Looking closer at PopUp Wisdom, I'm embarrassed to see it has at least some of the editing functionality I was requesting lately** -- so thumbsup to you mouser  and a fat :-[ for me

** ability to edit current file via the popup quote (just click on [menu] etc.)

But, I have run into a problem with the install version - the books cannot be modified/saved, presumably because they are in the Program Files (x86) folder (and I dont have permission I guess).
Note: this really just a heads-up. I'll move to portable version (but can test any new version).

Details
the quote files are stored in (I think this is default):
C:\Program Files (x86)\PopUpWisdom\Books\
=>
when I try to edit one, I get the following message:
---------------------------
Notepad2
---------------------------
Error saving "C:\Program Files (x86)\PopUpWisdom\Books\obliques.txt"!
Probably the file is locked by another application.
---------------------------
OK

General Software Discussion / Fixing File Associations (PDF)
« on: December 04, 2015, 04:54 AM »
Windows 7 x64

I'm having persistent trouble with PDF file associations: *sometimes* PDF's open in Windows Media Player. Usually it's when another programme tries to open a PDF, currently Softmaker is the culprit, but I've had the same problem with other software, so I know this is not a Softmaker issue.
I have found no helpful tips online (some others have the problem, but get the usual - set default file associations e.g. via file context menu, which makes no difference).

So I'm asking here :-)

Starter Question is:
where in the REgistry do I set file associations *and* how exactly do I do it ?
=>
IIUC default file associations are here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\

Here's a screenshot:

Screenshot - 2015-12-04 , 11_14_35.png

The persistent handler is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\PersistentHandler
=> (Default) - REG_SZ - {F6594A6D-D57F-4EFD-B2C3-DCD9779E382E}

The shell ex is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\ShellEx\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}
=> => (Default) - REG_SZ - {DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}
This bit may be irrelevant:
When I search for this {DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193} (from shell ex key) I get lots of hits about why preview doesnt work in Outlook. I dont know if this is relevant as I dont use or have Outlook.

N.A.N.Y. 2016 / NANY2016 idea - [non-runner] Caret Control
« on: October 09, 2015, 01:35 PM »
[EDIT// see reply #4 below -- I changed title to "non-runner", and the more accurate "Caret Control" ]

If this idea takes off, it'll require a thread of it's own, so I'll start it already ;-)

Idea is to control the cursor via the keyboard, no matter where it is --
the cursor can normally be controlled via keyboard in most apps, but I would like to be able to standardise behaviour across all software.

Here's an example of non-standard and variable behaviour:

Ctrl+RightArrow will bring the cursor to end of the next word, but if the next word is the last in the sentence, and is followed by multiple carriage-returns (blank lines), the cursor will go to the very end of the blank lines in some software (e.g. Thunderbird);
in intelligent software/fields, it will simply go to the end of the sentence -- which is also the end of the word. Then behaviour varies -- sometimes it will go to each following line, sometimes it will treat all blank lines as one block and go directly to the end of these.

Other factors are stopping the cursor within a 'solid' block of text at certain symbols e.g. various brackets or symbols.
asrgags]dsht\sghdh)srthr'rsdhdj
and should it stop either side of that symbol ? or just on one side of it (similarly with blank spaces and words) ?

Different people would want different behaviour which might require options :-/
So, I think the big questions here are:

  • first, is it even possible ?
  • if so, is it worth it?
I dont know how much work it would involve -- trying to define all behaviours in all circumstances could be too much work for the return (:p) ?

Living Room / "Great Service" Awards for Software
« on: September 30, 2015, 09:57 AM »
Thought I'd start an appreciation thread for software with great service.
In case it isn't obvious, mouser and Skwire, and the many others here on dc share first prize

The first three here based on email communication:

CintaNotes (Notes: extremely helpful developer, very fast response times)
Linkman (Bookmarks: very fast and helpful responses to queries / bug reports)
Syncovery (Backup/Sync: very fast and helpful responses to queries / bug reports)

Special mention to:
InfoQube (Info Manager: very helpful forum and developer)
Softmaker (Office Suite: very helpful forum)

[hope I didnt miss any thread with same topic, did do a search FWIW]

I was trying to upgrade a piece of software this evening.
The payment processor required my:
  • Name
  • Full Address
  • email
  • Phone nr.

