let us know how you got on

dont know did you see second link in my post above -
there may be something of help in comments there

eg:
123. Vorapoap - January 15, 2006

I used the Security Task Manager to quarantine many services especially many of Intel PROSet/Wireless services. I found that I can disable following services and still get the wireless to work using Windows Wireless Zero Configure (not the strange Intel App)

    mEoU.msi
    mCore
    igfxTray Module

I also disabled all RealTek Audio utility services..

well.. I can now begin to hibernate for at least 3 times now continuously..

If this can really solve the problem, I suggest everyone who already apply the hotfix and didn’t get the problem solved to start looking at your services and disable all unnecessary memory hungers.

I will continue to report if this is one of the solution..

10427
with 2GB of ram & for some reason the pagefile wasnt being accessed (I believe that was the problem)
I couldnt go into hibernation with FF + 40tabs open.
dunno did it say "not enough resources" or "not enough virtual resources to .... your API"
apologies about the vagueness of text :-[

but it's sorted now...

a bit off topic but that wasnt sorted (just pretended to be for a while...)
error was (when going into hibernation):
"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API"
is related to xp sp2 struggling with too much memory (odd reaction though!)

solution is ms hotfix, see page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095
or
if that doesnt work the more recent comments here may help:
http://www.ntwizards...2004/10/13/hibernate

funny I knew I had quoted
"Insufficient resources to complete the windows API" *
but couldnt find it when I searched - maybe because it was in a table?

Anyways hopefully that'll sort out your problem! or at least the hibernation one..

* EDIT: re search - I searched for all words & it is slightly different wording

Living Room / Re: The ugly truth about beauty
« on: October 23, 2007, 02:10 AM »
Most men, I believe, think of themselves as average-looking. Men will think this even if their faces cause heart failure in cattle at a range of 300 yards. Being average does not bother them; average is fine for men. This is why men never ask anybody how they look. Their primary form of beauty care is to shave themselves, which is essentially the same form of beauty care that they give to their lawns. If, at the end of his four-minute daily beauty regimen, a man has managed to wipe most of the shaving cream out of his hair and is not bleeding too badly, he feels that he has done all he can, so he stops thinking about his appearance and devotes his mind to more critical issues, such as the Super Bowl.
;D ;D

Hey, just because WE'RE idiots, that does not mean YOU have to be...
;D ;D ;D

loved it Josh

I see you have a 20% discount from Raxco for Perfect Disk on the winners page - tempting :)

Living Room / Re: Multibooting and Partitioning Experiments
« on: October 22, 2007, 08:23 AM »
Interesting read Wolf

I've never indulged :) in multibooting,
but when setting up partitions & windows xp install lately
someone suggested making a hidden partition that I could possibly use later for multibooting (so I did)

also, these were recommended:
http://www.goodells..../multiboot/index.htm
http://www.goodells..../multiboot/notes.htm

and here is one partitioning guide I came across
http://partition.rad...m/partitioning_4.htm

I see you do have XP on a logical drive ?!?
Is it the boot.ini file going into the initial primary partitions that makes that okay?

Also curious about Ranish Partition Manager - it hasnt been updated in years,
is it good?
Do you have Powerquest Partition Magic because Ranish has limitations?

I see there's a few links about multibooting, etc at the ranish page:
http://www.ranish.com/part/
Multi-boot:    Archer's HD Page, Multi-boot by Mariusz Zynel, Trombettworks Multi-boot HowTo
Hard disks:    Boot Sequence, How-It-Works, Terms, Hidden Secrets, Recovering Secret HD Space!
Other apps:   Bootpart, Diskman, GAG, OS Loader, SavePart, SBM, Volkov, Zeleps Partition Resizer

havent looked at your links nontroppo but noticed this yesterday:

If you have a look here
http://www.neoseeker..._reply&t=1021332

they have the option to select text from someone elses post & "Append quote" or "Prepend[?!] quote"

hi again Wolf
was thinking about it again -

it might be interesting to start a new thread sometime (naturally if you were interested)
about multibooting and
about partioning "tactics" I guess one could call it, and possibilities -
I know a couple of people here do/use(?) multibooting, but far as I know it has only been mentioned in passing.

10433
anyone tried the mcafee "version" ?

the end is here...of active virus shield at any rate
see
https://www.donation...54.msg81911#msg81911

10435
We hope you have been satisfied with the free protection provided by Active Virus Shield. Although your software may still be up-to-date,* this service is in the process of being discontinued.

*Only users with a current license to the software are still receiving updates. Check your Active Virus Shield software to determine whether it is active. If your software is no longer active, you must upgrade now for up-to-date protection.
It's official,
they dont say how long it'll take - not sure what they mean by footnote  :-\

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« on: October 20, 2007, 09:37 AM »
In DOpus:

It's definitely not hardlinks - cause the folder doesnt actually exist anywhere -
you cant create subfolders -
e.g.
say you have a virtual folder "ABC", containing folders 1, 2, & 3:
you cant make a new folder in ABC & drag 1 2 & 3 into it. Cant make the subfolder atall.

