Living Room / Re: adding memory to my Dell Precision 380
« on: November 01, 2009, 02:47 PM »
Netbooks just sound like small nightmares to me.  I think I'll just tote my full size laptop around.

Anyhow, I second the other sites for memory and also have had good luck at www.mydigitaldiscount.com

Cheers.

I got an ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-P about 2 months ago and I am *loving* it. The RAM upgrade took a whole 10 minutes, the majority of the time spent locating a usable screwdriver and getting the screw out (it was surprisingly long). 1GB switched out for 2, and it was a whole lot easier than the whole take-out-the-keyboard-and-half-the-internals that would have been required for my old Compaq NC6000!

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you touch-type or hunt-and-peck?
« on: September 27, 2009, 07:44 PM »
I went through typing classes in 4th-6th grade and hated it - because you couldn't look at the keyboard while you typed. If I looked at it, I could type at 100+ WPM (the fastest of anyone at the school, except maybe a couple of the tech teachers). Not looking drew me into the 40-60 range.

I've been using a QWERTY keyboard1 since I've been on PCs (age 3 and beyond, almost 17 now :D) and I always typed faster than anyone else I knew. I just had to look at the freaking keyboard to do it. :'( Eventually, in mid-7th grade I got my Compaq laptop (now deceased, mini-review on new computer to come soon) and the keyboard was smaller, and most of the non-alphanumeric keys were a different size. Strangely enough, I was able to touch type almost instantly on it. In late 8th grade, I typed up a whole 3 page report without looking at the keyboard OR screen, making only 2 spelling errors in the entire thing (no grammar, either); to top that, I was on the phone as well. It took me a whopping 10 minutes, 15 if you include printing and review :). </shameless bragging>

Last semester (Spring 09) I took 'Business Foundations', a class where typing is a hard-pushed skill. My record in that class was over 140WPM w/ 0 errors (once again, fastest - I actually had kids making remarks about "the keyboard is gonna catch on fire" and "holy <lots of variations>"), and I type on average about 120WPM. Not bad, considering my mom (an Office Manager, sole employee) types at about 70WPM, with my 10 year old sister coming in 3rd at around 30, and my dad falling last; I would have to guess 15-25 (and that 25 is pushing it).

So if you plan to do anything on a computer that requires more typing than say, FARR usage or typing URLs and other short phrases or sentences (that means everyone posting here!), touch typing will help immensely. It may come naturally, randomly, or with dedication and maybe a short class or two. But once you have it, you will amaze yourself with how slow you used to type, and how much time you save over writing, previous typing methods, or (sometimes) even voice recognition. And then you can use that time for better things. Like programming, and visiting DC, and slipping out a little early for your lunch hour... wait, what? ;D

1For the record: I tried DVORAK months ago: I'll stick with my 'typewriter' top line, TYVM

Oh god, I'm starting to freak ;D

Mom took me out on Friday after school and I had another go at the parking lot - lots more crosstraffic and cut-throughs due to the Blockbuster, so I had a good time interacting with the traffic :P

Ended up hitting 35MPH (intentionally) and that was enough for me (bit fast for a parking lot though) and am getting good at pulling/backing to angled spaces (dad let me park at Wal-Mart this morning, and I did a "good job" at it :)). Also tried to parallel park twice - first time was accurate, but 18" from the curb (about 1/2 a meter) and the 2nd time was 12" (1/3 meter). Not bad for a first time shot in a rigged environment.

Still gotta run down to MVD to get my Learners Permit, guess I'll do that next week or so (school has made things hectic) and then I can get out on the road with all you other crazy people :P

Yeah, out here the driving test is a 3 point turn and a drive around the block.

Some test *rolls eyes*

Thanks for the tips, gonna keep watching this thread :) - I can go out and get my permit any time now (got a certificate that waives the written test, only vision required), and my mom is supposed to let me go back to the parking lot sometime in the next few days

Also, I have a riding lawnmower, and have used it many times over the last few years... hmm, never really thought about it when I was 'driving' it though

106
Yes, it is on the site - top post changed to link at website

I didn't think it would get much attention at all, so I didn't really think about it :P

Post New Requests Here / Re: Lock axis (steering wheel/controller)
« on: August 26, 2009, 05:54 PM »
True, it would be very inaccurate, but for the many flat or almost-flat roads in the game, it would be an acceptable solution :-\

Might have to just tie a string around the pedals and find something to anchor them to...

