General Software Discussion / Adobe Flash no McAfee
« on: August 11, 2015, 09:11 AM »
I just updated Adobe Flash to 18.0.0.232.  It looks like McAfee is no longer bundled with the installer.  There was no option to not install McAfee and no listing for McAfee in Programs and Features uninstall list.

OK, so I have 100 GB of free storage on OneDrive.  Now where do I backup my Cloud?

(and do I have to play The Stones while doing it?)

General Software Discussion / Free Online Virusscan drag and drop?
« on: August 03, 2015, 02:39 PM »
Anyone know of, or is it even possible, to drag and drop multiple files, on a web form of a multi-virus scan site?

One at a time is way tedious.  I only have MBAM installed and it insists on doing the preliminary system check even if I just did that a moment ago.  And anyway it would be cooler to do something like VirusTotal if I didn't have to do individual uploads.

Perfect Effects 9.5 100% discount

http://www.topsoftba...-category/giveaways/

I am not skilled with image editors and similar software so I don't know how this compares to something like Paint.NET  It seems to be exclusively for applying filters.  I can tell you I just installed it.  It accepted the license key and activated.

The reason I am trying it, even though I do not use this type of software very often, is one of the videos on their site showed background removal by just dragging the mouse to indicate what to remove.  It wasn't necessary to closely trace the boundary or mess with creating layers.  How well it works in practice I may find out later.

One thing that struck me about the online tutorial videos is one photo was used to demontrate applying a filter but the completed effect was always shown with a different photo.  Hmm, perhaps the person doing the demos had a better speaking voice than filter tuning skills?

But I can always uninstall it if it sucks.  :)

General Software Discussion / Firefox Nightly Builds : Windows
« on: July 13, 2015, 07:13 AM »
I have been using the 32 bit Firefox Nightly Build for Windows for a few days.  So far everything works fine.  So this morning I figured what the hell and installed the x64 version.  So far so good.

It picks up all the bookmarks and extensions from an installed Firefox if you already have one.  It installs in the folder Nightly and can be removed without hosing your stable FF installation.

The difference I see when loading tabs in the x64 version I get a tiny spinning wheel until the page fills in, rather than the one about an inch in diameter the 32 bit was using.  It seems to fill in tabs a bit faster than the 32 bit also.

I haven't noticed any extensions not working or anything unusual.

Both Firefox and Cyberfox have a stable 39.0 available.

Living Room / Anyone subscribed to BookBarbarian online service?
« on: July 03, 2015, 02:42 PM »
BookBarbarian sounds like a giveaway site for eBooks.  But when I got the subscription confirmation it sounds more like Book of the Month Club where they just send you stuff and expect you to pay for it.  Anyone have experience with them?

OkayFreedom VPN Premium 1 Yr free

I installed it and registered the software as described in the instructions.  I haven't had a chance to test out how useful it is.  For WiFi it probably works best with providers with a Laissez-faire attitude.  Public libraries and colleges are likely to see a VPN and think you are stealing media.

But anyway, if you want to encrypt your network traffic you may want to try it.  Can't beat the price.

Start Menu X Pro for free

A treat for me since I was using Start Menu X free version.  This utility used to be named Vista Start Menu.  It has some nice features.  I do not enable the "skip start screen" on Windows 8 because it seems to load after I am on the desktop.  That's the only real bug I have noticed in the free version.

I have installed the Pro but have not rebooted yet.

The download zip just requires running the setup program in the same folder as the included activation file.

Anyway by default it is set up as a nice compromise between XP style and Vista style.  The Start Folders cascade to the right but have a horizontal scroll bar.  I like it.  :)

General Software Discussion / change chrome browser fonts?
« on: June 18, 2015, 02:18 PM »
I am looking for a way to change the UI fonts in chrome browser without changing the theme or increasing the MessageBox font size in Windows.  The latter makes the chrome font larger but all dialog boxes get bigger too.  Not good.  :)

Ideally something like the Firefox theme font and size changer would exist for chrome.

Looking through Softpedia Windows downloads I ran across Mustang Browser 1.42.90.0

It is based on Chromium.  But the flash player works out of the box.  Also it seems to have built in settings to limit the number of exe instances.  Starting up with a blank page it shows 4.  With 6 tabs open it shows 6.

So far i've installed Fastdial and Vanilla Cookie Manager.  It comes with AdOff already installed.

So far so good.  It has the dialog to import bookmarks and settings just like chrome.
My first impression is it is chrome with a sanity check on the number of running instances.

Edit:  I posted the Softpedia download link because the file seems to be hosted with the download servers.  The home page listed for the program is a commercial consulting site with no link to any freeware I could see.

Edit2:  There seems to be no portable version.  Note that the installer is quite primitive.  You click install and it puts the stuff under Program Files (x86) on a x64 Windows and makes itself the default browser.  It also adds a button to the Taskbar.  Just so you know what to expect.

Edit3:  It is not as super snappy as regular chrome but it seems pretty stingy on memory.  See screen shot.

Capture.PNG

Edit2:  I found a lag when opening new tabs.  It seems to wait until you click the tab to load.  What it turned out to be was Fast Dial.  It was set to load a background image on the new tab page before loading dials.  There is still a bit of a delay when clicking on a new tab where the background is white.  But the delay is much less noticeable if the Fast Dial has this option set to off.  I noticed complaints about slow tab loading for chrome generally and the answer seemed to be to check an extension that manipulates the new tab page.

It seems very usable now.  Looks pretty nice with Vista Aero Theme.

