The changes and additions to the popup are great. Especially like the ability of adding a caption here. Just makes it easier and faster for me at least.
Could there be a setting for after adding the caption to save and hide instead of it saving and havng the main window pop up?
Edit: Never mind. Don't know what I was thinking. All I need to do is hit the save & hide.  :-[

I also have a request but for the main window. Could a hotkey (or button to the toolbar) be added to copy the caption of a saved image to the clipboard? Please, please, please...

Bug?
When editing the caption you can select all of the text with the mouse or keyboard fine.
If you right-click the mouse to do a copy the text changes back to unselected.
Ctrl-C works fine.

Just downloaded & started the latest beta. Haven't used it much yet but want to say thanks for

[InterfaceChange] New hierarchical organization of options dialog.

Much easier now to navigate to what I'm looking for.  :)

Edit:
Just tried the "EDITABLE caption" (taken from the help window). Still need to work out my steps flow but this is getting me closer to what I'vebeen wanting to do with SSC.
THANK YOU!

The same thing was happening to me with Win7. Try starting it with 'Run as Administrator'. That worked for me.

Also keep an eye out for sales and specials.

I am usually not one to pay attention to sales, but isn't there some big sale day coming up for electronics in the US (Black Friday)? Might be good timing.

There are also some in store specials going on around here clearing out Win7 laptops & netbooks to make room for the Win8 machines. OfficeMax, Staples, WalMart, etc.

Is this still available until noon eastern today? Wondering since your announcement post was at noon yesterday?

Thanks again.

Is there any way to assign Edit > Copy Text to Clipboard to a hot key combo?
It's not a selection under the Hot Keys - Custom.

Gentle Bump

Does anyone know if what I'm wanting to try is possible with the post capture command line feature?
I'd give it a try, but don't know what to put as the command line parameters.

Thanks very much.

Mouser,

I've been playing with some other different other ways to do want I want and leaving the metadata alone.
I saw Edit > Copy Text to Clipboard before but never tried it to see what it really did.  :-[ And darned if it doesn't place my screenshot comments in the clipboard just like I want, without the [SCM]actwin,0,0,0,0;.
So after I take my screenshot I go and Edit > Copy Image then Edit > Copy Text and last Edit > Copy File Path to the clipboard for each shot and then paste it wherever I want from CHS.

Could each of these be done automatically with Post Capture Commandline Tools to Run field in Post-Capture Options? If so could you or someone please provide a little help on what I should put there?  :tellme:

Thanks,

Screenshot Captor / Re: %num% counter does not function
« on: September 19, 2012, 02:06 PM »
In version 3.08.01 if I add %num% as a counter to file name template it just puts 001 on each file. Hope this can be fixed as soon as possible.

The same was happening to me. Until mouser makes a change, here's how I make it work for me.
If you are using any other fields (ie %datetime%, %date%, etc) in the template that automatically changes the filename on capture, %num% sees the change and doesn't increment. But if you use a fixed name of some type (or in my case %quickfield%) and make changes to it, SC increments the files fine. I then put %datetime% or any other varible field names in the comments field to be saved and it still saves the information needed without affecting the file name.

Hope this helps.

General Software Discussion / Re: Metadata search software
« on: September 15, 2012, 12:01 PM »

I am studying this question.
I think in this post the best way is limit to the fields windows give : summary properties, word file properties, photo exif properties. Really I think is enough with the general properties.

Paperport seems to use these general fields.

 :-[

What I noticed is that not all metadata programs show these, what I call, most basic of all fields (or tags in metadata speak.)
I did test ExifToolGUI with a Word doc and it does show FileName, Author, Keywords, Comments and Category. Filename is always there anyway but I added data to the Author, Keywords, Comments and Category fields/tags using the context-menu > Properties > Summary tab. After I refreshed the file in ExifToolGUI all were displayed.
But PDF's are a different story. For it to display the information it has to be entered into the fields/tags using a PDF program.  For example, I use PDF-XChange viewer. I opened my test PDF, selected Properties and added info to Author, Subject, Keywords, Description Writer and Copyright Notice. (This is more than you are looking for but tested all of them)  After I saved the file and refreshed ExifToolGUI all were shown.
Trying to do the same with the context menu > Properties > Summary tab... I could enter info in these fields but none if it was displayed after going back to ExifToolGUI and refreshing.

By the way, you may have already noticed, ExifToolGUI is a GUI that has been written to work with ExifTool. ExifTool is a command line program only.

Anyway, hope some of this helps you or others that may read it and been through similar frustrations.
I'm still going to try Imatch in a day or two to see if it handles anything differently.

I've been looking for similar needs.
You might take a look at Exiftool and ExiftoolGUI.
http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
It is more for use with photo and camera metadata but can also access some document metadata. They also have an active forum that may be of help.

Another that may be of help is Benubird http://www.debenu.com/products/desktop/debenu-pdf-benubird/.
I haven't tried it yet but there have been some discussion/postings here in the forum regarding it.

I haven't try, but have microsoft word any utility to search for metadata ?

I use word xp or 2002.
I don't remember now.

 :P

I do not have the laptop with the program with me right now. But will check in the morning and let you know.
One thing I found in my search is that all metadata is not created equal. The term is used universally with programs but how the information (comments, descriptions, captions, etc) is saved varies. The Wikipedia page on metadata gives more detail and a better explanation than I can.

Another program I read about earlier today is Imatch at http://www.photools.com
It has also been discussed here in the forums a few times. I also checked in their forum section and it looks like it can do pdf's and maybe Word documents. And they say a new beta version is coming out in a while with more features. It isn't free but is much more reasonably priced than other programs I looked at. If it does what I need it will be worth it.

