Clipboard Help+Spell / DBISAM Engine Error# 11010
« on: September 11, 2007, 09:55 AM »
Heyyyy Mouser.  All of a sudden CH+S has decided to be a pain in my butt!  Hah.  It looked like the database was damaged, so I tried restoring all the backups but that failed giving me messages similar to the ones I am posting screen shots to below.  Then I tried going into the database folder in the program folder and deleting the database files, figuring it would recreate blank ones when I ran it and I could restore my latest backup.  This didn't work, it doesnt create them and I still get these messages:

I have used VMWare pretty extensively since they made it free, and also Microsoft VirtualPC.  This is a class of software that the average computer user doesn't really need often, but maybe they should.  I like the Browser Appliances that people make up for VMWare for browsing questionable sites.  It really does protect the host PC unlike anything else. There are many other uses, I use VMs for testing software I don't really trust.

VirtualBox, I almost passed over today thinking "Eh, I have VMWare".  I am glad I didn't.  First, its very light weight compared to the others.  Second, it has some features the others don't.  Nice ones too!  Like the arbitrary sizing of the window and guest display settings.  Really detailed USB support is another.  Also, folder sharing with the host without setting up networking.

I am very impressed with this application.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to mention one of the best features.  The ability to do multiple snapshots of the guest and restore any of them independent of the others.  THIS feature I intend to test this weekend.  If it works as advertised, that would be great.

On some sites, advertisements aren't the pop-over/under kind but simply make the page layout distracting and stressful; other sites have porn ads, which I'd rather not have show up.

Heck, thats the only kind I DON'T mind! :)

In all seriousness, I don't mind google ad words at all, and never even try to block them.  Because they don't get in my way, they don't overwhelm the content I am trying get to.  I despise ALL forms of Flash ads.  They are of the devil and as such should be sought out and destroyed, along with their evil creators.

104
Well, on the same note, they are well within their rights to block you from accessing the site if you choose to block the ads. Its a two way street. I am a firm believer that if you utilize something enough, and its provided for free or offers an option for some form of reimbursement, you should reimburse the author (be it donations, subscriptions, etc). If an ad makes your favorite site free, why shouldnt you support them and let it be shown?

Absolutely, we are in complete agreement there.  If they choose to block my access on the basis that I am using an ad blocker, they are completely within their right to do so.  I will then decide whether the site is worth me viewing the ads and either disable my ad blocker or not go back.  BUT, for them to just assume that by my coming there I am agreeing to view the ads is ridiculous in the extreme.  I agree to nothing that I don't actively accept.  There can be no assumed anything.

Thanks for 1.15.01!

Did you decide not to (or forget to) PECompact the main .exe this time? My new .exe is 9MB :-

ClipboardHelpAndSpell.exe
Size: 9442816
Version: 1.12.0.1
CRC-32: B36D063D

Which is up from 1.8MB for the last version. And it still shows the previous version number (1.12.0.1) too, though all the new printing functionality is present and correct.

I suppose file size doesn't matter as much these days, but I'm still of the small-is-beautiful mindset, wherever possible. I UPX'd mine down to about 2.5MB, but if you did forget then maybe you'd like to update the package (and/or just make the PECompact'd .exe available)?

-DonationCoderTransmit (September 05, 2007, 10:28 AM)

In my mind compacting the executable is a useless action these days, unless you are trying to fit a bunch of stuff on a small usb thumb drive or something.  200gb hard drives are ridiculously cheap these days, and a PE compacted executable still has to be decompressed in memory anyway, which is the only place it would matter now (other than the previous example).

By visiting their site, you agree to their advertisements. Most sites offer a subscription for ad free viewing, if you truly like the site, you will let the ads show. I do it on sites I support. If DC had a way to force ads to show for charter members, I would enable it. This is why I like ad muncher, I can support sites I like and find useful. Its only right that a site I use all the time get some sort of recoupement for my constant usage.

I never agreed to any such thing.  Show me where I accepted one.  Oh, its an implied agreement?  By the same token, by me visiting their site they accepted an implied agreement to not annoy the heck out of me, which they broke with their intrusive flashing ads.

107
They can moan all they want, but if they had kept the online advertising to a SANE level, there may have never been a reason for an adblock.  However, they had to go and make huge flashing banners, annoying whackamole ads.  Put ads in to the point that they overwelm the content many times over.  So, you do what you do, and I do what I do to put a certain amount of sanity back into my browsing.  Frankly, it doesn't really matter to me, I am not the advertisers target audience.  I am less likely to buy your crap the more you put it in my face anyway.

a free speech violation is when the government tells someone what they can allow/disallow on a forum, not what the owner determines his forum is for.

