You can now download, and generate unlimited keys for, the Windows 7 Release candidate.

See here for more information.

Please note: This version will begin shutting down every 2 hours in March of 2010 with the RC expiring altogether in June of 2010.

Hmm, the 7077 I'm running is good to March 1,2010 so I see no reason to go through yet another reinstall.  The 32 bit version seems fine.  I can run just about anything but Sandboxie.

7402
I was relying on Sandboxie as the surfing protection of choice, but it will never support 64 bit.  I'm wondering what people running Vista64 are using that's similar?

I liked Sandboxie because it was easy to turn it off when I wasn't using it.  Kind of a pain to reboot before installing even the smallest utility.  I don't like firewalls and av shields.  I'd rather use something that just traps and redirects disk writes like Sandboxie.. or at least a similar idea.

Hmmmmmmmm got my Adata 8 GB I was waiting for. Only thing I noticed so far is the rubber cap is a lot tighter fit.  Must've been user feedback about the previous ones sliding off too easily.  Just hope it doesn't stress the electricals every time I pull the cap off.

If you are only interested in recent folders, then Folder Cache is slightly more efficient, but if you would also like to maintain a list of recent programs to reopen you may wish to use ReOpen instead.  See announcement thread for details.

Edit:  Added command to Tray Icon Menu to display Readme file. (If Readme.txt isn't in the same folder as FolderCache.exe the command is disabled.)

v. 1.1 available.  Reduced CPU load.  Also calls the WMI function less often during polling. A lot less resource hungry than previous versions.  :Thmbsup:

7407
Please update to v. 1.02 available for download now.  I optimized the polling to reduce WMI and CPU load.

I find it great for ice cream.  :)

I do not use tidyread and have the same issue on 64bit

Hmm, weird.  Soon as I copied my Minefield profile over from a backup it went away. Maybe the TidyRead is a coincidence.  That's the last thing I tried on the browser when stuff went weird on me and I couldn't get it to work right.  So I suspected it.  In any case the profile replacement fixed me up for some reason.

General Software Discussion / Re: Program At This Site????

Sorry, but I want something really simple like Quick Tray.
I didn't like PopSel or QSel.

QuickTray looks a bit like my launcher.  Only thing with mine is it looks more like a text editor.  The entire path to the folder, program or shortcut is a line of text.  You can save groups of them to a filename.  If you have several programs folders whatever that you use together, double click the saved filename and they all come up in the launcher. Press one button and all selections are launched at once.  Name is Faves.  There's a .NET version and FavesSA(which is newer and has more features) that is a stand-alone Delphi 5 executable(no .NET required works on everything from Win98 2nd ed. on.)

In addition to launching you can use it to monitor explorer folders and automatically add them to the list.  All my software is fully enabled.  There's usually a donation button in the tray icon, start menu or readme file but that's it.  No time limits or expirations.

http://www.favessoft.com/

The FavesSA installer installs either or both FavesSA and XMon. If you just want the launcher, when you run the setup program choose to install FavesSA only.

FavesSA and XMon both put their icons in the Task Tray, not on the Taskbar.  I single click on the Task Tray Icon toggles hide/view.

When I was messing with NT 4 Server there was a guy who ported su to Windows.  You could have your user account in Operators group, so that you could install software, register ActiveX Controls, do backups etc.. but for higher privilege work you could su with the admin password.  The neat thing is he had a utility for creating shortcuts for common tasks.   He had some encryption method so that your Admin password wasn't stored in the shortcut.  I think you had to set it up by running a utility for the particular shortcut. The encrypted password input only worked for that shortcut. I don't remember all the details but it was pretty secure while still easy to use.

I suspect it had something to do with TidyRead FireFox AddOn.  I only tried it on the 64 bit machine.  I deleted the FireFox profile folder and copied one I saved a couple of weeks ago and the site scrolls spiffy now.

Guess it wasn't DC after all.  :)  Whew!!