Yeah, and when you need to do something with both hands, like posting to DC. You can use the feet to drive in that situation. Please notice that this is probably THE only situation where using cruise control while traversing cities is acceptable!

That would give me an excuse to use my new Eee, too! :D

Living Room / Re: Help? Learning how to drive...
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:06 AM »
Actually, three general tips spring to mind:
- Remain in comfortable state of mind during each whole drive.
- Use your mirrors! All of them!! All the time!!!
- When in doubt, it is generally safer to wait or don't do the maneuvering you were planning to do (highway).

I did relax about 45 minutes into it and it did become much easier, so I'll try and relax earlier from now on
I actually ended up seeing several cars that my mom did not because I was using my mirrors and looking over my shoulder (when backing) properly
Ah, yes, I actually had an issue where I was pulling out of the Blockbuster's mini side-parking lot and had to wait for a car that wanted to turn in (I was blocking the lane, unfortunately, but they used the next closest entrance)

@MilesAhead
The SUV is full automatic, and all the cars I will potentially be driving are as well. The parking lot is only used for minimal cross-traffic (about 5 cars an hour, manageable). I also have watched my mom and dad driving (very tuned into everything they do) and have been able to point out things that they don't see yet (ex: that black car right there is gonna merge, you can tell from his slowing down and pulling left a little). My parents want to send me to Bondurant to do advanced driving after I get my permit, so I'll have stable knowledge and skills for defensive driving (thank god they are paying, though ;D).

A tricky thing to do is;  on a empty parking lot make a slalom course (10+ pivot points) that you can easily manage driving forward. Now do the same course backwards without looking back. Use only your mirrors. When you manage to do the course forwards and backwards in the same amount of time, you will have enough 'feeling' for the car you are driving.

I can do a forwards slalom through all the large concrete barriers in the lot (about 15 of em) but I did not try them in Reverse. Might give that a go if I can get my mom to let me have another chance later today :)

You must be so exited about learning to drive!  By now, you know that the act of driving is easy (step on one pedal to move and another to stop, plus a wheel to turn the.  The hard part is knowing what to do when.

Nice list! #1 I'm not sure about - I was still fully alert and excited after almost 90 minutes, but I guess after more stressing situations it could become fatiguing

I don't need to worry about #6 because my dad is a retired police officer and... yeah - getting a speeding ticket would be... less than pleasant

#7 drives me mad - I don't have a cell phone (I do miss the old phone-in-car though!) but the idiots that DO and simply cannot get it through their concrete brain that they need to pull over because they are doing 10 under the limit and swerving worse than a drunk, they make me want to get out and beat them until they are no longer able to physically use the phone (there should be a law allowing that... :P)

All great input :) I'll see about the reverse slalom and see if I can't get some family members to drive in the lot with me to practice distance and other-car interactions

You want a challenge? Drive to Springfield, VA and try the mixing bowl at rush hour. You will hit every conceivable obstacle you can imagine. Also, try NJ. You will not be allowed to make a left turn and as such your driving adventure will vary from anywhere else in the world.

 ;D

Keep in mind that I'm in Arizona, the #1 state for Red Light Runners (even WITH the cameras); also, the speed limit law is, essentially, 'go at a reasonable speed as to keep with traffic' - so even if the Speed Limit is 65 (freeways), most cars do 75-95 and you have to 'keep up with traffic'

I have the danger, I just need the preparations for that first :P

Living Room / Help? Learning how to drive...
« on: August 22, 2009, 03:32 PM »
An odd topic for DC, I know, but this is the most family-like forum that I know of, and because I am most comfortable here than anywhere else on the interwebs, figured why not :)

I am 16 and 9 months, currently in a Drivers Ed class at my high school, with Behind the Wheel (6 hour, in-car with driving instructor from school) lined up for sometime in Sept-Oct, but I have extremely minimal driving experience (no permit yet, getting it next week-ish). I'm hoping that some of you can give me some thoughts on how I can prepare myself better before I go out to BtW (prior experience is a requirement). Also, I live in the US, but anyone at all can help me out - I may be going overseas in a couple of years anyways, and any knowledge is good knowledge!