I felt I should repeat the point Cpilot already made, because it bears repeating and MANY people seem to be confused about constitutes free speech and what is a "human right" and what is not.  In a private forum paid for by a private individual or company, you have no rights to free speech or even access to it.  They can ban you just because they don't like you.  And, this is as it should be.  If they are too heavy handed, they will piss people off and suffer the consequences.  The people, the consumer, will punish them as necessary.

Now what does constitute free speech issues, is the government telling you what you can and can not say. Mostly.  There are also situations where they can censor you too.  For instance, the FCC telling broadcast networks they can't allow broadcasts with f-bombs.   I don't know all the various rules, but if you think about it, it is the government telling private individuals what they can and not say.  It is much more difficult for the government to censor you than private individuals, thanks to the constitution.  Man, I bet people in the government really hate that document. :)

Hey Mouser!  I disabled a few programs in DCU that I never would use (flipbook printer, international image maker, etc) and while I have no need of this feature, just thought i should mention it:  Would it make sense to add a tab that shows disabled programs?  That way you can see what you have disabled in case you change your mind about one.  It would work the same as the available to be installed tab, sort of keeping them separated logically.  I dunno, maybe it doesn't make sense.

The reason I actually started this post was to ask, is there still any chance of categorization going in?  I can see a large number of items being configured in this program and one huge long list would be very unwieldy.  My idea is a tree view when user insertable folders, then they can drag the items to the folder and drop it to put it in there.  Plus, plugins would automatically be a subtree of the program they plug into.  Like all the FARR plugins.  By default items would just insert at the bottom of the list, under user specified categories.

Mouser, we all know you were just working cheering Ken up.

As for you Ken, I won't pray for you either.  Since I am a devout follower of the Norse god of mischief, Loki, if I did, there is no telling what could happen to you.

I will just say:  Hoping for the best on your surgery tomorrow!  Back pain is a... pain in the butt?  Anyway, good luck! :)

I use Acronis Disk Director.  Works great, lets you split and merge partitions and everything.

112
I use Subsonic to manage my media with tried and true Winamp to play the stream.  This way I can stream my MP3 collection to work.  Great program,  you can set it up to transcode in realtime down to a lower bitrate for playback if you keep your collection at a very high bitrate and your internet connection couldn't handle it.  I keep my collection at 192 since I can't hear the difference between that and the higher ones.  By the way, I LOVE Subsonic.

113
Heeeyyy mouser.  Was thinking about DCU today and had an idea, figured I would bounce it off you.  You know how you have pre-release versions available to members of the site but not to the regular visitor?  How you also have alphas (as with FARR v2) that we have to check a forum to have available?  How about if we can put in our forum username and password in DCU and it will know about versions available to us that isn't available to the general public?  You can have a beta-tester list of people you want to get very early versions of a program and DCU will notify us about it and give us the opportunity to download it and try it out.  It should also have a way to revert it, maybe it will "archive" our existing version  on the system so it can revert it that way.

Just a dumb but cool idea I had.

Hey mouser, looking sharp! Couple of issues to report, and a possible bug.

Issue#1 - Using Vista, the prefs dialog is too big for the frame so it puts in scroll bars.  Image attached.
Spoiler
Screenshot - 7_31_2007 , 10_03_38 AM.png

Issue#2 - I prefer to have the app running all the time, the big exit button actually exits!  I would like it to take it back to the tray if the close to tray option is checked.

Issue#3 - When advance controls is selected, the little yellow "log" window at the bottom does not remember its position.  I prefer it slid all the way down and I pull it up if I want to see it.  When exiting the app it comes back up in the same position no matter what I had it set to before exiting.

Issue#4 - Possible bug.  Not sure if this is by design.  Only the "Description" column separator is draggable, the others can not be selected.  Also, this column does not remember its size.  Minor issue, but important to me! :)

I do like the new look though, it looks VERY slick compared to what it looked like before (which wasn't bad!).  The tabs are cool!  Are there any plans for a tree view for apps with plugins so they can be a part of the app or something?  Would be nice if an app's plugins can show up "under" the app so you know they belong to it.

If I find any other issues I will report them.

Edit:  "a app's plugins"??  Was left over from when I changed references from program to app while editing, it was "a program's".  Why am I explaining my edit?  I don't know.  Just didn't want people to think I had no sense of grammar.  And I was embarrassed by it.  Also as inexplicable, why am I calling everyone's attention to it?