For phone number, I gave them a number with my country code and the correct number of zeros after.
It looks like they check the number -- for too many zeros at least ;-)
They refused to process the payment without my phone number.
I canceled the order thinking I could use paypal or some other method -- but it all goes through the same payment processor.

Am I just being stubborn - or is this the norm these days? (or both?)
I dont believe it's the norm here in Germany - and it's a while since I updated anything via one of the bigger payment processors, so I cant even remember if I used give my number before...

(Feel free to make suggestions for poll imporvements.)

Living Room / [SOLVED] Boot problem/s
« on: July 23, 2015, 02:58 PM »
see reply #18 for the solution. As I'm not sure exactly what went wrong, I cant be 100% sure what fixed it.
All I can say is be afraid of DELL's boot and partition management - be very afraid...

Dell Latitude E5550 Laptop:

Summary, so far...
# Windows 7 machine will boot to Windows Sartup Repair, but not further. See update below for details from Startup Repair diagnosis.
# System restore to before problem started did not help.

Update:
(taken from Reply #6)

Hiren's Linux worked:
# I got the user files off of it
# I deleted Hiberfile.sys

The machine does still boot to Windows Startup Repair, but still not any further.
I now see Startup Repair says:
-------------------------
Root cause found:
-------------------------
Boot configuration is corrupt
Result, Failed. Error Code = 0x3
-----------------------------

According to MS, the 0x3 code is:
-------------------------------------
ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND
3 (0x3)
The system cannot find the path specified.
-----------------------------------

There are three partitions:
# Dell Recovery
# OS
# Boot

I have one image of whole drive courtesy Aomei Backerupper -
will try restore the boot one, but too late now for me (1am here) - will have a go tomorrow.

[What broke it is another story :-/ possibly caused by trying to create an image via DOS (using Eassos Partition Guru). Something about the DELL setup and that did not work on  reboot. Or could possibly be hardware related, but I suspect not]

Original Post, some relevant details maybe...
[1] Most immediate problem:
Blue screen: I am unable to reboot; battery is not removable - this will solve itself eventually when the battery runs down - but is there any other way of forcing it?
(I've put the screen on maximum brightness to speed up that process.)

[edit]
I did try:
# pressed power button - no response; tried it for a few seconds, nothing
# tried Ctrl+Alt+Del a few times - nothing
# the machine does not seem to have any reset button
[/edit]

[2] Immediate background:
I was trying to start the machine with Hirens boot USB stick, selected the mini XP option.
Got error:
0x000000A5 (0x00000003, 0x8BE651D4, 0xC0140008, 0x494E495F)
According to MS the solution is to delete Hyberfile.sys
If the problem persists, start the computer by using the Windows CD or by using an emergency startup disk, and then delete the Hiberfil.sys file.
https://support.micr....com/en-us/kb/831691

So, if/when I can reboot, I plan to try with Hirens Linux option and delete that file (and if I'm lucky 'normal' windows will start again - but that's for another post).

Any suggestions welcome - will let you know how I get on anyways ;-)

EDIT// corrected th error code

Living Room / Olympus Air (Hackable) Lens Camera
« on: July 14, 2015, 05:07 AM »
I hadn't come across lens cameras before - apparently Sony came out with the idea first, but now Olympus has taken the idea a good few steps further with the Olympus Air (available sometime in July in the States).

ZPR-olympus-air-a01-coupler.jpg

For the average user: it can be used with your smartphone - either attached, or remotely (in the review the connection still worked @ over 250 feet).
But Olympus have also made an SDK available - although not yet available via an English language page - see here. Also physical design files, so if you feel like tinkering...

Z-olympus-air-a01-phonemount2-600.jpg

what makes the Olympus AIR extremely versatile and "hacker friendly" is the fact that it has an open architecture, with Olympus providing an SDK (Software Developer's Kit), documentation and even physical design files for users to easily customize and control the camera for their own applications, as well as to spur innovation. Never before has a camera manufacturer so completely and officially opened a product to end-users, software developers, experimenters and system integrators.

To get you up and running with the AIR A01 quickly (and for those not developing their own software), Olympus also unveiled no fewer than eight smartphone apps for Android and iOS, including OA.Central which is the base app providing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity as well as basic shooting and playback, plus the framework for installing additional apps; OA.ModeDial which provides a control interface to access PASM shooting modes and adjust exposure parameters such as shutter speed, aperture, sensitivity, white balance, etc., just like on an advanced camera; and OA.ArtFilter which implements many of the company's famous photo filters and effects. Other available apps include OA.Clips, OA.ColorCreator, OA.Genius, OA.PhotoStory, and OA.Viewer, with more likely to come.