Yesterday I went out for my first actual 'driving' attempt with my mom, in her 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe (AWD model - explanation below). We went to an almost-abandoned parking lot and she let me have at the wheel. After an hour and 15 minutes or so, I had gotten comfortable and run several self-tests (parking, etc, more below) and we headed home.

FrontView.jpg
BackView.jpg

AWD info:
Spoiler
The AWD isn't real AWD - the Hyundai uses the old 'when traction is lost and/or excessive acceleration demands are met, engage AWD mode'
Therefore, its FWD until I punch the accelerator or the SUV starts to lose traction (I did the former twice)

I am looking for suggestions as to increasingly-difficult maneuvers that I can do (I may be able to have my grandmother and/or dad drive around the lot with me in the coming days/weeks, so multi-car situations are great as well). The parking lot does have light cross traffic, and each end has businesses still open (Blockbuster Video on one end, assorted convenience stores on the other) but it is a good size lot. (Image below is at least 4 years old, if not more, the Wal-Mart there is long gone)

ParkingLot.jpg

Here is my self-made log of what I did last night:
Spoiler
August 21st
5:30 - 6:45PM
Abandoned parking lot/shopping mall @ Peoria and 83rd
Max 25MPH

Slolam (concrete dividers)
Slolam (concrete parking blocks)
Abrupt braking (accidental)
Abrupt acceleration (2x) with auto-engaged AWD
Smooth acceleration
Smooth braking
Parking into/backing out of angled parking spaces
Backing into/pulling out of angled parking spaces
Avoidance of road hazards (glass, etc)
Turn signal use
2-way traffic (1x)
Passing parked cars (1x)

Need to:
Work on backing (farther, less angled) into spaces
Work on pulling (farther) into spaces
Smoother turns
Use turn signals more often
Stop earlier at 'intersections'
Parking into/backing out of straight parking spaces
Parallel parking
Stay closer to right side
Test different gear options (N, +, -)
Test AWD mode
Use cones/obstacles for better practice/prepared tests

Anything that can be done, any suggestions, any thoughts - post 'em! I'll take all the help I can get :)

Right. I don't want to cause DC to lose any donation revenue, or any new members - I was simply pointing out that this method would be easier and, quite the opposite, may entice people to use more DC apps because of less hassle in getting them up and running, and therefore bring in more users and possibly more donations.

From a programming standpoint - yeah, I can see that it will probobally be difficult, I am not sure myself - I've never taken a serious attempt at a login system, so I have no comments for that area. I also agree that it may seem more "large scale" or less family-like, but once again I am not sure about that.

And as scancode pointed out, for those whom do not have internet, the manual key system could stay in place as a fallback.

I'm not pushing this or saying that it absolutely should be done, it is just for discussion and debate. Good points. :)

113
Note to mods: Feel free to move this topic. I wasn't sure exactly where to post it, so if you have a better location for it, have at it :)

I was thinking about how the (as far as I can tell) DC program keys system works a few days ago (was coding and started going off into cyberspace :P) and it occurred to me that would it not be easier to use a DC username/password prompt instead of the license key system?

As far as the end user can see, it would essentially work the same as the system in-place now (I believe) but be faster/easier...

Now:
1) User downloads and installs MSNA, and proceeds to run it
2) User is prompted for Key
3) User logs into DC website, goes to Keys page, locates Key for Mouser's New Super App :-*
4) User inserts key into dialog, and clicks Accept/Save/OK
5) Registration is complete for 6 months or Lifetime
If 6 month: User is prompted again at the end of the 6 month period for a new Key... (back to step 2)

