I've started using the very helpful "Overide filename" in the post-capture dialogue.

I fill in my filename, if I then press enter -
the SC window opens with the image.

No biggee, but I'm wondering is there a way to get it to save the image but *not* open the SC window (when I press the Enter key)?

DcUpdater / DCupdater no longer checking for updates (I think)
« on: July 09, 2013, 02:00 PM »
I've never paid much attention to dcupdater but have always been happy when it offered me updates
- so I havent changed any of it's settings. I havent seen it in a while but didnt actually realise that till today:

I saw today's update to SC in the forum, so I right-clicked it's tray icon to check for updates. Then I checked the other dc apps - and see there was a CHS update - v2.18.01 - May 18, 2013 which I missed out on.

Is there anything I can check with dcupdater?
Here's my settings:

Living Room / Time lapse video (thread)
« on: July 06, 2013, 04:33 PM »
I thought there was already a timelapse video thread here but couldnt find any -
so have a look at this absolutely amazing video, with the option to post any others if you want

Oh yeah, there's the option to run it at "Original" quality (4k?), or see it on vimeo

I'm a complete noob in the world of blogs - or whatever I need here (read on!)

Here's what I need:

  • I want to set up a quick website (focus is images - I just want to show a bunch of samples)
  • I want people to be able to contact me directly (PM style) without having to join the site
(I dunno here: I dont really want to publicly display an email address, but maybe there's another workaround here? Including an email address as an image could be a solution.)

Tumblr is actually really nice -
I can make a really simple scrollable page with a series of images:

Screenshot - 2013-05-20 , 21_26_29.png

BUT - contact is a problem via Tumblr:
there is an 'ask' page, but the question get's posted to my page/blog (possibly only when I answer it, but still - it's privacy is uncertain).

It's nothing top-secret, I just want people to be able to contact me and that they be able to safely include *their* contact details.

Free is good - but monthly payment is not a problem.
Dont have time/money at the moment to get this done properly i.e. my own website - but also this might only be a short-term site.

Inconsistently buggy behaviours discovered when spring-cleaning screenshot directory:

Thumbs have focus!

(1)
expected behaviour is -
if I click on a thumb & delete using del key - and then use up-arrow, focus moves to the file above where the deleted file was.

This used to work as above, and seems to work occasionally (when deleting one group of files it worked), but mostly not - usually it jumps to first subfolder in the directory.

(2)
I guess this is minor but still unexpected:

I often use shift and arrow keys to select a group/sequence of files.
When working up the thmbnails, the last selected file is, as expected, shown in main panel.
When working *down* the thmbnails, the *first* selected file is *incorrectly* always shown in main panel.

[edit] the project this was planned for has fallen through so I wont be spending too much time testing - but feel free to still contribute suggestions [/edit]
Looking for help here - I cant find a clear recommendation myself.

Need to be:

  • a collaborative online outliner
  • user-friendly (working with some people who are fairly basic users)
  • show each person (individually) what is new since their last visit (*important*)
  • each user can set their choice of language for interface - choice of English and German would be enough (or even just German is such a site exists)
  • preferably free, or not requiring payments for each user (but this at the bottom of the list cause it isnt so important!)

If a spreadsheet meets all requirements apart from outliner, I would consider

THanks in advance :-*

Checkvist sounds good so I'll get an account there and check it out myself:

Screenshot Captor / Help with Hotkeys to tweak selection area [SC]
« on: April 26, 2013, 04:35 AM »
What are the shortcuts for tweaking the selection area?
They may be in the helpfile but I coulnt find.
(I think these shortcuts might be working a bit wonky - or maybe it just me)

To be 100% clear:
Select an area.
Hold mouse over one edge and check the "zoom-box" bottom left in main pane.
Various shortcuts work to move that edge, one pixel at a time.

TBH I can never remember them and chance my arm and usually figure it out.

I tried Ctrl+Arrowkeys and Ctrl+Alt+Arrowkeys and Crtl+Shift+Arrowkeys.
All seemed to work, but today they appear to affect the frame at both sides, i.e. the selection-box moves, instead of becoming one pixel smaller (or bigger) on one side.