General Software Discussion / Macrium Reflet Free 6.0.684
« on: June 17, 2015, 01:47 PM »
Macrium Reflect ?Free is now v. 6.0.684

Edit:  The editions feature comparison shows the only difference is included support.  This may be the best time to go with the Free Edition.  As far as I know only registered users may register in the forums.  That's another aspect of support I suppose.

Hmm, the page loaded in such a way that all the features appeared as enabled.  :)  Now it makes more sense.  :)

Wise Care 365 Pro free

I haven't used this yet.  But I have used the Wise free Registry Cleaner and Disk Cleaner with good results.  I'm not a believer in real time monitoring stuff unless it is just Shadow redirect of disk writes.

In this one there is no need to register.  Just download and install.  I scanned the installer with MBAM and it came up clean.

I was searching for another free webmail that didn't demand a mobile phone number for registration.  I found a hit in a forum where someone asked the question in 2013 and the answer is still good.

http://www.mail.com

I signed up.  So far so good.  The free account does not have many features.  Although it does stipulate unlimited storage.  They also have a Firefox AddOn so you can check for new email by pushing a button on the toolbar.

I just thought I'd pass it on.  :)

I'm looking for a free Task Manager replacement in Windows 8 that will display total resource usage for multiple instances of a process.  As example google chrome.  If I use Windows Task Manager or the one built into chrome it still makes me do the math for total memory usage etc..  I am on a computer.  It should be able to sum that stuff up for me.

Anyone know a good freebie with the feature?

General Software Discussion / HomeFolder2
« on: June 10, 2015, 05:12 PM »
Due to a new feature of the AHK WinGet function that returns the path of the program that owns a window I have released a different take on my HomeFolder utility called HomeFolder2.

Note: Because it is HomeFolder2 I set the version info at 2.0.0.0.
I don't expect it to need any updates.  :)

Aside from the about box, donate etc.. the main function amounts to this
$+NumpadSub::
  WinGet,pPath,ProcessPath,A
    If (pPath)
    {
      n := InStr(pPath,"\",,0)
      StringLeft,sl,pPath,n
      Run %sl%
    }
  return

http://milesaheadsoftware.org

Compiled as 32 bit it seems to work well with windows owned by both 32 and 64 bit exes.  Lexicos does some magic inside ahk.  :)

Edit: for those not familiar with the first implementation of HomeFolder, the idea is if you want to go to the install folder of a program, activate its main window by clicking on it if it is not on top already, and hit the Shift Number Pad Minus key.  An Explorer window should open to that folder.  If the folder is already open in Explorer it may seem that nothing has happened.  It may depend if you have Folder settings to open Explorer folders in a separate process.  I use the same process so it only opens if it is not already up.

Living Room / End of a good thing
« on: June 06, 2015, 02:06 PM »
I've come to the end of a good deal.  On some items Walmart would let you select the local FedEx Office Store as a Store Pickup with no shipping charges.  There is one about a mile from my "headquarters" if you want to call it that.  :)

It was great for getting small electronics stuff like mouse pads, optical mice, usb drives etc..

Now they have discontinued the policy.  I suppose there were too many people like me buying small items for it to be profitable.  It's a shame.  To get to a Walmart from here is about a 2 hour journey by train then bus.  That's to get to the bus stop.  It's another 10 minutes or so just to walk across the parking lot into the store.

Plus the bus stop benches are not covered.  It is definitely a fair weather only activity.  :)

It was fun while it lasted.  :)

I am trying to block tracking cookies in Chrome browser.  The suggested technique is to block all 3rd party cookies then add individual sites(as in where you have a logon account) to the exception list.  Unfortunately I can type in domains with no typo.  This time it will add it to the list, that time it won't.  It could take a really long time to do it this way.

Does anyone have a better approach?  There has got to be a way to avoid that broken edit box.

General Software Discussion / Anyone Using SlimBrowser?
« on: June 04, 2015, 03:30 PM »
Anyone using SlimBrowser ?

I tried a few browsers today with ToolWiz TimeFreeze enabled so I could erase the magic slate by just rebooting.  I wonder if anyone has experience with and an opinion on SlimBrowser?  I liked that it seemed pretty snappy and didn't use gobs of memory.  I am leery of the fact it is IE based with multiple tabs sort of like MaxThon.  The other annoyance is it is set up with a bunch of commerce buttons such as eBay etc..

The buttons can easily be removed.  First thing it does when it cones up is ask where you want to import stuff from.  I selected Firefox and it populated the BookmarksBar with my folders without manual intervention.  I just had to delete the bookmark crap already in place.  It seems fairly sleek and snappy.  But I am paranoid about anything that can run ActiveX and BHOs.

So far in my quest for a light fast browser I seem to be stuck with K-Meleon.  It's not horrible.  Just lacks panache.  :)

I keep hoping to find something fast off the dime that still has a few features.

I noticed this morning that when I click New replies to your posts, and get the usual list of new replies, what is different is when I read them, then post my own reply in the thread, it comes up again as a new reply to my post.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Found Deals and Discounts / Nektra Spy Studio
« on: May 30, 2015, 07:40 AM »
Nektra Spy Studio is now Freeware:
http://www.nektra.co.../spystudio-purchase/

The company offers support packages as shown in the chart.  I noticed it because it is featured on Shareware on Sale here: http://sharewareonsa...giveaway-coupon-sale

I don't understand it all yet.  But it seems it can virtualize applications a la VMWare ThinApp and also do trace comparisons of program file, registry, api and COM calls, to aid in debugging/troubleshooting.

Looks interesting even if you don't have any applications to publish.

Edit: it has both 32 and 64 bit downloads.