Idea:
1) User downloads and installs MSNA, and proceeds to run it
2) User is prompted for DC login and password information
3) User logs into the application, and it attempts to login
If the login is successful (internet connectivity + correct info) the appropriate Setting (take place of the Key) is set in the program (this can be decided based on the User's login type on the DC forum: Participants/non-donating members get the standard 6 month span, and those whom have donated get their appropriate license span)
If the login fails (no internet connectivity) then the program will continue the nag screen as usual (on every run) BUT it will attempt a connection on every launch UNTIL successful (as to not get phone-home suspicions and whatnot)
If the login fails (bad info) then the program will offer several more tries to login to the account - after X number of bad logins, they can be brought to a prompt to either Register or Recover Password
4) The program will NO LONGER CONNECT TO THE INTERNET (for those suspicious people in the tin foil hats )
If the user has the 6 month license, after 6 months they will be prompted to login again once more, and told about the site and the Donation process, and how it benefits everyone... (return to step 2)

Also, as an added bonus, DCUppdater could do the registration - this would allow ALL programs to be auto registered, and a single login prompt instead of one for every app. This would even allow for only DCUppdater to be downloaded from the site (for Mouser's apps) and all downloads/installs go through that, so Licensing is integrated into it. Download, Install, Login, Use!

Why am I proposing this?
  • It will eliminate "wrong program key" problems here on the forum
  • People won't get "lost" in the website looking for keys
  • It will be faster and easier than the current system
  • There won't be any copy/paste mistakes for keys
  • Those on slow connections won't have to load multiple pages to get to their keys
  • With DCUppdater, all programs can be registered at once - there could even be some type of forum integration in it (Donate, Amount of Credits, Autologin to forum, etc)

Just my thoughts - I don't do anything near this type of web integration in any of the small things I do, so whether or not this will be beneficial in the long run is completely up for debate. But I believe that it will make things a little easier for everyone and allow some type of integration with the DC community as well.

Post New Requests Here / Lock axis (steering wheel/controller)
« on: July 23, 2009, 11:00 PM »
Kind of a strange request, but I need to be able to lock one of my axis (not sure what one, or how to detect it) that is controlled by my "accelerator" pedal on my Logitech Driving Force PRO in order to re-create Cruise Control for my driving games. The easiest way to do it I guess would be to offer all the axis via a menu and offer a detection method when they are changed (so you can tell what one you need to enable for locking). This would enable the program to be used on any controller setup (different controllers have different use of axis) as well as allowing other things to be locked (not sure why you would want it but I'm sure there would be a situation where it would be desired). The axis should lock on a button/hotkey and then unlock on a seperate button OR axis (therefore if I have my Gas locked to simulate Cruise Control, I can then press the Brake down and that would disable the lock, providing a simulation effect).

Summary:
  • List axis available to lock, and show their status in a simple manner
  • Can lock desired axis via button and/or hotkey
  • Can unlock axis via button, hotkey, and/or other axis
  • Avoid any type of messageboxes/GUI popups after setup, to avoid game interference

Anyone up for it? I'm not sure how/if it can be done, but I'm willing to test all the alpha/beta versions you can throw at me. If someone knows of an app that does this already (or can provide Cruise Control for Test Drive Unlimited) that would be great as well.

115
Yikes - Tab Mix Plus is supposed to be compatible with FF 3.5 - some elements work but not all! Can't get Lock/protect tab on context tab menu? But Protect Tab is on Main Context Menu?

Are you using the latest development version? If not, that's probably your problem.

Tab Mix Plus Dev-Build 0.3.7.4pre.090516
http://tmp.garyr.net...x_plus-dev-build.xpi

I'm using that version without any trouble, it seems to work well.
Well...
(Firefox did freak out once last night and my context menu was scrollable because it had so many items, it was as if all my extensions had all menu items enabled - the statusbar was edited as well. A restart of FF fixed it, though)

I would give it a go and see how it works for you.

Great, It's really simple nice

Glad you like it :)

I gave Chrome a 2nd shot on my computer about two weeks ago, and uninstalled it about 3 or so days ago. Mostly just following the opinions already stated, it is fast and it runs javascript (most notably Google's websites like Gmail and YouTube) faster than Firefox (although with 3.5 this isn't so much of a gap anymore, and it may be a dead point). The window-based Incognito browsing is nice, you can have as many normal windows as you want alongside as many Incognito windows that you want - Firefox turns the entire browser upside down when you enter Private Browsing Mode (so if you are like some people I know, your going to cry when you go to switch back and all those hundred(s) of tabs come flying back to be reloaded at once...).