So maybe if someone could tell me which shortcuts I *should* be using, hopefully then I'll understand better/explain better what's happening.
Thanks.

Living Room / Movies you've seen lately
« on: March 28, 2013, 02:37 PM »
The thread What are your favorite movies? is pretty active at the moment,
but I thought I'd add this one just for stuff you've seen lately (good or bad).

Hell (German/Swiss) 2011. Director Tim Fehlbaum's first full length feature.
I saw it dubbed in English. It got away with dubbing for me, cause it's not dialogue heavy.

Screenshot - 2013-03-28 , 20_19_41.png

'Hell' actually means bright in German. The photography is great (that should be cinematography I guess), often extremely overexposed in the heat of the sun. A post apocalyptic thriller in a world where the sun is 10° hotter; formerly fertile land and forests are dead. People looking for water/food. Good suspense. Not much visible gore which suits me fine ;-)
Gets 5.9 at IMDB - I thought it was a great movie, sure I could fault it, but for me it was a 7 or more.

Living Room / How to make money from music / The art of asking
« on: March 23, 2013, 03:27 PM »
How to make money from music:

A TED talk from Amanda Palmer, entitled "The art of asking"
Amanda Palmer is a musician, who, amongst a lot of other things, made over 1 million dollars on Kickstarter (dc thread).
And then gave her album away - FLAC version was donationware IIRC; 320kbps mp3 was a free download.

Topicwise, you may find the talk a bit slow moving initially, but it's well worth sticking with.
Oh yeah, it's very slightly NSFW at times (but not in any exciting way :p)

Windows 7
Here's how it works for me (like in XP)**

(Sorry, I dont know the correct terminology here which made it difficult to search for this & difficult to describe).

Lets say you have 5 windows open. A/B/C/D/E
And I'll call the desktop 'DT'

B has focus.
When you hit alttab the next in line is the last window that had focus let's say that was D.

Switch to E, then the sequence will be E/B/D/A/DT
Desktop always shows at the end of the first line of thumbnails.

If I switch to desktop and back to E, when I go to alttab again, the desktop will still show thus - E/B/D/A/DT

so my question is if there is a way to force the desktop to act as a window i.e. to also show according to the rule of 'which had focus last' ?

Screenshot - 2013-03-19 , 13_08_37.png

** disclaimer - I did tweak alttab a little after installing win 7 but I think that was only to get rid of the pesky window-frame previews it showed. I have alt-tab set up pretty much in the 'traditional' XP way but with thumbnails.

General Software Discussion / Software to control Wallpaper?
« on: March 15, 2013, 10:12 AM »
Does some software exist for working with desktop wallpaper?

Current options for desktop wallpaper are:
  • Fit
  • Fill
  • Stretch
  • Tile
  • Centre

Fit will stretch a smaller image to desktop height (doesnt look good)
Centre will not reduce larger images to screen size
so,
what's missing is an option like you get in good viewers:
  • Centre - and reduce to fit in screen if necessary

Naturally I could resize the images, but that means a lot less flexibility (i.e. I'm a lazy beggar)

Another nice option would be the ability to cycle manually forward/back through images on the desktop via a hotkey.

"Save Copy of Image As"

Screenshot - 2013-01-15 , 14_16_21.png

Okay, it doesnt say 'Save as' but I did expect it to work similarly
-
what I expected:
do a bit of work on a file, then 'save as' would leave the original untouched, and create a new copy which would include any modifications made.
what we get:
both files are changed.

i.e. the correct approach would be to create a copy and *then* edit it.

I dont expect you to change the behaviour* but I have gotten caught by this a couple of times before, and was wondering if you could make the wording clearer. I dont even have a suggestion myself, so I'm throwing it out there....

*  but if it were an option it would be clearer.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Copy files and paste later [CH&S]
« on: January 11, 2013, 03:15 AM »
hi mouser
I presume you're aware of the dottech comparision between a few clipboard managers (dc thread)
It prompted me to ask:

I was wondering would you have any interest in implementing the functionality where you can copy files and paste them *after* having copied and/or pasted other clips. (The feature is apparently in ClipX, Ditto and CLCL - I'm not trying to make you competetive, honestly lol)

Living Room / Reducing Scales - Recurring numbers & Patterns
« on: December 04, 2012, 07:25 AM »
I work with scaled drawings.