7414
Weirdest thing I ever saw.  On 32 bit machine the scrolling is totally snappy. On 64 bit machine the rendering is fragmented and nearly unusable.  Really really weird.

Only on DonationCoder.com too.

edit:  hmmm whatever it is doesn't seem to effect Opera.

Depending on the codec, AviDemux might work for you.  I don't think it has movie preview, just the image of the frame at the cursor.  But it has split, and append functions.  As you might expect, it has some doodads for .avi input.  Like in Automation tab you can set it to automatically build VBR Map, rebuild index if needed etc when you open a file or load for append.  Also if you google there's a .js script out there someplace to append a chain of files like avi.001 avi.002 etc..

You can type in the times, and it copies the section out from the nearest I Frame on begin and end.  For cutting and appending it's very fast.

Some types of input I haven't had much luck with it such as .wmv.  But for .avi esp. it's good.  Also has a Wiki page with command line options for complex script usage.

btw if you try it out on Windows I recommend using the GTK ui. It's a lot less flaky than the alternative at the moment.

CONFIRMED

What's weird is my other machine is running Windows7, same Minefield with same setting and it's totally smooth!!  This rig has Vista64. Weird.  Oh well, that's a relief.  I was doing restore points, ClearType Font tuning, the whole 9 yards. :)

7417
All of a sudden today it seems like this site jitters wickedly when I scroll down in Minefield.  I don't notice it on any other page.  Is it just me? :)

(Seems to be on pages with lots of text in small font)

Developer's Corner / Re: Open Folder Hack
« on: May 01, 2009, 06:32 PM »
hmmmmmmm guess ahk has some restrictions about using a hotkey inside a function.  Just quickly looking through some user defined functions I see people using a line label like you do for gosub.. maybe that's why.  It would be nice to put this hack in a separate script in a very usable way.

So far I cleaned it up just a bit to use a variable for the Open Folder Dialog so that the same variable can be used by the hotkey to see if that window is active. After return from
FileSelectFile() the SelectedFolder variable should either contain the folder path or blank.  Note that ErrorLevel should be non-0 on success because the hotkey code sends {Esc} to close the dialog.

;set File Open Dialog to Prompt users how to select a folder
FolderPrompt = Alt Right Mouse Click to select Folder
FileSelectFile,DummyVar,2,%A_MyDocuments%\*.*,%FolderPrompt%,All Files(*.*)
If Not SelectedFolder
MsgBox, 0, , No Folder Selected
Else
MsgBox, 0, , Folder Selected is %SelectedFolder%
ExitApp

!RButton::
IfWinActive,%FolderPrompt%
{
    Clipboard =
    Send ^c
    ClipWait,2
    SelectedFolder = %Clipboard%
    Send {Esc}
}
Return

Thanks 4wd.  You saved my sanity!!  The global has it set as you say but I added that line to the ahk.properties and it worked.   :up:

@4wd check out DVD Rebuilder

You're right, I forgot that one.

I rarely re-encode MPEG2 to MPEG2, (in fact I can't remember the last time), mostly I go MPEG2 -> MPEG4.

However, both HC Enc and QuEnc don't seem to be updated that often.
I prefer to use ffmpeg, mencoder (which is ffmpeg based anyway) or Avidemux's LAVC encoder, all of which are multi-threaded so that kind of nullifies any advantage of DVD Rebuilder's method.

I think you'll find there's a big difference in video frames processed per second via multiprocessing vs multithreading.  If you are curious try FAVC avi=>dvd conversion on a quadcore then run say DVD Flick on the same machine.

In any event DVD Rebuilder is for rebuilding DVDs.  For quick and dirty I like AutoGK going the other way.  Of course it depends what you need.  If you are blowing it up to show on a 50" HDTV then you probably are finicky about quality and artifacts.  I have 27" CRT tube type color TV with 1080i.  An .avi file made from an good looking HD source, as example, coded one pass at around 1800 kbps bitrate looks fine upconverted to 1080i.  On the DVDRB conversions I can now set HC to best quality mode since it doesn't take all day to run 2 passes.  FAVC has its quirks.  Sometimes it coughs on bitrate spikes.  But for doing it quick it kicks ass.

