Living Room / Help the Animals
« on: June 10, 2012, 08:38 AM »
Greetings
Our local Humane Society (which is a no kill shelter) is part of a charitable organization contest to win a new vehicle from Toyota. The contest is decided based on whichever organization gets the most votes. So... If any one has a FaceBook account, and likes animals ... :) ... Please click here and vote for the Humane Society of Marion County.

Note: The voting for them can only be done today (June 10th).

Thank You,

Living Room / Lost my father
« on: June 06, 2012, 08:32 AM »
Greetings
In the interest of simplicity as I've been remiss in responding to various correspondence I thought I'd simply post here what has been occupying most of my time. After battling with Alzheimer's for the last 3 years my father went into the final stage downward spiral in the last few months. He died in his sleep around noon Monday.

My apologies for not getting back to folks about various issues.

Thank you,

Stoic Joker

Living Room / Could someone convert a .png into an .ico for me?
« on: February 09, 2012, 06:47 PM »
Okay granted I should be able to do this, but my current icon software will only do 128x128 max...and (I don't have time to find/pick another icon app) for once I'm trying to get/use a high res (512x512) icon image. So could someone please convert this 512x512 image into an icon for me??

...And the weird part is that I'll be using this in a business management application I'm writing for the office (yes they wonder WTF is wrong with me too... ;)).

Living Room / .Free domain names are free? What is catch?
« on: January 20, 2012, 06:49 PM »
Not sure what this is all about - just heard about it today - but they appear to be preregistering .free domain names. For free. I'm assuming there must be a catch...but none is obvious at this point (to me). I joined...perhaps foolishly...and no apparent evil manifested immediately.

Anybody heard anything about this??

Living Room / Can U Say Crap-O-Riffic??
« on: January 07, 2012, 01:58 PM »
So I was planning on trying something new in the way of a development project. This required installing an updated SDK and a few other add-ons for MSVS2008 which I've been using since I got bit by the lack of DPIAware support in MSVS2005 a while back. Simple enough... Right? No.

First I decided to try winging the VS08 SDK7 integration, because I didn't notice the tool for that/was in a hurry/have gotten away with this sort of behavior in the past. This of course went badly... Very badly... *Sigh*

So I uninstall MSVS2005 Pro, MSVS2008 Pro, and MSVS 2010 Pro in their entirety ... To make sure I've no remnants of the muckings about I'd made of them earlier. This is close to 20GB of drive i/o because I also had all three copies of the MSDN Library installed (one for each). But that shouldn't be a problem... Right? Wrong.

The uninstall went fine, the reinstall however got as far as doing the service packs and updates for 2008, before one of the "Sanity Check" reboots I did started to take a bit longer than usual... During POST.

Click...

Click...

Click...

Shit.

2 outta 3 ain't bad :D Is not what I wanted to hear from the RAID controller. But I was rather expecting it after the POST's rather odd almost 3 minute preamble. However, at least with RAID 5, 2 outta 3 really isn't that bad ... Assuming I could get a replacement installed in a timely (NOW!!!) fashion.

I went to Staples, and they had nothing.

I went to Office Depot, and they had nothing.

I went to Radio Shack (hay it was there), and they had nothing.

At this point I'm weighing the odds in my head between ordering something...and 40hz's commentary in other threads about the tendency of drives to occasionally blow in sets. So...

I went to BestBuy (which I hate) and they had 1 320GB WD blue drive in the whole friggin store. I wanted black. But I was out of options...and at least it wasn't green. I hate the green ones - they're not ripe yet... - Prius' are green e.g. green means slow. God awful slow. There is nothing I hate more than slow.

I'm now waiting to see if/how well the RAID rebuild will go:

RAID5 Rebuild.jpg

Yes port 2 is the new arrival ... They used to all match.

I don't have an ending for this, so I'll just take a small bow. <-George Carlin)

Developer's Corner / How do I Start a Ribbon Project?
« on: December 30, 2011, 01:32 PM »
Okay, first of all, yes ... I have lost my mind.

I'm thinking/debating/toying with starting a project based on the Ribbon UI style interface. However... Historically I have always worked in straight WinAPI C++ (with a little pure C). So I've not a friggin clue how to even start a project based on the newer code forms.