Eassos Partition Guru page:

Seems to have an impressive range of capabilities - also does imaging of partitions (below from a 2013 review).
Also seems to be updated regularly.

Data Recovery
When the operating system deletes a file, it just marks the file “deleted” and make the disk space taken by the deleted file as “free”. Data isn’t gone and still stays on the disk. It is possible to rescue these lost files before they are overwritten.

PartitionGuru can recover deleted files that are emptied from recycle bin deleted by “shift + delete” as well as recover formatted files; besides it can recover lost or formatted partitions and repair partition table.

Backup & restore
A better way to avoid data loss is to backup data. Users should develop such a habit of backing up important data timely. PartitionGuru provides powerful partition backup function which is similar to Ghost’s backup and restore function. PartitionGuru is much more powerful, for it supports incremental backup which increases practicability and convenience. It can back up partition to image file from which the partition can be restored.

Disk & partition management
PartitionGuru makes disk and partition management an easy job. It can create partition, delete partition, format partition, resize and split partition without data loss, assign drive letters, etc. With all these functions, even non-professional users can manage disk and partition excellently. As to functions like convert partition type, convert partition table and manage dynamic disk cater to computer professionals.

Other functions

-operate virtual disk and recover data from it, various virtual disks are supported;
- make bootable USB disk, which is very useful especially when the system can’t boot normally or the operating system crashes;
- construct virtual RAID and recover data from it;
- delete data permanently, so that data can never be recovered by any means;
-detect and repair bad sectors.

Living Room / Partitioning or Not w. single HDD?
« on: July 06, 2015, 09:39 AM »
Wondering about pros and cons of partitioning a single HDD  [*not* SSD] machine (laptop as it happens, Win.7 x64).

1) If you partition, you can back up data and system/OS much more efficiently.
1a) But maybe there's a way to create an image of your system excluding the data/images/etc.? (I will have to check this one out myself too - I installed Aomei Backupper Free on the machine.)

2) I believe that if you dont partition (OS / Data) the harddrive will be read much more efficiently and less stressfully?

Are there any other factors? - or thoughts :)

Site/Forum Features / Hardware mini-Reviews Section?
« on: June 28, 2015, 07:44 AM »
Short version:
How about a Hardware mini-reviews section in the forum?

Threads could e.g. be as simple as a recommendation plus (hopefully) the willingness to answer a question or two about it.

Longer Version:
An example:
my (couple years old) Lenovo N581 15.6" laptop has: a wonderful keyboard, a crappy screen, a terrible trackpad, and a sharp edge where the ball of your hand might rest.
Hence I'm looking for a new laptop for work, so I've been looking at lots of reviews - and, at times, trying to get feedback to questions. That's one of dc's strengths - you've a much better chance of getting feedback here. So I thought this would be a good idea.

Of course, instead of a new section, the current mini-reviews section's scope could simply be expanded to include hardware (?)

Living Room / Laptop tray - for your lap [Recommendations?]
« on: June 27, 2015, 08:16 AM »
I tore ligaments in my foot so I have to keep my leg up :(

So,
I'm looking for a tray or holder for a laptop - but one that I can rest on my lap.
I have one I use in winter - is one of those trays with a cushion underneath - but it's much too warm for that now.

Requirements would be:
          # keeps laptop cool [doesnt need a fan though]
          # keeps me cool ;-)
          # unsure about the angle - probably ideally one that will keep the laptop level. Note: my legs are also 'level', so this may be a difficult requirement...

I'm looking at this one from Ikea (image below) - for me the angle is all wrong though. It may work if I reverse it - have the low end towards my knees - but I suspect that's too much the other extreme.

31UuFYdPn0L.jpg

This one form Coolermaster looks okay - but unfortunately not available here [EU] (or is available at outrageous prices).

I couldnt find much else, so wondering if anyone can make a recommendation?

Found Deals and Discounts / Web Architect Pro on BDJ for 30$
« on: June 25, 2015, 07:59 AM »
in spite of my slightly negative comments**, I'm considering buying the Pro version of Web Architect on BDJ today for 30$US - http://www.bitsdujou...aign=2015-06-25+PC+A

FWIW it's normally 99$. The regular edition is normally 50$
Compare editions here.

