(to anyone interested)
this deskrule search engine is now a finished product. If anyone here likes it please use the social buttons at the bottom of the website to spread the word, thanks!

here's an updated version 1.0.0.20 that offers a much simpler search mode for everyday use (when you don't need all the advanced boolean algebra and parameters). For information and downloading click here

Hi Stoic and thanks for testing

internally the program is doing tons of self-checks, and some of them obviously failed, that's why you get the message at the end about the assertion errors. Many of them are not a big deal, but if you want me to check, just open the file, and email it to me.

all these checks make running much slower than it should be, so if you find the speed good as it is, you will be pleasantly impressed in the future!

to clear a previous filter, press CTRL+A to select all the rules, then DEL. You will find more useful tips in the help file (press F1 while the program is running)

last but not least, as I am not monitoring this thread regularly, please send me an email if you need assistance with something or other feedback. You will find the email link in ABOUT dialog!

thanks again
nikos

thanks for the feedback everybody. I understand that the GUI as it is is very "geeky" but that's just testing the underlying search engine. In the final version there will be another search mode (probably simple/advanced tab somewhere) that will be more easy to operate (minus the flexibility of course)

I am using the scheme already for crack tracker
pipe delimited is functional and makes for shorter keys that can be emailed

for the key/keygen part i believe i have it pretty much sorted out, see here:
www.zabkat.com/blog/27Jun10-openssl-keygen.htm

not that it will stop piracy either, but it will kill all keygens, leaving just the patches :)

crack tracker cannot stop cracks, even if you eliminate all the existing ones, new ones will come to replace them, it is a constant battle

as to how sales will be affected once you make it harder for people to find warez, it is debatable. Obviously I believe that legitimate sales will increase, as people really wanting the software will have no other option. But if you are on a really crowded market they may just go to your easy to crack competitor...

I believe you can already track other things like music and video, choosing a relevant keyword. Most of the search engines CT uses are generic and should find non-software downloads, probably illegal!

perhaps you misunderstood, crack tracker is not a search engine, it looks for cracks to your software. By default not all internal search engines are enabled too, so use View > Engines menu to tick them all active

crack tracker has gone beta and almost a full product.

if you fancy giving me a hand with beta testing and locating your dodgy
downloads at the same time, here's the BETA download link:
www.cracktracker.net
(the website is beta version too :)

if you encounter any ASSERTion errors, just click on IGNORE button to
continue

if you have any other problems or you have any feedback or suggestions, use
Help > Send feedback menu command

thanks!

I made up my mind to go pro with it (sell it eventually)
but if you contribute in testing then you won't be unrewarded :)

there is already a way to send crash logs and such from HELP menu

I personally have a big problem with piracy. Although I give away a free version, most people use a keygen to pirate xplorer2

When I got tired of hunting keygens, instead of blocking them I went for a different approach: if xplorer2 detects a keygenned key it 'allows' it but every now and then sends such people to this page: www.zabkat.com/warez.htm

from the statistics of this page I know that 90%+ of my users use such fake keys!

I will be adding many things in the future, including the option to automatically file the DMCA complaint email. In the meantime, as this tool is based on a quirky 'technology' I would appreciate your feedback, whether it works for you or not.

anyone can find cracks to any software, just google <your_program_name> + rapidshare. The hard bit is finding all these illegal downloads, and this tool of mine helps find many of them. Not all but every little helps!

Many people here are selling their software for a living. For all you authors suffering from cracks and keygens, this tool I made will make things a bit easier. It searches for illegal downloads of your software and presents them in a list, so you can file a DMCA complaint with rapidshare and similar hosting companies, so that your illegal downloads are removed (and then more will be listed :))

For more information and to download the crack tracker, see here:
www.zabkat.com/blog/14Mar09-crack-tracker.htm

as this is work in progress I would appreciate your feedback

thanks

Living Room / Re: ASP Members/Posters, Come Out of the Woodwork!

i joined last november. It's quite useful, but newsgroup members post way too much information. Hey, it's only $100, and the way the dollar is nowadays, that's peanuts :)

it's funny to see that many ASP members don't have a clue about programming, or at least that's the way it comes across. But then again good programmers and good businessmen don't necessarily mix!

is there a way to finger the badly behaved extensions? Other than disabling all of them and then enabling them one by one
-nosh

yes, use process explorer to see a list of DLLs in xplorer2, then make a note of the crash address and you've got your culprit!

General Software Discussion / Re: What Are Your Views On BUGS?
« on: February 03, 2008, 08:18 AM »
nosh, if you are talking about crashes on exit, these are invariably not xplorer2's fault. You don't see them in other file managers (maybe) because x2's advanced threading architecture reveals bugs in shell extensions (mostly in delphi) using static objects. There's nothing I can do about it!

and the obvious workaround is not to quit x2 :)
you can minimize it in your syste tray if you prefer to have it out of sight

thanks guys! :beerchug:

i was totally surprised myself since i was up against hot competition, programs like isobuster whose mailing list is 5-10 times larger than mine!

but i am totally chuffed regardless, and maybe this is going to be just the thing that will convince me to quit the day job and concentrate on xplorer2 and software in general

then you can expect more goodies :)

well i did say that the aforementioned Contents column doesn't do exactly what you're after, no? Why don't I turn the table round and ask you to present us with a TC column that does a summary/non-recursive column like x2 does it? :)

or perhaps TC's "mini-scrap" pane (View menu) equivalent that can be used for bookmarks, drop stack, even regular file management?
http://www.zabkat.com/pic/s2a.png

there's ups and downs in all programs and your end choise is a compromise. You may be 100% satisfied with TC but that doesn't mean that it is objectively superior to xplorer2. I urge you to have a look at the tour and the various demo videos:
www.zabkat.com/tour1.htm
www.zabkat.com/x2facts.htm

i rest my case!

use Alt+K and select "Contents" stock column. It computes a total number (files+folders) so it isn't exactly what you look for. For your extra credit, define a coloring rule (Customize | Color coding) based on this column, which is active when the number is >=300

we can go on like that for ages :)

one's favorite file manager is like one's favorite team, the selection involves more fanaticism than reason. All the top-league file managers do more or less the same thing. Even in terms of speed there isn't much to tell them apart, e.g. see:
http://www.zabkat.com/blog/27May07.htm

49
well, you did pick the weakest part of xplorer2 (mass rename), but you CAN use metadata in renames. For example, see this demo:
(article) http://www.zabkat.com/blog/15Apr07.htm
(demo) http://www.zabkat.com/blog/wink/id3.htm

50
you're the developer of xplorer², so you know more than me about interaction of your software with Windows

guilty as charged!
but i can't sit back and listen to misinformed criticism. Take this other one from another poster:

The system metadata and user-defined metadata architecture is integrated at the core of the product: into the file display, file filtering, file color-highlighting, file searching, and the file renamer tool (!), too.  No other file manager I know of has such a thing, not even Dopus.

this is plain wrong too. Just press Alt+K in xplorer2 and see what sort of details/metadata are available, and all can be used in searches, color hilighting, the lot -- just read about xplorer2 hyperfilters (not available in the free lite version)

in fact this "all metadata search" feature was in xplorer2 from day 1 and way before TC had it. It is clear who copied who here. But I welcome competition among file manager authors, it's good for the users :)