Note: The project in question will be for integrating several disparate internal systems into one concise interface to speed up access to all of the relevant business data for the staff (e.g. I'm looking at having to do a complete rewrite of everything from scratch).

So... What am I looking at starting with, a Forms based application, .NET, MVVM? It's an insanely huge project, so if I gotta learn something new on the fly ... I really want/need to get the maximum bang outta whatever I jump into. Only "condition is that I'll be using MSVS of what ever version is/would be best ... which is (i guess) the other question; do I need to move to MSVS2010, or will 2008 do...for creating a (MS native code) Ribbon based UI for the application framework.

Side Notes:
Tablets are getting popular at the office, so I'm looking to do something "Finger Friendly".
There may be a limited access web interface involved (IU consistency issue).
This is a Window Only Environment.

Living Room / Tis the Season, to Spam
« on: December 07, 2011, 07:04 PM »
I intentionally run an unfiltered mail server so I can soo what kind of nonsense is frolicking around out there in the wild. This makes support calls much simpler because I can simply ask if the user has received any mail purporting to be from ___ ... and know based on their response roughly what the extent of the damage is. Every now and then I get one that I truly find amusing for various reasons. I just received this one:
Code: Text [Select]
  1. Los Angeles — Department of Motor Vehicles
  2. TRAFFIC TICKET
  3. POLICE AGENCY
  4. THE PERSON CHARGED AS FOLLOWS
  5.

  8. Date of Offense: 29/11/2011
  9.
  10. Description:

Now skipping past the obvious issues like I've never been to LA, the DMV is a state agency, and Los Angeles is not a state, and that the DMV doesn't write traffic tickets... I rather enjoyed the infractions description for it's complete inability to make any sense what-so-ever:

The (completely) UnNamed Person Charged as Follows - Well if they haven't figured out my name yet I'm sure as hell not going to volunteer it.

Speed Over 90 Zone - Really??

In the 30 plus years I've been driving I've never in my life seen a 90mph speed zone - However if I had I'd have assuredly exceeded it by a fair percentage.

Is it trying to say I was traveling 90mph in excess of the posted speed limit? ...Now that's more like it (its happened before), however if I was indeed traveling that fast there's very little chance of my stopped to "discuss" it... :)

Strangely (according to the header) this was apparently replied to by (the nonexistant) support@mydomain - Which of course doesn't exist. Now wouldn't you thing it would make more sense to spoof a goverment address to add a bit of validity to this sham??

And of course, WTF is the checksum supposed to be for? Are long string of random characters supposed to scare people or something?

I may actually have to start a favorite spam collection, just so I can put this in it.

Living Room / I Remember...
« on: December 07, 2011, 04:01 PM »
I remember when it used to be considered a common courtesy to tell someone that they'd left their lights on. This prevented them from being stranded later with a dead battery. Now no one does that for fear of looking foolish because most cars have the light on a timer.

I actually just went through this mental exercise in the parking lot, and thought what else have we lost due to technology and the times we live it?

Anybody else remember this one, or something like it?

Living Room / Need Advice on a TV...
« on: November 19, 2011, 11:25 AM »
Greetings
While historically I have stayed as far away from the multimedia stuff (focused on business systems), the wife is pondering a new TV. Which means I need to ponder a new TV also. Given the amount of new technologies that are now involved in TVs, I'm ...(due to avoiding the multimedia stuff)... basically in the dumber than a box of shit category.  :)

So... I think that the LEDs are ahead of (better than?) the LCD, but haven't a clue where Plasma fits into the mix. I'm assuming that since we buy a TV once every decade (or so...), that now would be the time to get something "Internet Enabled" which brings up the whole (media-tastic) DLNA capability/compatibility/? ... That I'm about to drop myself into the middle of.

Can anyone give me a thumbnail sketch of what I should be looking for/avoiding/trying to make sure is/isn't there/missing, etc.

Thank you,

Spastic Joker

General Software Discussion / Need replacement for MS Uptime.exe
« on: November 15, 2011, 06:01 PM »
Greetings
For many years one of my favorite utilities has been the incredibly brilliant and tiny MS Uptime.exe. It will give the current uptime of either LM, or any machine on the network. It will also dump the event logs (local or remote) of all the shutdown/reboot/BSOD & boot events which made creating a (up)timeline a snap for troubleshooting.