It's very mouse orientated, and steals a lot of vertical space with a ribbon. If you can handle all that, it's the best I've come across at helping you do stuff (wizards for e.g. adding image; easy to find special characters; validation; preview; etc.). So, it's also very suitable for someone who is learning - or doesnt do this kind of stuff often (I qualify on both counts there - but that makes the Pro 'extras' kind of moot for me...).

**
[edit] I'm unsure if there is a free version as mentioned below [/edit]
Web Architect:
50 euro/ free version (some limitations I think) [?]

It is very beginner friendly:
  • everything is easily accessible via ribbon UI

I didnt find it very user friendly:
  • it is mouse intensive, and keyboard unfriendly (no shortcuts for very basic things)
  • no customisable shortcuts that I could find, at any rate

This is a first look at Tabs Outliner Addon/Extension for Chrome.
I moved recently from Firefox to Chrome and was looking for a replacement for Session Manager addon. Tabs Outliner [TO] is very different, and a lot more powerful, but it also covers Session saving in it's own way, and could be used as a bookmarks manager.
To cut to the chase: I love it so far, it's helped my browsing to become a lot more organised without too much effort

OVERVIEW
Tabs Outliner will open a second window showing it's outline of webpages. Sticking with the outline approach, I call this a 'pane'.

Screenshot - 2015-06-17 , 15_14_16.png

If you open say three Chrome windows, they will show as an outline in Tabs Outliner: within that pane, you can drag pages from one window to another; close tabs so they will be remembered; close/delete tabs completely.

FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT: it is important to understand that (initially at any rate) what is closed outside of Tabs Outliner is lost/gone/forgotten - and what is closed from within Tabs Outliner is saved.

Windows can be renamed within the outline (from the default "Window").
Once they are renamed, they will be saved - so closing them via Chrome itself is okay. The caveat above still remains for tabs though: any tabs closed from within the browser window will be deleted from Tabs Outliner.

When you reopen Chrome, and open TO:
  • double-click a tab or window will open same
  • Ctrl+single-click will open a copy of the tab in the last active Chrome window
To rearrange the outline:
  • Drag n drop to move tabs or hierarchies
  • Alt+DragnDrop to copy hierarchies

TOOLBAR:
the toolbar is more like a box and is always on top (even though it disappears) in the bottom right of the pane. This can lead to confusion if you are dragging an entry down to a window that is actually behind the toolbox - but the full line is active so you can drag to bottom right.
I havent used the tools that much:
  • (new) Window
  • Group
  • Separator
  • (create) Note
  • Google Docs
  • Clone View (I *think* it just clones selected window)
  • Undo scroll (stop it jumping to e.g. newly created window)
  • Scroll up to next open window
  • Close/Save all open windows
  • Expand all (/Collapse all) - e.g. for searching, also for saving all as export/backup

NOTES (within outline):
Notes can be added to the outline, and used hierarchically. The notes in this image start with a '#'

Screenshot - 2015-06-17 , 12_53_27.png

click once on the notes button - a note will appear down at the very bottom of the outline list. I nearly always want it in the active window - to do this click on the note icon in toolbar, and drag it to desired location.

NOTES DIRECTLY FROM WEBTEXT: highlighting text on a webpage, and dragging it to the outline will create a note with the text.

GROUPs:
a group can be created 'within' a window in the outline.
When you open that window - the groups within it will not open. They have to be double clicked in turn to open them, and they will open in a separate window.
Drag Group button from toolbar to location you want to create a group.
Youtube video: How Groups Work

OPTIONs:
I went with recommended settings in options (probably worth reading through it to see possibilities.

PORTABILITY:
works with Chrome portable and SRWare Iron portable.

SYNCING:
I think this not supported yet - but I dont use (login-)syncing in Chrome so dont know if that works.

BACUP:
backup is important (after my first couple of days with Iron portable I upgraded Iron and lost all extensions, so I was straight in the deep end).
According to the author simply saving the contents of the pane (as a html file) will work as a backup. But I dont know how to restore that. There is a much more detailed description from the author of how to restore via profile (my emphasis):
Spoiler
I decide to provide some other algorithm to surely load TO database from other PC.

