  You have to select the closest test site for the test, and other sites as well.  Plus I use different bandwidth-test websites.  Sometimes I'll get lower results from one site than the other, depending on the bottleneck of the site at that time.....

A folded up wet paper towel works well for that also and is much harder to spill.

  I tried it with a paper towel, but you can't get the water/alcohol to cover the heads.  I use paper towels to just clean the heads when they're visibly dirty.

we used to have a HP Photosmart all in one, dont remember the model been about 5 to 6 years ago.  didn't get used a whole lot but we always had to replace the cartridges (genuine) when we had to use it after sitting idle for 9 to 12 months.  i got tired of spending $100 some dollars everytime they wanted to use to print 3 or 4 pages   but the excuse was we spent $400 on it.  some people will never understand1

  I don't know of any ink jet cartridges that won't dry out when not used for that long.  The ink in the well isn't what dries out, but the foam absorbing part right above the print head.  HP states that to recover a cart that stops working from long idle times, put the cart in a shallow dish of water, just enough to soak the print heads.  Then if that don't free things up to put it in a shallow dish of alcohol just enough to cover the print heads.  Of course after this is done you have to thoroughly dry the heads and print out several test pages to work the water or alcohol out of the heads.

  If you have a refill kit, you can try this:  Put a little ink of the proper color for the print head your trying to revive into the syringe, then insert the needle all the way down to the print head and inject a little ink.  If you over-do it you stand the chance of getting ink into one of the other print heads and have to print out a bunch of test pages to flush it out.

General Software Discussion / Re: recommend an app to snapshot & restore a folder? (like version control?)

Hey All-

Can anyone recommend a lightweight app that can watch one of my folders for changes to the files or sub folders and give me a restore/undo so I can backup to a previous version(s)?  Not sure what to call it, and hoping for something minimal (little to no learning curve).  I thought of writing a script to just snapshot periodically with WinZip or 7Z, but figured there's probably something a little more integrated out there.

  You got that right.  I've always hated phones, it was nice whenever I left the house to go somewhere I also got away from the phone.  I have a cell now, but only because of my family if they should have an emergency.

  I've been thinking about going to the Walmart throw-away phones.  The NSA don't know who you are even if they were tracking the phone.

  I've got an old HP Office Jet G85 All In One printer that was my dads, and I inherited it when he died.  It's really quiet, makes excellent copies, and has never had to be serviced with the exception of ink cartridges.  The only thing I don't like about it is the cost of the cartridges, which is why I re-fill my own, but it seems that the cartridges are only good for 2 or 3 re-fills before they don't work anymore.
  If I ever have to buy a new one, it's going to be one with individual ink wells and that DOES NOT have the anti-refill chips installed like the Lexmarks do.  I used to be a real big fan of Lexmark until they started that crap.  Now I wouldn't own one if you gave it to me.....

  Then again, it's much cheaper just to pull the battery out of your phone when not in use, and they can't make that against the law.  If the battery isn't removeable, wrap that sucker in tin foil!

  Not too long ago one of the printer manufactorers announced a trade-in discount.  I'm thinking it was HP, but I could be wrong.  You might want to call HP and ask if they have a trade-in program for their printers.

Speed of the internet itself is one thing, Speed of a certain website is the other thing :=) you can check the speed of your (or any) website with pingdom tools. It is a very handy tool and offers some nice features. just google it and check it out if you are interested in website speed.

  Uh....yeah, which is why I ran it on 4 different sites as stated above.....  I also checked it from several different servers in the Southern U.S..

  The important thing here is that I've got a really good bandwidth.  If I should come across a slower bandwidth problem then I'll know it's not from my end but from the particular website I'm trying to access.  All the bandwidth in the world isn't going to do you any good if the website your trying to connect to is bogged down from internet traffic.  I also have some tools to look for bottlenecks if I should want to check a slow connection, but I find it's faster just to take a look at another website and see if there's a bandwidth problem from my end.

To my understanding, the US does not use diesel engines that much. That always struck me as strange, because families in the US live quite often far apart and diesel would cut the fuel bill significantly when it is time to visit.

It is illegal in the US to have/produce/whatever fuel-efficient automotive engines. So, just throw out all logic and reason... it is what it is. 

(Anyone remember the Volkswagen example? European versions of the exact same model have far higher fuel efficiency, etc.)
