78  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Best method for a dead simple web site? on: December 14, 2013, 03:26:19 PM
Setting up your own domain should be recognized as a different beast from hosted solutions.
All or most hosted solutions like WordPress.com are basically sign up and 'Add new something' and a bit more for choosing themes for example.
As far as self hosted goes the WP installer is surely the easiest? with or without dealing with Fantastico type tools. Also with WP afterwards you need something like ftp rarely (often never) which adds another layer of complexity for the non-techy user.
79  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Google ranking change turns table on spammers on: December 13, 2013, 10:17:35 PM
All good if Google and other search engines actually reward. If you get rid of something bad you better reward the good behaviour. In my experience setting up sites the latter is rare. I know of two sure ways of being ranked well:
1)A niche/specific subject or topic. You will see a high rank if someone explicitly queries the specific key words ... obviously if I search for "cody donationcoder" I should get donationcoder.com on page one. Doesn't need a complicated algorithm.
2)The site is popular .... again, if first result is cnn.com/_topic containing your query string_ what's the point of algorithms?

82  Main Area and Open Discussion / General Software Discussion / Re: Downloading videos from Youtube on: December 12, 2013, 06:08:28 PM
Interesting - haven't seen it myself. I have seen some of the options greyed out - I dont know if this is because YT is overloaded and blocks the higher quality versions - or if it decides that your connection isnt good enough to handle them.

This has definitely happened to me. Whether or not youtube is making the choice, based on a hiccup in connection or something more accurate, is another question  undecided

It's the stuff of Hollywood high budget flops, that's for sure. If they actually gain anything from doing this I would be beyond shocked.
85  Main Area and Open Discussion / Non-Windows Software / Re: LINUX: Linux Mint 16 "Petra" just released on: December 09, 2013, 10:36:54 AM
Not that a new version of LM will fix wifi issues necessarily but may be I should burn 16 and see if it is better than 13...

Interesting...one of the first things that swayed me towards Mint as a general purpose and new-user distro was how well it worked with wifi. At least for me. Guess it's yet another example of how YMMV when it comes to Linux...

At least partly a case of which wireless card is in there. If it was a desktop I would be willing to change any or all components to fit but laptop less so.  Even with firmware update, wireless card not soldered and compatible replacement it's still hit and miss in my (limited) experience.

@IainB
The Streisand Effect strikes again and by question I meant "It's a really clear infograph - no?"

I am trying (sometimes failing) to stay away from climate type debates, things won't happen in my lifetime and I don't have kids, so it's fine. Main reason I posted was wondering why it is in the humour thread.
90  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: silly humor - post 'em here! [warning some NSFW and adult content] on: December 01, 2013, 05:58:49 PM
Why is this in the humour thread?

By the way I have a reply to it, if the question is serious, but won't post it  tongue

^That's not what I'm saying.  smiley

You don't want it to be legislated or regulated by a gov? I don't want billion pages of legislation on the books either but alternatives like self-education are never enough because the means don't exist in enough cases.
93  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Your tax dollars at work: Now FDA proposes to ban a brand of cookie? on: November 25, 2013, 05:08:44 PM
What is the responsibility here?
If I know processed meat is bad for me, researched and told by government panel or even not, but can't afford to buy non-processed/organic everybody should remain silent about it until the end of time? Will the company producing the processed version do me the favor without a push?
94  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Your tax dollars at work: Now FDA proposes to ban a brand of cookie? on: November 25, 2013, 03:49:49 PM
The attitude that because I know this and that is bad (or not) means that not only everyone should know too but they should have the means and opportunity to make better choices is all too prevalent.
Goes back to the heart of my argument that people like to blame the institutions of government that provide a service without acknowledging why they exist. All the while pretending corrupt president X and congressman Y = services are bad, not needed, etc.
95  DonationCoder.com Software / N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: NANY 2014 Pledge: Productivity utility on: November 25, 2013, 12:03:06 PM

96  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Your tax dollars at work: Now FDA proposes to ban a brand of cookie? on: November 24, 2013, 02:24:31 PM
All I know is that an oil that is naturally solid or semi solid at room or body temperature - and nonsoluble - can be more dangerous and has more clogging capacity. That is more common sense than science. Fat from butter worse than vegetable oil, shortening worse than corn oil, etc.

Role of government in quality of life...some people wish to make it an individual's own responsibility, no problem there as long as you are not substituting the gov with corporations and framing it as an individual choice
97  Main Area and Open Discussion / Living Room / Re: Your tax dollars at work: Now FDA proposes to ban a brand of cookie? on: November 24, 2013, 10:36:59 AM
I understand why someone would not want laws like that, by government or anybody. I am not saying I am for it, no one can accuse me of being a commie when it comes to regulating chocolate/sweets. I am personally bank rolling PepsiCo for decades now  tongue

But when an article claims.

Quote
the FDA claims a ban may prevent between 3,000 and 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year. But evidence for this proposition is equivocal at best.

I move along. Anybody (me, you, even the FDA itself) who wants to put a doubt on that is being silly. I am not a MD but believe that's not in doubt, might be 'only' 1000 or 1 million but not it's not in doubt.

Once this is installed, and used, and a computer is restored to an earlier time, would this program be non-useable again? Because restoring to an earlier time would 'uninstall' it, and then it would be past the GOTD period, and not installable again.