Here's another good resource:
http://forum.digital-digest.com/

Only thing is I think they were threatened with legal action so be sure to read the rules. If you say "I have a problem with DVD Shrink" then you will be told to see Rule 19 and that will be the end of it.  But there's lots of good info to be had there.

7421
Well as I said I am not looking for code highlighting. What I am looking for is an advanced text pattern processor kind of thing that can analyze the text and create different color blocks based on words, repeats, indents, based on anything text pretty much. Trying to create rules for this kind of stuff is I doubt possible with those editors. It looks like Vim scripting is not that hard I will try later somethings with it.

Hmmm, you might be able to code it into Emacs if you're willing to lisp(probably supports other script languages by now but lisp is the only one I'm sure about.)

7422
What about SciTE ?

Both Notepad++ and Notepad2 are based on it and both it and they have code highlighting which is rule based I believe.

Also, PSPad allows you to edit the highlighter settings.

Speaking of Scite.. do you happen to know how to bring up an ahk script without folding?  Most of my scripts are 2 screens so I really don't need them folded.  Drives me nuts to have to open the menu and hit the Toggle All Folds every time I open a script. (If I can sneak in a tech support question here) :)

@4wd check out DVD Rebuilder

There's a free version but if you have multiple core PC the Pro version is worth the $30.  On my quad core it opens 4 video encoders simultaneously. You can choose Rejig(a transcoder) HC Encode or QuEnc.  Also supports CCE but that encoder is not included.  This program does a nice job.  It breaks the video into pieces, reencodes each section with variable bitrate, then puts the pieces back together and muxes the audio back in.  The free version actually works but as might be expected, it's a lot slower since you can only launch one instance of the video encoder.  Plus the free version is older code and not as good at handling a VIDEO_TS folder that's been made by other tools.  Also it keeps logs. If you use the default 3 click mode, if things get interrupted you can resume the processing rather than back to square one.

The licensing is very reasonable.  It has a copy protection scheme, but the author's site tracks your email used in the install, and allows 5 simultaneous installs. After a time the installs "fall off the end of the queue" so unless you are installing on a bunch of machines you shouldn't have any problem if you need to reinstall it for whatever reason.

edit:  btw DVD Rebuilder is not a ripper.  It doesn't bypass copy protection.  You need a
VIDEO_TS folder on your HD to use it.  How you got it there the author doesn't want to know. :)

Developer's Corner / Open Folder Hack
« on: May 01, 2009, 01:12 AM »
I really really hate the SHBrowseForFolder() thing they give you in Windows. How about this for an OpenFolder Hack using the standard FileOpen Dialog?  Might seem different at first but any users who like hotkey gizmos might not mind Alt-RightClicking the Mouse as alternative to using that lame folder browser!!

ahk script that demonstrates folder selected by Alt Right Clicking the mouse

; use FiLeOpen Dialog instead of that stupid BrowseForFolder thing!

#NoEnv  ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases.
SendMode Input  ; Recommended for new scripts due to its superior speed and reliability.
SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir%  ; Ensures a consistent starting directory.
selectopen = 1
FileSelectFile,SelectedFolder,2,%A_MyDocuments%\*.*,Alt Right Mouse Click to select Folder,All Files(*.*)
selectopen = 0
If ErrorLevel
ExitApp

    Clipboard =
    Send ^c
    ClipWait,2
    SelectedFolder = %Clipboard%
    Send {Esc}
    MsgBox, 0, , Folder Selected is %Clipboard%
    ExitApp
}

A good resource is VideoHelp

Most software is mirrored on their server.  They have lists of DVD players with "remote hacks" that magically turn region 1 players into region free. Forums for video programming, subtitles, conversions etc.. and each software tool has a space with a listing of guides for the tool, if available.