It's more comparable to a tagging system really  :)

Also you cant add files to the root collection(virtual) folder

it's just a virtual containing folder

I feel the need to correct you a bit, as you are not correct in all of what you are saying. You can create as many subfolders as you'd like in a virtual folder, and move them around as you see fit. The only thing that could prevent you from handling them pretty much like folders on a real filesystem is if you create them as "members" instead of "sub-collections"

ah,
Dirhael, is that an Opus 9 thing? -
I've never gotten asked that in Version 8 at any rate. :-\

When I rethink it - I'm not definite about whether they are hard-links or not
I was thinking about junction points  :-[ still think they not hard links

Breakfast sounds good urlwolf..

Wolf -v.quick response

thanks for all that info -
I dont think this off topic  :)
"new organization ideas for fresh windows installation"
sounds about right :)
I'll have to reread your post again later though..

re paging file(S)
https://www.donation...36.msg81703#msg81703
was the most recent...

Correct me if I'm wrong but, your definition of a virtual folder sounds like a folder filled with hard-links?

Must be. I wonder how it can work otherwise... unless it's using the NTFS Alternate data Streams + a database, or something similar, like the tag2find software.

In DOpus:

It's definitely not hardlinks - cause the folder doesnt actually exist anywhere -

General Software Discussion / Re: keeping/saving cloned files
« on: October 20, 2007, 04:37 AM »
after the unpredictability of hard-links I gave up - have new computer now but havent tried hard links yet.
Could give it a go again...

I have tried Junction Points though:
From thread
soft and hard links in ntfs :
Re problems deleting folders in Junction Points:
From http://en.wikipedia..../NTFS_junction_point

Observed effects
Windows Explorer:

...
# Whilst walking through the directory with explorer, it seems impossible to delete folders, however files can be deleted.
# A solution for these issues is installing NTFS Link, which makes Windows Explorer handle junctions correctly. One can also use the fsutil application to delete and query reparse points (administration privileges are required).

will try this nfts link & see how I get on
tried a few different apps - no success deleting folders so think I'll probably give up on that idea too :(

forgot to mention that i found it amusing to see a 'human league' http://en.wikipedia....iki/The_Human_League photograph being used as a bit of stock photography on the deathswitch site.

that's very odd, isnt it!?!

Living Room / Re: Help with translating a video from Deutsch
« on: October 19, 2007, 04:54 PM »
My translator means that's the same like the german: "Er hat ein Auge auf sie geworfen"

literally means "he threw an eye on her"
[I suppose to say "I gave her the eye" could be construed fairly gruesomely as well :)]

"to gallivant"
dunno is that one used so much any more!
when we were growing up it used to be used like:
"what are you doing gallivanting all over town"
I never knew it actually meant like flirting - just thought of it like galloping or something!

from www.dictionary.com
1.   to wander about, seeking pleasure or diversion; gad.
2.   to go about with members of the opposite sex.
.
.
> you'd know I'm not single since I started learning german
to speak german help you here, yes?  :-* :P
eh,
that's the reason I'm learning german atall

Well done Stephan  :)

haven't learnt that one: to "give the eye" -
you'd know I'm not single since I started learning german

And the poor woman with the glasses - she really got freaked I think
That they told her she could be seen when she had the glasses off  ;D
Cruel but brilliant ...

would make a great logo like that with a black background

Thanks. The black background is the picture of the pumpkin outside in the night with a lit candle in it.

hah!
I thought it was the bit you cut out :D

just tried it - fine here..

I was suprised it makes such large paging files
but if it's doing the same on your system I wont worry bout it!

hi Jenny!
grew up in Clare.
wasnt in a story telling tradition though unfortunately -
I mean not in my family circle - nothing to do with the electricity  :)

One thing that made a beeg difference for me: allowing Windows to create multiple page files on separate harddrives.  It's tempting to pick your fastest drive and use that (disabling all others) but after I let Windows handle it I ended up with four pagefiles and less thrashing.

I've just tried that
....
Was very surprised to see it has created a 1.99GB paging file on each of those extra partitions
What's going on there I wonder

Ralph
would you be able to say how the pagefiles on your system are? (sizewise I mean :P*)
thanks, tom

* EDIT: well, anywise really

The picture is of what my wife just created from a pumpkin.

btw thats really impressive -
do they keep long - or get all distorted as they dry up (which would be interesting too!)

Does anyone have Hallow-e'en favourite images/stories to share here?

Does Cody eat pumpkin seeds?
-cranioscopical (October 19, 2007, 09:18 AM)
kindof..
mean I dont know about Cody - we'll have to wait for the experts to comment on that ;)

it is celebrated in Ireland - not sure, but think it's a very old pre-christian festival *
[I think it probably was in UK too but got "transferred" to Guy Falkes" day & most of the traditions got lost ?]

we used to light bonfires on the local green area -
not very environmentally friendly ones with tyres etc. but hey it was the 70's

we didnt do the door to door thing
but played great games at home -

  • try get coins from the bottom of a basin filled with water with your hands behind your back was my favourite :)

  • then apples would get tied hanging to a crossline:
    - blindfolded & again with hands behind your back you'd try get a bite from the apple.. great debates about whether using your shoulders allowed or not

* Wikipedia says:
Halloween originated from the Pagan festival Samhain, celebrated among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain.
Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century.
Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century.
Halloween is now celebrated in several parts of the western world, most commonly in Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom.
I guess they mean Scotland when they say UK there at the end (?)
