Aaaaand the problem has returned.  :(

102
Is it only for Win32Pad?

Yes.

It sounds like you may have picked up some prankware.  Have you done any scans such as Malwarebytes anti-malware?  I am not familiar with that editor but if it uses an .ini file to save settings it is possible the value could have changed somehow.

If there are no malwares found a reinstall(if it is the installer version) may clear it up.
Also if you are running any kind of window management utility such as WinSize2 or similar a change could have occurred there somehow.

I've used Windows' built-in thingy to do a full scan yesterday, but it only found something ugly in a completely unrelated installer that I downloaded many, many years ago and never executed (yay!).

The weird thing is: when I ran win32pad again just now, the problem was gone! After being there for days... just gone! How weird is that?!? (I've literally done nothing at/ with my PC since my post above, just switched off the monitor.)

I'll keep you posted if it comes back.

Edit:  by the way, what version of Windows are you running?  Windows 8.x and later has the Desktop as sort of a child window(anything that has that new fangled Start Screen the Desktop has quirks.)  Sometimes running the program As Administrator can get around it.  No idea why the sudden change though unless you picked up some prankware.

Windows 10.

I like to use win32pad (http://www.gena01.com/win32pad/). It's fast, lightweight, has all the basic features I need (and hasn't been updated in 10 years... Sad!)

Since a few days ago, *all* win32pad windows are suddenly set to "always on top" when I open them! Even after rebooting Windows. I have no idea how that happened. How can I fix that? Currently, I'm using AutoHotkey (WinSet) to manually (temporarily) fix it, but that is quite annoying.

WTF! Thanks for posting! This is an attack vector I never had on my radar. I rarely download subtitles (just once in the last x months), and since I still have the file on my PC I checked it out: Just plain text, everything ok.

To allow the developers more time to address the vulnerabilities, we’ve decided not to publish any further technical details at this point.

I'm curious how exactly the attack works... I had assumed players just load text files for subtitles and display what's in there (not looking for code there), but then I only ever saw .srt files and a similar format. According to them "there are over 25 subtitle formats in use", so I imagine that more exotic subtitle formats can better be used for attacks.

Hello Carl Stone, good one! It sounds like you made more than you paid for your trip there - a great start!

If you haven't already, you might want to read this book: Michael Talbot - The Holographic Universe

but since it requires Java I'm now looking for an alternative
Hmm, so you've been scared by the FUD-campaign?

Which FUD campaign exactly?

No, I just stopped liking Java. 8)

Hi!

I've used FreeMind (http://freemind.sour.../index.php/Main_Page) in the past, and it was good enough for what I needed, but since it requires Java I'm now looking for an alternative. Preferably freeware for Windows (and maybe Android), but maybe a free web solution will do.

Any recommendations? I found these with good reviews:

https://www.mindmeister.com is a (free when you only need up to 3 maps) web solution. Android version too (https://play.google....sterlabs.mindmeister).

https://coggle.it is another online tool, 1 map is free (but not with all advanced features available). Sign-In with Google and a good auto-save feature, I like it. Check out the screenshot there and those on https://coggle.it/gallery - beautiful! :-*

https://bubbl.us/ online tool, very easy to use, you can try it without having to register (free when you only need up to 3 maps)

http://www.xmind.net site is 'down' (maintenance)

Why on earth would anybody in their right mind join a thing like this?

I can see the appeal for some people: https://21.co/ lists a few venture capitalists, some of which get approached by more than a 1000 startups a year. So, if you're after venture capital and want to approach one of them, and can do so (more or less) uniquely by paying a few bucks, maybe it helps to stand out more.

111
Yeah, interesting topic! I found this fascinating:

The amount of computations required to carry out the attack is staggering: nine quintillion (9,223,372,036,854,775,808) SHA1 computations in total which took 6,500 years of CPU computation to complete the attack first phase and 110 years of GPU computation to complete the second phase.

