Bad news: this wonderful extension has changed owner and now has been classified as malware by Google.

Good news: someone added a replacement for The Great Suspender... The Marvellous Suspender: https://chrome.googl...imajpfpamcfhoaifemoa . It's the last version of the old extension before crap was added to it.

A while ago YouTube turned off their email notifications (apparently because hardly anyone actually opened those emails). If you, like me, have a channel you follow closely (or more than one), I recommend Notifications for YouTube (Chrome extension) as an alternative.

Once you've set it up, the extension's icon will notify you about new uploads. Very unobtrusive, I like it.

In its "Find" window (Ctrl-f) it does not seem to be possible to permanently disable "Search subdirectories", but other than that it's love at first sight.

But at least one can use the Filter (Ctrl-F12) to only show matching files in a given folder.

In trying to remember the *Commander options, I ran across one that I think I'll try.  The price tag is a bit extreme (up there with DOpus), but it is a perpetual license, unlike DOpus. https://fman.io/

I used to use DOpus many years ago (loved it!), but there came a time where I couldn't justify the cost anymore, for what I used it for.

There's also Multi Commander (free, donationware), favourably mentioned by Shades in Re: Batch file to move files (less than total size) from A to B, along with a link to 26 third-party file managers.

But, from the OP, is a FM really what you want?  The task sounds rather like backup/directory synchronization, e.g. by something like Karen's Replicator (free, donationware)

Thanks guys, Altap Salamander does look promising! It does have a transfer speed limit option, yay. And it's search-as-you-type feature is pretty cool.

In its "Find" window (Ctrl-f) it does not seem to be possible to permanently disable "Search subdirectories", but other than that it's love at first sight.

I might check out the other suggested alternatives another day.

Hi,

I'm looking for a two-panel file manager to locally move files from folder X to Y every now and then. It should reload the previously opened folders when started. A transfer speed limit option (like the FileZilla FTP client has) would be lovely but is not required.

The ability to filter folder contents (only show files that match "abc") also would be nice to have - this is also something FileZilla has.

Any recommendations? I've googled around and after reading several reviews I tried Q-Dir but didn't really like it.

It should be freeware if possible, or donationware.

Hi,

when I open a new Chrome window by clicking its icon the window opens maximized as it should, but when I use AutoHotkey to open a link in Chrome, Chrome's window opens in a weird size for a few weeks now, way too small. It used to be a bigger size, I don't know what happened.

I've searched Google for the answer, but what was recommended there either doesn't work or I couldn't understand it. Any pointers?

fSekrit uses PECompact and not UPX, but same same

I did ponder a bit whether to continue using executable compression – one of the points of fSekrit is to be tiny, but the savings might not be worth it compared to hassle from shitty AV software... And the 1.40 exe would still be < 100kb without compression.

Last year I had one folder it couldn't delete, couldn't do anything with it.
Can't remember what happened in the end, think I gave up and reinstalled Windows or formatted the drive.
Most obstinate file/folder I've had in 40+ years of playing with computers 🤣

fSekrit 1.40 was just quarantined by Windows, as Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.C!ml.

This probably is a false positive, this happened before, but is there anything left to do (other than to unquarantine it manually)?

I found two more folders that couldn't be deleted, but this time on external drives, not C: - this time, rmdir failed twice, but SetACL Studio got the job done. NICE!

On my lazy days I close the browser in my computers using Windows Task Manager or the infinitely better Process Explorer. This leaves the tabs intact and as browsers do a thing called 'lazy loading' of content in tabs, closing and re-opening browsers is hardly an issue. 'Lazy loading' means loading content when the tab is actually selected and not before.

Yes, Process Explorer is great to kill Chrome in a way that it will re-open all tabs 99% of the time. I use it for every reboot.

I saw that others here use the The Great Suspender Chrome extension too, but I felt it deserves its own thread.

I've been using it for a long time, but only somewhat recently I decided to change its settings again: I now allow it to suspend everything after only 15 minutes (it's smart enough to not do so when you are still actively using a tab, like writing a forum post) - even the active tabs of all the currently open Chrome windows, which I excluded before. I only put very few URLs on the exclusion list, the sites I use most often.

The result? Chrome feels faster than before, CPU load went down even more!

The setting "automatically unsuspend when tab gains focus" is fast enough for me (using a SSD), only Gmail is a bit slow to load.

Yeah, I've considered going multi-monitor in the past, but couldn't justify it (yet?): hardware cost, desk space, energy usage...

This comes built-in to Windows 10. Just press Win+Tab or click on the Task Views icon (if you have it enabled) near the start bar. Then click the New Desktop button at the top left.

If you are a AutoHotkey user: if you google around a bit you can find quite a few scripts to help manage the Windows 10 desktops, just found this for example so you can use hotkeys to switch desktops - https://www.computer....com/tips/tip224.htm - (haven't tried it so it may no longer work correctly if something has changed).

There is an alternative way of seeing/testing if a second monitor is for you or not. This does require a separate computer or laptop on the same LAN network next to each other. Or at least in eye-shot.
Software like: Barrier  an open source alternative for the nowadays way too expensive Synergy  can be used to share keyboard/mouse/clipboard controls between computers that use these software.

Your main computer acts as the server, the others as clients. When the software is enabled, you can use one and the same keyboard/mouse to control all the connected computers.

I thought so too, at first, but then I read that they acknowledged Windows 10 issues in 2016, promising an update... but the last available version is from 2014. 

The last update for mDesktop was in 2018, and the support department hasn't been around/active since 2014, it seems , so I'd not even have tried it, would I've been in your shoes...

Thanks, Lintalist, I just tried VirtuaWin (the installer didn't mention Windows 10 and the UI looks like it hasn't received updates in years), but that resulted in a similarly negative experience as with mDesktop. Everything was suddenly hidden! At least I managed to unhide everything (but to only one desktop... weird!), but the UI isn't really self-explanatory.


So far this has been quite a frustrating experience. Did everyone more or less give up working on software in this category when Windows 10 came around?

Thanks, the mDesktop description sounded good... I installed it - followed by near-instant regret: after trying a hotkey it minimized EVERYTHING (on all desktops) in a way that it looked like everything had crashed. But everything was minimized in a way that I couldn't access most programs anymore. 

Had to reboot, then I uninstalled mDesktop.

I don't even know yet if Windows restores Chrome tabs to different desktops after a reboot, but I'm willing to find out.

Hi,

I've decided to use virtual desktops in Windows 10, kinda like a trial period to see how much I like it. I don't even know yet if Windows restores Chrome tabs to different desktops after a reboot, but I'm willing to find out. 

Are there any tools you can recommend? I've found this "5 best virtual desktop software for Windows 10" article but would like feedback here before I randomly start installing stuff, and I don't plan to spend money right away. To be able to use Win+Ctrl+Left/Right to move between desktops is a great start.

Yes, something like the https://slashdot.org/ approach (report+quote) is really useful, not only because links sometimes end up being broken.

And yes, selling your extension to malware guys sucks. I wonder what could prevent that... Chrome auto-disabling an extension once the owner changes, so that the user has to enable it again manually? But then some bad guys could try to just 'lease' the extension from the owner, abusing it without a change in ownership. But that would probably be limited to countries like Russia, where it's not likely to suffer the consequences if you distribute malware to people outside of Russia. (Yes, I read in this case it's probably Turkey, not Russia.)

Not too familiar with the tax code, but this could mean that he already paid off the student loans and the IRS just won't let use those payments to reduce his own taxes.
