Living Room / Re: The Great Firewall Hunt ... frustrating ...
« on: September 15, 2006, 05:41 PM »
I have gone back to KPF 2.1.5. It may not be perfect, but it does the job. I am just worried about what I am going to use when Vista is released. I dislike most of the firewalls that are out there right now. It is sick in how bloated "personal" firewalls and antivirus have become.

NOD32 and KPF 2.1.5 are my choice programs for now.

254
That's ok. Even winrar can do that. with only 1 archive embeded (no matter how many levels) it is ok to do this, but what about when you have 5 archives in 1 archive, and then in those 5 archives you have 1 archive each, but that 1 archive is a split archive... so to extract the files, you need to get all those 5 archives hidden within each of those split archives and then extract them.. sigh, i guess i am not making much sense, let me see if i can whip up a sample for you...

Would you be able to upload a sample archive (filled with dummy text archives) with the above mentioned structure with it?

255
Hmm.. Total Commander handles that for me. Since it "opens" archives as directories/folders, all you have to do is keep pressing enter/clicking on it till you get to the actual file. Then you can drag/copy it out to the desktop (or wherever) or to the other windowpane. So far I have tested with multi-level combinations of zips and rars nest in each other, 6 archive deep.

General Software Discussion / Re: Data recovery software suggestions?

OMG! I just bought Recover My Files and was about to give a big thumbs up on how it meets my expectations.

Darn, you all beat me to it.  :'(

Thank you all for your help and links.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will give those a shot.

A common trend in recovery software programs seems to be that they like to "specialize" in what they recover. I have seen quite a few programs that focus on memory card, image, word and video recovery.

I was playing with the trial version of EasyRecovery Professional and was very impressed in its layout, recovery options, methods and media formats. Then I looked at the price, about fell off my chair. Talk about sticker shock! :o :'(

I prefer supporting shareware programs and am willing to keep trying to find the perfect shareware data recovery program.  :)

Light weight, truely portable, shareware, lifetime upgrades (or even a small annual fee would ok assuming the program is updated and support is there when it is needed), supports typical media (floppies, HD's flash, raid cdrws, dvdrws), all FAT forms, NTFS,unformatted, raw (any other would be a bonus), decent browsing and none of that online activation junk. I know there is a few other things, but right now that is just off the top of my head.

General Software Discussion / Data recovery software suggestions?

Recently I was in need of a good file recovery program and after doing a general google search, found a couple choice programs. I would welcome input from fellow Cody members (is that proper?), on what they have used and liked or disliked.

General Software Discussion / Re: What to you think of RealPlayer?
« on: September 11, 2006, 10:16 PM »
Realplayer is up there with AO(hell)L  >:(

That's a real compelling argument you have there, Cloq . . . I'll counter it with one of my own!

"Nuh uh!"

 ;D

Lemmesee..

realplayer bloatware.. aohell.. check
realplayer installs junk into the registry and (in my experience) mucks up parts of the registry.. aohell.. check
realplayer installs other junk software if you aren't careful.. aohell.. check
realplayer sends back information without your consent... aohell.. (never could get myself to install it that far to "evaluate it") .. going to say check to that too.  ;D

and my favorite, they both install junk on the desktop and system tray. how sweet is that!

I am a proud user of winrar and have been using it for years.

90% of the time, I use the right click context menu.. Add to archive/Add to archive "xyz.rar" and Extract Here/Extract to XYZ\

Stuffit.. .bleh.  far too many problems ranging for hogging 100% cpu on idle to freezing the system. fun fun. ;D

I am wondering when will software companies starting developing self contained apps. I hate having to hunt down where an application stores its various parts and pieces. It would be great if an application would just install everything it needs into its installation folder. Double click and it runs, don't like it, delete the folder. end of story.

dang.. sorry didn't mean to go off on a tangent, but adobe apps are known for doing this big time.

I switched from Courier to TheBat! primarily because TheBat! supports SSL/TLS authentication and mailbox encryption. That way my username/password and mail data is encrypted both in transmission and on my HD.

Courier has one thing that I really really love, it stores EVERYTHING (config and data) in one file! :-* :-*
Portability/backup has never been easier.

TheBat! does do an UNIX style export of email. It isn't elegant but it does work... to an extent. It exports all your email in huge block.. as for attachments, I never had that work too well. I usually end up copying the attachments out of my email and saving it elsewhere. Since I don't have the need to switch to another email client, I just leave all attachments in my mail as is.

IF and WHEN courier supports SSL/TLS, I will switch over to it in a heartbeat.

Yes since I have an actionpack subscription, I get office 2007 and vista as part of the deal.

Though, I have openoffice portable on my flashdrive.

Living Room / Re: Is firewire better than USB?
« on: June 15, 2006, 10:58 PM »
Good Pros and Cons of both technologies.

http://www.choice.com.au/viewArticle.aspx?id=104527&catId=100533&tid=100008&p=3&title=FireWire+vs+Hi-Speed+USB

Short version:

FireWire, uses a "Peer-to-Peer" architecture in which the peripherals are intelligent and can negotiate bus conflicts to determine which device can best control a data transfer

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 uses a "Master-Slave" architecture in which the computer handles all arbitration functions and dictates data flow to, from and between the attached peripherals (adding additional system overhead and resulting in slower data flow control)

I am not sure what Scott Finnie's issue is with the "silent" operation.. my nod32 is set to silent operation and only pops up with a notification when it detects a virus.

From a fresh install it takes less than 5 minutes to configure.

In the real world, NOD32 has come to the rescue when all else has failed. Norton is a system slug in both performance and protection. What takes *hours* to scan and assuming it can even find the virus/trojan whatnot with Norton/Mcafee/Kaspersky, Nod32 can and has finished scanning and cleaning in roughly 15 mins.

Ever wonder why antivirus programs are 50+ MB in size? Or when you go to uninstall it, there files and registery settings still on your system (some probably still loading at startup)? Or why the majority of antivirus programs make your latest and greatest machine act like a 286?

Bah.. Guess I am just disgusted over certain corporate decisions....  and I am tired. >:(

actually thats a nice site for this kind of stuff: http://www.classicgaming.com

On that note, VDMSound should be installed on any system that will be used to play "classic" games. It emulates DOS Soundblaster and other sound cards so that your games have audio/music when you play them in dosbox window.

Dosbox
dosbox.sourceforge.net/

VDMSound
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=2071

With those two programs, most dos games should play rather well in windows.  8)

I finally found a site that I had in mind years ago..   :P

General Software Discussion / Re: Klipfolio 3b
« on: May 06, 2006, 11:23 AM »
I quite like Klipfolio, lightweight app that does a lot and is actively supported by devs and fans. :-*

Yes, it still has a few bugs (namely adding custom rss feeds don't work properly.. yet) but they are being squashed and fixed.

272
I love the newsletter monthly summary. Nice to be able to see all the hot topics!

273

Lifetime updates sounds nice, but are there updates? ;)

The current version is 9.4, released 4/20//2005 !
SBNews now supports the new yEnc encoding format!

Might want to take a look at what the other projects the author makes.

http://www.newsrobot.com/curproj.html

So he doesn't update his frontpage all that often, you might want to check individual project pages for the updates...  ;D

Choose group.. click download... minimize.. pray for enough HD space.  it's that simple! :D

274
If you are looking for an all around binaries sucker, nothing beats NewsRobot.

What I love the most out of that piece of software is its lifetime registration PLUS registration for all software that the author has made or will make. It's worth every penny.
