specifc folder and copy to specific folder is on the agenda for the "DonationCoder ContextMenu Tool"

36397
You can now create a donation/PayPal link in your forum profile, which if found will show a green $ by your name in posts.

The idea is that authors on the site will have such links, as may other freeware authors, or people who prodivde support and help, in case others get the urge to make a donation to them while reading the forum.

It doesn't have to be a paypal link, any link will do.  This is just another in a series of steps we are taking to try to make it easier for us to reward each other for our individual contributions.

ps. don't miss our new Scientific Guide to Figuring Out How Much to Donate, from the Official Announcements section (ps its a joke) :)

36398
btw for this tool, pls put in some options that enables us to show/hide which commands we want on the context-menu...

yes, in fact that is the main thing of this tool, it will be a super-easy, super customizable context menu helper.
it will come with a bunch of our own unique tools, but easily let you configure your own, and customize it EXACTLY as you want it, with complete freedom.

36399
We've revamped the donation pages to make them a little more concise and navigable.

We can also now receive payments through several trusted industry shareware payment services (though they take a significantly bigger cut from user donations), which are ideal for non-US donators.

We also finally have the results of our 10 year commissioned study aimed at discovering the optimal suggested donation amount to the site.  You can find the results of the study here:

is there a downside to using a batch to pause and unpause the system scheduler? what does that not do that you want?