I kept Firefox 3.5 (the Release Candidate) installed when I got Chrome, and while I would open Chrome for just quick IM links or the like, I would always open Firefox when I was planning a long term browsing session (ex longer than 10 minutes or so). Why? I simply cannot lose all my Firefox addons, and with my recent installation of Greasemonkey, that point is simply made more apparant. The lack of addons like AdBlock, Download Statusbar, Fission, Stop-or-Reload (Chrome does this by default, though), ForecastFox, DownloadHelper and NoScript made Chrome feel more like a nice flashy hotel room with a big TV to coax you in, rather than a place I could (comfortably) call "home".

I like how I can make Firefox whatever I want it to be. Until I can sit down and find quality addons that rival those of what I have now, with a better looking theme (am I the only one that hates the way Chrome looks? It's so monotone ) and options that allow me to, like Firefox, customize just about everything I want "No thanks, Google" is all I have to say.

:two:

Computers, more particularly their power supplies, can actually take a lot of bad treatment like "dirty juice" or even milliseconds of no power at all. Get into the named brands of power supplies (and associated price tag) you will be able to mistreat them even more, but not by much.

My computer has a nameless basic power supply, giving out 700W of juice. It has withstood about 5 seconds without power, and the computer didn't even flinch. (This was during a strange, short power outage where we lost power for ~5 seconds, it returned, then about 10 seconds later we lost it for about 8-9, and it ALMOST made it... not quite though)

I have a Linksys WRT350N v1 currently, with a WRT300N v1 that was retired due to wifi issues that we're becoming a problem (along with the fact that I wanted the 350, and if I want it then it must be for the better of the family ;)). Our original Linksys, WRT54G v4, still goes strong (as does the 300 now, the issues stopped (I think it was simply stress + the heat of the modem and itself causing issues - the 350 appears to have better cooling (more open holes)). All of them run DD-WRT firmware as well, and that does seem to keep them running better in both performance and stability than the default Linksys firmware.

FWIW, I have switched the power plugs between the routers (except the 350, it has a specific label saying use ONLY this cable... I doubt it matters, though) with no problems, and we have had several power surges and failures over the years (they are always connected to a surge protector/power strip in my room).

Also, I have found that they can take quite a beating - I use the 54G and 300 for LAN parties at friend's houses, and both in transit and once I've got them setup, they can be hit, sat on, thrown, dropped, and more.... not that I would ADVISE you do any of that, but it has happened.

I would go and grab a new power strip first, and if the problem continues/occurs again, get some ventilation going. I have a computer armoire as well, however my modem and router sit on top of my printer, outside of it. If possible (it may sound somewhat stupid, but it may just work) you might consider buying/using an old 120mm case fan and putting it under/pointing it at the router, and see if that helps - although this would require:
1) the computer tower to have a slot in it that the power cable could fit though
2) the case to be relatively close to the router (or get an extension)
3) the cable to be out of sight for aesthetic purposes (optional, but most people are more picky than I am about stuff like that)

Also: default linksys password is admin/admin, I believe (could also be blank/admin)

General Software Discussion / Re: Generic.dx Trojan
« on: July 14, 2009, 07:34 PM »
All great points, Steven. As I commonly get yelled at here on the forum for this, I don't actively run A/V software - however, I do run any questionable programs through Sandboxie, as well as my own "does this look legitimate" mental check.

Example:

Last night I installed Grand Theft Auto: Vice City from an ISO backup I made a few years back (back when I had the space to do that, before games got 20GB in size). Installation went smoothly, but when I went to run the game it demanded the CD - which had been lost quite a while ago (I can thank my sister for that (and yes, she does like GTA... don't ask)). I checked for any game patches and then went on a search for a no-cd EXE for it - finding one relatively easy. Downloaded, extracted, made a backup of the original, and then moved it in and compared icons and file sizes. With fingers on Control-Alt-Delete, I started it up and all was good.