Sometimes I have to produce various versions of a drawing at differnet scales.
I can do it fine, but to be honest I find it hard to get my head around some of the concepts.

Here's an example - the reason I even thought of posting it is the numbers with the recurring numbers after the decimal point.
I reduce a drawing/figure @ 1:00 to 70% of original size.

1:100 * 70% =
7:1000 =
1:142.857142857142∞

The 857142 bit is repeating so I added the infinity symbol ∞ (not sure if that's correct)

Later, I need to reduce the new modified version to 1:50 (which would be 50% of the first figure).
i.e. I want to reduce (1:100 * 70%) to 1:50  i.e. to (1:100 * 50%)

100 * 70% = 70
100 * 50% = 50

70 * X = 50
X = 50/70 = 0.7142857142857142∞
which would be 71.42857142857142∞%

which number is exactly half of the number for the first 70% reduction (1:100 * 70%) = 1:142.857142857142

I cannot explain that - I possibly could figure it out, but I'll just enjoy it and move on.
Re the recurring number - if I divide or multiply by two, the result seems to be always recurring at some stage after the decimal point.
BTW is that the correct name - simply "recurring digit" ?

PS thank god I dont work with imperial scales :p

General Software Discussion / What would YOU like to change in Win.8
« on: November 29, 2012, 05:00 AM »
There been reports of possible new Windows OS's already in 2013 - Windows "Blue" (dc).

I do have some ideas of what I'd like to change in Windows 8, but they mostly small. I'm not an original thinker in terms of GUI, but I do tend to have lots of ideas of how to fix minor problems. They need to cater more to people who are *not* using a touch screen. The ability to turn off some of these swipe gestures (they drive me mad when using a trackpad - things I didnt want or request poping up out of nowhere >:()

Funnily enough -even though it's something very superficial- I think if they made the Windows 8 desktop theme more like the tiled theme, people would find the dichotomy easier to take.

Now, I suspect many will say something along the lines of revert to Windows 7 (and have the touch interface seperate).
If that is roughly your response - then maybe you could say what changes you would like made to Windows 7 please thanks :P ;-)

General Software Discussion / Tips for Windows 8 (got any?)

Have you any tips for windows 8? (I'll try adding your tips to first post, with the post number)

EDIT/ tips/tweaks here are untested unless otherwise stated !

IMPORTANT NOTE:/ many of these tips may not apply to Windows 8.1 :-(

Desktop bias (see below for the other half):

Winkey+x [anyone got a link for a good cheat sheet that's freely available?]

Change the default language of your OS. Changing to English worked perfectly for me ♥ (seems to be available for all versions of Win8)

>How to Create a System Image with Windows 8.1 File History<
A previous tip showed how to create a system image in Windows 8. In Windows 8.1, Microsoft changed the procedure and made it even harder to find. In this tip, I will give the new way to make a system image

create an image - Windows 8
Win+W to search settings > search for 'Windows 7..." - open "Windows 7 File Recovery" -a weird hangover name, in spite of it simply being called "Backup or Restore" in Win7.
~ Restore seems a bit buggy here - it cant find my image/backup on an external usb hd. But if I use the restore disk (dont forget to create it!) I can find the backup okay. Helped by Windows 8 forums tutorials (NOTE: I just wanted to check that it could find the backup - I didnt need to restore, so I didnt try to).
System Restore - Win+W to search settings for same and you're covered (also available via control panel)

Mount ISO's: Right-click it in Explorer, click Mount and you can view it as a virtual drive, launch the files it contains, or add more if you like. (ewemoa #15)

File associations:
Control Panel [>Programs] >Default Programs >Associate a file type with a specific program (Set Associations)
or
from the Start Screen, type Default Programs and proceed as above in Control Panel (thanks 4wd)