Developer's Corner / Re: Does my web page suck?
« on: July 27, 2007, 07:59 AM »
This post begs the question:  Does DC pass the test? :)

116
It sounds like you have really thought this thing out!  The hardest part will be supporting non-dcupdate programs, but your scheme sounds like it would work.  I think for situations where you are checking PAD files for version info, it might be a good idea to make it so it will only check those once per day at the most frequent.  You really don't need to check more frequently than that anyway.  There are a number of very important programs for me that I would like to use DCUpdater to keep an eye on for me.  I could approach the authors about including DCUpdate support since it would ridiculously easy to do, but would like an alternate way to do it if they wont or cant for some reason.

117
Heeeey Mouser.  Just something I was wondering, and you may have addressed in the PAD file discussion.  But, I will ask it anyway as I like being redundant.  Will we be able to add an entry to point to a 3rd party program's PAD file entry, hopefully put in an update frequency individually (maybe have a "default" frequency that is used if not specified otherwise) and have it check for programs with no .dcupdate file?  Or we can use one of the existing .dcupdate files and make our own for a program we use frequently that isn't from DC.

Find And Run Robot / Re: new launcher just released
« on: July 19, 2007, 01:35 PM »

FARR's what first introduced me to DC and one of the most used apps on my PC.  Went to use my wife's computer the other day and spent several minutes sure her computer was broken--alt+space did nothing, the catalyst which every application on a computer system relies upon was not present, nothing worked!  She did have something on there called a "start menu", but I am not one for fumbling with ancient technology that may or may not be booby trapped.

Haha, thats funny.  And often the funniest things are true.  I also spend an uncomfortable amount of time (whole seconds!) on a clients computer wondering why "pause/break" doesn't work, only to realize that they of course dont have FARR installed.

119
for example the remote update file on the server might simply point dcupdater to a torrent or file checksum which dcupdater could then launch in an external tool.  so dcupdate would detect a new version, alert user, and then initiate a download of the new version via an established torrent tool.

Hey, I like your idea better.  Why reinvent the wheel if it isn't necessary.  The only problem being, it is nice to be able to execute the updates via dcupdater. I'm lazy that way.  I guess we all have to make sacrifices.

120
The bandwidth of downloads via DCUpdate may not add up to much and im not sure how you are sitting on the bandwidth front.  Would it be feasible to add swarming capability to DCUpdate and some of us can enable "seeding" mode so we can help out in serving your updates?  I think the bittorrent protocol is pretty well documented.  I know I would be willing to seed updates.  In this case, the program would automatically download and save the updates and immediately seed even if I haven't installed it.  Possibly add the option to automatically silent install updates and run the new version.

I am just babbling here.

121
Should Updater hold off on updating itself until its tasks are finished?
this came up today in another thread (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=9206.0)
and the answer is yes, it's on my todo list, definitely is needed

Actually, I think it should go the other way.  If DCUpdater sees that there are several updates, including itself, I think it should hold all other updates until IT is updated.  That just seems more logical to me.

Cool, it works! Which one do you use for the hide/show button?
You're looking for the ]spoiler[...]/spoiler[ tag (reverse the parenthesis)

Thanks jgpaiva

I wasn't born with 2 kidneys like everyone else. I was born with 3...and I am not a twin. It is quite rare. Usually things like this only happen on rare occasion to identical twins, where one is born with 1 kidney and the other born with 3. It is even more rare to happen where there is no twin involved.

Oh my god!  Yuck, mutant!  Quick everyone, grab the torches!

I keeeeed.

yes it was intentional.  the reason is quite crazy.

when testing on vista, the updater was freaking out and causing all kinds of UAC alerts.

it turns out (as Taichimaster discovered) that the reason for this was that vista tries to be clever about handling setup/install programs specially with their new account elevation stuff, and when vista was seeing the word update in the program name, this was triggered.  so i had to rename to uppdater to avoid this :)

Well, I think we should come up with a completely new name then.  I wouldn't want people to see that and think you are a horrible speller. And, you know they will.

Edit:  I saw someone refer to it as "DCU" in another thread, how about retaining the name DCUpdater and just change the exe to dcu.exe?

125
Hey mouser, do you want bug reports here or somewhere else?

Just in case it is here:  In the latest version, running windows vista, close to tray doesn't work.  I have checked and the option is selected, but when I hit the X it exits completely.