Hello,

research around the question "what if you could see into the future?" was mentioned on the radio the other day (I forgot which university it was), and I'd like to find out what my fellow forum users think about the topic. :)

It's about events* in your life that personally/ directly affect you; please vote in both polls:

http://vote.pollcode.com/69469933

*by event I mean something extraordinary like meeting the love of your life or crashing your car, not Adele releasing a song you dislike. 8)

Arrival (Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi). Loved it! :-*

"When twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world, linguistics professor Louise Banks is tasked with interpreting the language of the apparent alien visitors."

For whatever reason some people don't seem to understand the movie, but it still made it (currently as #209) into IMDb's Top Rated Movies. Will watch it again some day for sure!

@MilesAhead: ah, good to know.

@Deozaan: yes, both are the same. No, never was a fan of that.  8)

I tried chkdsk but it didn't show anything not normal.

Yes, those are HDDs.

> if its only a mirror, then why not just wipe it and re-synch?

Because it's >1 TB of data and both drives are connected only by USB 2.0.  :-[

No "File History" in use here.

WinDirStat finally helped me find the issue: a file with a >4 GB size only had a "size on disk" of a few MB on one drive but >4 GB size on the other. So weird! A similar finding with a >1 GB file. Now both drives have the same available disk space again! The file synchronizer might have an issue with larger files, I'll keep an eye on this.

Thanks for all your help!  :-*

116
Hello,

I have two external HDs (same model) and mirror everything from #1 to #2 with a file synchronizer tool every now and then. But Windows Explorer now tells me that there are about 5.8 GB more on #2. Huh?

I then used Beyond Compare to compare both drives, but wasn't able to find the difference. Everything looks the same.

What can cause this? I never saw this in the past.

Interstellar I just found tiresome -- I actually gave up on it. Most voice parts delivered in a sort of a monotone that just left me jaded.
EDIT//  Dunno, maybe I'll try Interstellar again sometime - it gets very good score on imdb

Hey tomos! Yes, try it again, it was one of the best movies I saw in the last 3 years. :) (Wouldn't have minded it being a bit shorter though. 8) ) And I just saw that it even entered IMDb's Top 250 (as #33).

Thanks Ath, that looks promising!

On https://www.xamarin.com/platform they say "With C# and Visual Studio, you can share the same code on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac and more."

I saw Spectral (Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller). I enjoyed it! :)

General Software Discussion / Question re/ future software project
« on: January 04, 2017, 10:12 AM »
Hello and a happy new year!

For a future software project around data entry and basic file edits, I'm pondering what would be a good solution for these requirements:

- should work for Windows+Apple, maybe even for Android
(So my first thought was a browser-based solution might work...)

- users should be able to use it offline [syncing data when being online again later]
(...but then I read that Chrome can only handle a relatively small cache for web apps, not a few 100 MB)

I won't be coding this myself, at the moment I only need some general ideas of how to set something like this up. How would you approach something like this?

After posting I had hibernated my system, C: usage still at 100% when I did so. When I woke it up again many hours later, C: usage dropped to (close to) 0% right away. So weird...

Thank you for your specific suggestions! I'll try those once/ if the 100% thing returns.

General Software Discussion / Windows 10: C: (SSD) usage is 100%
« on: December 12, 2016, 04:38 AM »
Hi,

a few days after Windows 10 installed its Anniversary update I noticed in the task manager that C: is used 100% virtually constantly, writing about 3 MB/s continually. A reboot didn't help. It's not Windows Defender and I couldn't find any other task to blame. According to the task manager it's "System" that's doing this (while mostly using 1-2% CPU time).

How to fix this... Any ideas? I don't believe this can be good for the SSD.

125
> Winamp had a built in option for that. It can be found when going to 'plugins' and select 'DSP Effect.'

Thanks for sharing. Too late for me, but I'll keep it in mind should my other solution stop working.  :)