Boot to desktop: NOTE: 8.1 seems to be more intelligent and goes directly to desktop on a PC/laptop - not sure if this can now be adjusted within Windows UI, I presume so...
I followed these instructions to boot directly to desktop and it works:
http://winaero.com/b...ny-third-party-tool/ (phitsc #27) [worked for me too with OEM windows - see post 32]
or
Go to the start screen and type in "schedule" to search for Schedule Task in Settings. Click on Task Scheduler Library to the left, and select Create Task. Name your task something like "Boot to desktop." Now select the Triggers tab, choose New, and use the drop-down box to select starting the task "At log on." Click OK and go to the Actions tab, choose New, and enter "explorer" for the Program/Script value. Press OK, save the task, and restart to test it out!

Screenshot Captor / Ode to the SC Popup Dialogue + Request
« on: October 04, 2012, 08:13 AM »
Mouser spoke about the post capture pop-up dialogue recently as something more for beginners. I find it gives great flexibility myself - if I'm doing a batch of screenshots, I'll change the 'after capture' setting at the bottom of the dialogue to [stay minimised in tray] and choose whatever action I want for the following captures, (usually [Keep image and hide]). Afterwards I'll enable the popup dialogue again *if I remember* - as I dont know what I'll want to do with the next screenshot (often I'll just want to copy the filepath to the clipboard).

The weaklink in that workflow is re-enabling the popup which has to be done in preferences AFAICS**

An easier way to re-enable the pop-up would be very helpful for working this way.
I had been thinking of a hotkey to toggle it, but that might be problematic (is it on or off, with what settings, etc). Maybe an option to enable via systray right-click would be the best (& easiest?) way.
Even an option to disable via menu might be problematic - again, with what settings? Unless last used settings are remembered - the danger there being if [Discard] was the last option used...

**Edit
see mouser's screenshot below showing systtray menu option.
I thought it was a toggle option, but it isn't. You have to choose one of the other options (Hide/Show main form) to disable the popup. I was a bit confused by the use of the word 'Form' for the main window, but I figured it out ;-)

I want to send a batch file to someone in a corporate environment. I thought I'd send it as a text file but then realised their AV will probably kickup a fuss.
Then I though to just have the 'code' in the body of the email but their AV might pick up on that too (?)
I dont want to get my email (address) blocked :-\

I know that google drive is blocked for them, so probably lots of other sites are too.

So, just wondering if you've any suggestions, or do you think I'd get away with pasting it in email body?

It's a simple batch file that will create a list of files in the folder the file is in (+ sub-folders).
I patched it together from various sources so it may be 'funny peculiar' - but it works ;-)

Code: Text [Select]
  1. @ echo off
  2. chdir /C %~dp0
  3. dir/o /s >dir.txt
  4. exit

Screenshot Captor / Screenshot captor keeping focus
« on: September 18, 2012, 03:46 AM »
SC keeps focus after taking a screenshot when using the pop-up dialogue.
I havent really tested it, but have noticed that this is the case after:

  • 1) area capture (Shift+PrtScr) with popup dialogue when [Keep and hide] is selected
  • 2) grab current screen (PrtScr) with popup dialogue when [Keep and hide] is selected
  • 3) **

I disabled the tray info-popups, but that didnt help.

** I thought it was also the case after grab current screen (PrtScr) with popup dialogue disabled - but that works now (will keep an eye on it).

Living Room / [proper] Camera meets [not proper] Smartphone
« on: August 26, 2012, 07:53 AM »
You're probably well confused by that title. I would have liked to be able to write "[improper] smartphone", but that would have given the wrong impression ;-)

Cameras in smartphones have improved over the years. There was one last year that had something like a 42MP sensor, so as it could offer zoom that wasnt just enlarge those pixels (zoom x3 -at a lower resolution- sorry, I cant remember which make/model.)

But the camera is limited by the smartphone design.
Nikon are making, I think, the first attempt to cross a half decent pocket camera and, well, a Google OS - Android 2.3 (they chose 2.3 to spare the battery and CPU).
So there's no phone really... But it is a step in that direction.

The Nikon Coolpix S800c is "a 16-megapixel, 10x zoom, WiFi-enabled pocket digital camera".