However, if the icon would have been different or the file size been larger than the original, I would have copied the game files into Sandboxie and ran it within that contained environment so that it could not do any damage outside of the sandbox (and therefore, only damage the copy of the game).

Spoiler
How Sandboxie works:

FrontPageAnimation.gif
FrontPageLegend.png

Everyone has their own approach, and I have mine. Common sense, daily scanning (w/o real time protection), Windows Firewall and Sandboxie is mine, but what works for me may not work for someone else. Pick and choose wisely, and your problems will be minimal.

I'll get you an image resizer - oh look they're free* :P :D

Don't blame me for owning a 8MP and 10.2MP camera :P

(Thank god my dad's computer holds the photos, this little HD would explode)

On a side note, it would be nice if it was possible to resize-on-upload, dunno if that's possible for SMF but for us people that don't pay attention/are lazy *cough*, it would be nice ;)

Don't worry, there are a few vid-gamers here - check out Wreckedcarzz in particular.  He is into it big-time, or at least was.  I, unfortunately, don't have that kind of time anymore....

Yeah, check my Xfire page (click it in my sig) and you can see all the time I spend on games. (I also code things from time to time, most I don't post here but you can find some of my stuff at my website (also in sig) if your interested in that as well - I can also help with computer/game issues, including driver updates and the like)

Sometimes I wonder if I spend too much time gaming :o :-[ ;D

Whoa, freaky... we too have an all-black female German Shepherd, with the same amber/golden eyes :o

Some background about her:
Her name is "Ebony" and she is 6 this year I believe (human years, that is). We have had her for about 4 and a half years now, and she now resides with another new puppy (more on him later). Good dog, smart - she used to not listen unless you indicated that you were in charge, but now I can simply go outside and say something like, "Ebony, go in your run" (as if I am talking to another human - she understands what I tell her quite well... its kind of scary) and she will happily trot into her little gated area (well, its actually quite big, but that's not the point). She was abused as a puppy by her previous owner, beaten and malnourished... we got her from the kennel the day she was to be put down; a friend of my dad's told us about her.

The first year or so especially, when we would go outside to work or clean the yard, she would cower and run away if we we're holding shovels or using a lawnmower, things like that. Now I can walk up to around a foot from her and scoop up what she "leaves behind" and she will casually lay there, looking around or watching me curiously. She knows she is cared for and that this is her home - on several occasions we have left the backyard gate open for several hours, only to come back out to close it and find her watching it to make sure no one comes in that she isn't familiar with. Only once (about 2 months ago) did she wander out, and that was only to the neighbors driveway (she came back on her own will easily and happily, tail wagging, once we came out and saw her).

Doggie #2 (sister's):

My sister recently got out of pull-ups and learned to use the bathroom because of this cute puppy (for the curious, my sister turned 10 in March). I'm not sure what he is, kind of a mix of 3 or so breeds seems to be the consensus. She has named him "Jack" (made it up herself, he seems happy with it as well) and has been living here for the last 2 and a half weeks, along with Ebony (above). The two get along quite well together and it turned out nicely for everyone. My sister goes out at least once if not 2, 3, 4, or 10 times a day (and this is the Arizona desert!) to go play with him and Ebony, and its really changed how she acts. He is a quiet puppy (surprisingly enough) and will keep near Ebony for protection and care, and they wrestle often (usually followed by my sister panicking, thinking they are fighting).

----------

Hamsters (sister's):

We also have two female hamsters, Rose and Patunia. Patunia has taken up some kind of anger-problem and bites anyone that tries to pick her up anymore. It got so bad with the two fighting that they now have separate cages. They are dwarf hamsters, so they don't grow much bigger than the palm of your hand (about half that width wide, same height/length). Cute and fun though, and interesting to watch and pet (well, Rose anyways). Most people wonder how we keep the two names correct - my sister came up with the rather simple/clever idea of using some Scotch tape and writing the name on that tape, and applying it to the cage.