0) check the chrome://version/ page to find a path to your current Chrome profile (Profile Path field)

then intall the TO (if it's not installed already) and then completely shut down Chrome (on a Windows PC without this
you will not be able to delete some files that you will need to delete on next steps)

then:

1) Delete all next files and folders from the current Chrome profile

"\Local Storage\chrome-extension_eggkanocgddhmamlbiijnphhppkpkmkl_0.localstorage"

"\Local Storage\chrome-extension_eggkanocgddhmamlbiijnphhppkpkmkl_0.localstorage-journal"

"\databases\chrome-extension_eggkanocgddhmamlbiijnphhppkpkmkl_0"

"\IndexedDB\chrome-extension_eggkanocgddhmamlbiijnphhppkpkmkl_0.indexeddb.leveldb"

"\File System"

Please backup the \File System folder before delete, as it might contain data from other Chrome applications, and also it's contain the readable backups of the Tabs Outliner tree - so if you do so on a system that previously have the TO it's a must to backup this folder.

2) Restore your TO database in the
"\IndexedDB\chrome-extension_eggkanocgddhmamlbiijnphhppkpkmkl_0.indexeddb.leveldb"
folder
The content of this folder must not contain any other subfolders.

3) Start Chrome, start TO - it must read the database.

If this not hapen, because the database is corrupted for example, then there is a way to restore tree by backups from \File System folder on source PC.

Prompted by the breach at Lastpass (LastPass hacked), I'm looking for a safe alternative to the free version of Lastpass.
(I'm thinking mainly for desktop & Windows.)

One alternative is to go premium with Lastpass ($12 per annum) and get a Yubikey
Lastpass's summary of how Yubikey works
Enabling the YubiKey with LastPass

Once you have your YubiKey, enabling it with LastPass only takes a few steps:
Login to LastPass and open the LastPass Icon > My LastPass Vault > Settings > Multifactor Options tab.
Select the YubiKey option.
Insert the YubiKey device into a USB port on your computer.
Focus your cursor on the “YubiKey #1” field.
Press the button on the YubiKey device.
A long string of dots should appear in the YubiKey #1 field.
Change the “YubiKey Authentication” status to “Enabled”, and press the Update button.
Enter your LastPass master password and press Confirm.
YubiKey is now enabled for your LastPass account.

One problem is that they offer four different Yubikey versions - and the comparison page is all double-ductch to me:
https://www.yubico.c...ts/yubikey-hardware/

So, interested in thoughts on Lastpass *and* also other options that might be safer to use than the free Lastpass.

General Software Discussion / Managing Flash in your browser
« on: June 15, 2015, 12:55 PM »
Managing Flash in your browser:

I gave up using Firefox [FF] & Pale Moon [PM] due to their very high CPU and/or memory usage when playing flash video (which problem was possibly with all video in-browser). What did work with FF/PM was setting the plugin to ask for permission, and of course, the FlashBlock extension.

Now I'm trying out Chrome and (SRWare) Iron.
Chrome plays video no matter what the plugin settings are (e.g. ask for permission makes no difference).
Iron, when set to ask for permission, simply wont work -- either right-click on video to allow plugin doesnt show correct context menu, or I end up with a page saying Ah snap! something went wrong ... Reload - reloading just starts the cycle again.

I'm wondering:

  • is there any browser out there that manages Flash gracefully?
  • And also, I suppose recommendations for managing it in Chrome/Iron (I know there are extensions, but still thought it worth starting the thread...).

there is an interactive version here: http://www.fallen.io/ww2/
where you can on occasion pause and mouse over graphs for more info

« on: May 29, 2015, 05:35 AM »
Just a heads up that Softmaker Office 2016 has been released.
http://www.softmaker...english/index_en.htm

I havent upgraded myself yet, so not sure what changes.
Also, pricing appears to be different for German locations, so not sure what pricing you will see - probably 89.95 $/€ full price; 59.95 upgrade price (?)

Note:
  • 1) there appears to be only the Pro version now
  • 2) there's one upgrade price for all (even from free versions)
  • 3) they have moved from eMclient to Thunderbird for email

Overview:

Looks good to me, I will be upgrading at some stage in the near future.

Disclaimer: I haven't used this.

The focus is Amazon S3, but it seems to work with a bunch of online backup sites.

$10
Seems like a very good price (if online backup is your focus) - monitors files & backs up online.

I've used their Explorer with which you can look at your S3 backups. Has a nice interface, and is easy to use.
They also have software that allows treating S3 as a local drive.

~20 hours to go.