Did a quick test. Made changes to the Exif IFD0 ImageDescription field.  Replaced the [  ] with {   }, then <   >, and (   ). Checked each time with XnView and ExifTool and all still displayed.
Since it is SSC is also saving the same way in the IPTC Caption-Abstract field I'll try the same tests there and let you know.
May just have to live with it.

Thx.

« on: July 30, 2012, 11:19 AM »

I've found that with most of the image viewer/metadata editors I've checked, they seem to play nicer, or just easier to deal with in jpg than png.  At least as far as the metadata editing or exporting is concerned.

A little bit of a bump on by last question above.
I may have figured out a way to do what I want but need to add steps to edit out the [SCM]actwin... info ahead my image description/caption-abstract (name depends on which metadata field and program used.)

I noticed when using the Objects>Add Caption to Picture from the Toolbar, and %filememo%, the [SCM]actwin... isn't displayed. Any way of doing the same with the field being saved in the metadata?

Thanks,

Mouser,

A follow-up from my old original posts.

This has been an on again / off again need and now it's back on again.
I've been checking a couple of different programs to see if there is a way I can export the filename and comment I type into SSC into a text or csv format I can use elsewhere. A catalog of such.
So I could end up with something like this.
3 Filelist Example - 7_23_2012 , 11_17_24 AM.jpg

I've figured out where in the metadata file the comment (description or caption) is stored, depending on whether it's saved as png or jpg. Studying on how to get it out now.
Screenshots using ExifToolGUI.
1 ExifTool GUI Screenshot - 7_23_2012 , 9_42_25 AM.png

2 SSC ExifTool GUI jpg metadata - 7_23_2012 , 11_23_48 AM.jpg

Can anything be added that will prevent the [SCM]actwin,0,0,0,0; from being saved with in the metadata description? From your earlier answer you are using this data as a marker for one of SSC's features.
I can't remember at the moment which one it was, but one of the programs I tested wouldn't display the metadata until I deleted the brackets ([ ]").

The reason 7-zip was putting everything in one folder was Path mode was set to "No pathnames". Changed it back to "Full pathnames" and it is now extracting fine also. I must have somehow changed it without realizing.  :-[
But hey, I learned something.

I'm using XYplorer for my file manager. Instead of taking a full screen shot I just used the capture region with Screenshot Captor.

Update on my last posts.

Wanted to let you know I figured out why the icons weren't showing up when I ran in portable mode. Actually I don't know why they didn't but here's what I did that makes them show up now.

The 1st couple of times I used 7-Zip to extract the files.
For giggles, I tried using the windows extractor instead.  After using it and opening the OpalCalc.exe everything shows up fine.

The main folder extracted like this:
- 7_21_2012 , 12_34_26 PM.png

The "img" folder like this:
- 7_21_2012 , 12_34_46 PM.png

and Voila:
- 7_21_2012 , 12_36_33 PM.png

I've used 7-zip for all of my un-zipping since I can't remember when and never seemed to have a problem.  Why this time I don't know. Anyway mystery solved  :)

I checked and the "Img" folder was there.

This is a list of the files after the 1st install and tried running a few times:
- 7_21_2012 , 10_24_09 AM.png

So I deleted the folder where I extracted it to and extracted it again. Tried running it with the same results. Here's a file list after the re-extract and trying to run once:
- 7_21_2012 , 10_28_23 AM.png

After I extract it to the folder I am just double clicking the OpalCalc.exe. Correct way to start it?

Not sure if this would be of help but here is a copy of the defaultprefs file after running once.

Hope it worked. 1st time I've tried a file attachment on the forum

I'm away from the machine I have it installed. I'll check it out in the morning and let you know. I know I didn't delete anything in the folder after I un-zipped it. After I check I will delete the folder and extract a new copy and see what happens.

I may not have started it properly?
I downloaded the portable demo, saved and un-zipped in a folder/directory I have for downloads.
Opened the folder and double clicked on OpalCalc.exe
Received this pop-up

- 7_20_2012 , 11_14_41 AM.png

Clicked OK
And up came the OpalCalc screen

- 7_20_2012 , 11_15_29 AM.png

I loaded the portable version of 1.51 and started the tutorial since it popped up. When I type as a continuous calculation I get 1.4.
If I use the win calculator: 5 - 4 + 2 / 10 * 2 = 0.6

OpalCalc SC 1 - 7_20_2012 , 10_02_08 AM.png

I didn't notice this was addressed anywhere.

Living Room / Re: MP3 players for podcasts
« on: July 20, 2012, 08:14 AM »
I also use my player mostly to listen to downloaded podcasts.  I started with a Creative Zen a couple of years ago but switched over to a Sanza Clip+ about a year ago. Mainly because I could more easily access the stored podcasts on the SD card with the Clip+ than with the Zen.
A while after using the Clip+ I changed it over to the Rockbox firmware and love it. Especially for the way it handles the resume playback.  Many times I do not get to listen to an entire podcast.  With Rockbox, when I stop in mid podcast by just turning it off, I can resume by turning it back on, pressing the down keypad three times and then the center button. I'm right where I left off.  The other nice thing I like about this is I can connect up to by PC, add or delete podcasts using any file manager, and still resume with the podcast I previously started.
I'm not an MP3 "power user" if you will, in that I haven't taken the time to figure out playlists and some of the other options. The way I work it works for me.

If you haven't looked at this one before here's a link to another post on the site discussing Rockbox. May want to give it a shot. Once I got used to it I really like it.