Fish (sister's):

Not much to say here... we originally had 2 fish (this was years back) + a crab ("Crabby" or "Crabbie", not sure). We have gone through several both secret and admitted waves of wish (we had a month-long span of weekly-dying fish, still no idea what caused it :tellme:). There are supposed to be names for the now 5 (? not completely sure) fish we have, along with the two frogs... I don't see it :P

Rabbits (neighbors moved out and abandoned them (!)):

Well, not much of a story here - next door neighbors who have lived there for the last 4 years or so just up-and-left one day, leaving their two rabbits out front. We found them out in their front yard, scared, with no food and water. My mom and sister went out and gave them a bowl of baby carrots and another full of cold water, and that night we went out and "rescued" them from the trash-filled yard (they not only left a massive pile of garbage, but the yard itself was beyond disgusting, littered with everything from pop cans to razor blades to lightbulbs and general filth ).

(Don't ask me why the one bunny is sitting on their carrots... I wouldn't go eating them :P also the dog carrier we used to hold them for prep and transit to the Humane Society looks dirty, but keep in mind it is about 25 years old, so those are simply stains and not actual dirt or anything (we cleaned it prior to bringing Jack home with it, about two weeks before))

I'm kinda glad I am going to be moving out of here in a couple years - my sister wants to become a veterinarian, and it looks like she wants her own zoo as well :tellme:

had to take her to be put to sleep a few months ago aged about 12 years. i won't go into the details other than to say i felt like i'd done the worst thing imaginable; i'd destroyed something of total vitality and joy - i didn't understand what grief meant until that day (i'm incredibly upset now just thinking about it).

we had to put my dog "Clipper" to sleep many years ago.. it was a very hard experience and extremely sad.  but I still have the memories of him so he will live on in that way.. it's all we can do for anyone we love who has to move on.

Several years back I had my own dog, "Duke". He wasn't too smart, but he was playful and hyper, and always wanting to do whatever I did. For some reason he had this love of eating rocks - no matter what the size or quantity. The people whom built the house were kind enough to use the lowest grade dirt available, so rocks were literally everywhere in the yard (you can still find them by digging slightly, but all surface rocks are finally gone, almost 11 years later). One day back in the 3rd grade (I believe, may have been 4th) I was sitting eating lunch at the table, around 12:20, and got this strange feeling of worry and sadness over me. When I got home that day, Duke was not there. My mom and dad had rushed him to the animal hospital due to something with his intestines (I don't remember what specifically), but to save him would cost a several-thousand dollar operation along with expensive medication, and even that wasn't going to guarantee he would live very long, so they had put him to sleep at about 12:20. I still have his small green, clip-together collar.

I loved Duke so much... :'(

EDIT: Here is his collar, the tags still attached (DC forum file size limit reached, so ImageShack... sorry guys)

Didn't even think about a version to sit on the card itself - I coupled that with an autorun.inf file and its on both camera cards, and it works perfectly for me. :-*

I am the family tech and always end up having to pull pictures from flash cards and the like - would it be possible to check a specific drive/range of drives for removable media and then move all the JPG/PNG/TIFF/etc (image format) files from the card and to a new location (set in an INI file or similar, so no user interaction is needed once the program is launched).

An ideal scenario would go something like this (for non-always-on):
  • User inserts card into drive F
  • User runs MoveMyPics.exe
  • Pictures from F go to C:\MyPics (from MoveMyPics.ini)
  • User is notified that images have been moved (or not, INI option?)
  • MoveMyPics closes
  • User removes card

-OR-

Scenario (for always-on):
  • MoveMyPics.exe is launched @ startup
  • User inserts card into drive G
  • MMP "sees" the drive
  • Pictures from G to go C:\MyPics
  • User is/not notified that images have been moved
  • User removes card

Possible? I just need something so I can shove the card in, run the app (or have it running), wait for the images to be moved, and pull the card out - as fast and silent as possible.

Hi,

Do you mean MSE actually deleted your files? Did it have real false positives?

Anyway, I installed and it works great. Really pleased with it so far.

It almost did - it prompted me (as per settings) for action, but by default (because they were "Severe"), if I read the settings correctly, it WOULD have. So, no, but an average user that doesn't touch settings may lose files without a say in the matter. :tellme: The files are 100% safe and clean, just ATi GPU drivers and some programs for my flash drive