But... It was written back in 1999, and is (for whatever reason) no longer reliable. It tends to crash when trying to get a list of when/why the (local or remote) machine was rebooted.

Here is a sample of it output (run locally):

MS-Uptime.jpg

Lacking the time to scratch write it myself, I was hoping someone knew of a comparable alternative that was currently available (that works). CLI is preferable, but I'll suffer through a GUI if I have to.

General Software Discussion / Product Key Finder (Excellent & Free)
« on: October 27, 2011, 06:04 PM »
So a client's machine decided to get flakey and need to be replaced. ...And unfortunately the pricy network management suite we use decided it didn't want to collect the Acrobat X product key for said machine in the software audit logs (like its supposed to...). Which left me with a stack of COA cards and no clue which one went with dead machine X.

*Joy*...

Then I found this little jewel: Product Key Finder. It's a portable 64kb life saver that will pull the product keys out of the registry for damn near anything (Best I can tell) in about a second. Well worth having on a ThumbDrive, and a new favorite on mine.

General Software Discussion / Windows H8 - On Physical Hardware
« on: October 27, 2011, 11:39 AM »
So I finally got a spare 8 seconds with which to try and collect my whits. Which is when it occured to me that we have had a batch of HP TouchSmart PC sitting in the corner of my office for months that I'd completely forgotten about.

So... De-box One HP Pavilion (310-1124F) TouchSmart PC - It's an All-In-One with a touch screen that will tip back ~45deg. Flattened it, and install Windows 8 DP x64 on it.

AMD Athlon II X2 240e (2.80GHz) Processor.
4GB Ram
And a 22" Touch Screen.
HDD was/is large enough, there, and mechanical (SATA) ... I don't feel like walking over there again to check the size. :)

Setup was basically just like Win7 for the most part, and then went into a first boot/OOBE wizard that was actually kind of nice. Logon with live ID or local account, and an accept all defaults an get on with it option. So you don't have to troll through the whole stupid wizard (this I like).

From off to login screen was 23 seconds. Which to be honest was actually 20 seconds + 3 more seconds for me to figure out what the hell was happening with the you gotta swipe up to view the logon.

Logon to desktop was another (about) 10 seconds.

Navigation of Metro was ... Agonizing. Mainly because I kept wanting to close things when I was done with them ... And you can't do that.

The Metro/IE10 UI makes perfect sense on my phone ...(kinda)... and is mind blowingly annoying on a desktop. I hate full screen anything. Put it in a window where it belongs so I can monitor other things running on my desktop at the same time.

Task manager is a bit totally friggin weird, but I kinda like it. ...Mainly because it was the only thing on the desktop that I recognized.

Developer's Corner / SEO fun: Does the multi-domain tactic work?
« on: October 12, 2011, 02:41 PM »
So the brass wants to grab some more domain names to try to increase the chances of our site coming up in various searches. I'm on the fence... I know this was a popular tactic once ... But does it still work?

I'm thinking going for 5-6 content relevant names might be worth it. But saturation bombing with a laundry list would just be bad/foolish/backfire, or just waste money.

Thoughts?

66
Okay, first off yes it's a client machine ... I haven't lost my mind. :)

Google search results all seem to point to one password recovery tool, but there are more that a few things about it that just don't feel right.

It says it "portable", but comes (only) with a setup program.

It claims to have a command line version ... Which I'll be damned if I can find.

 - But seeing that the client's machine is already infected seven ways to Sunday... I figured what the hell and set it off anyhow -

The "Portable" setup claimed to be downloading something during the install. It claimed that it downloaded some-damn-thing.exe on port 53??? successfully. Even though the machine was running off-Wire, and in Safe Mode.

Now knowing the owner of said machine quite well, I do believe that the PW it claims to have recovered is legit ... But none the less, I find the apps behavior quite troubling.

So has anyone else seen/used/heard of this widget??

Living Room / Centurylink is on CracK
« on: August 28, 2011, 02:25 PM »
So Friday night I get home from work, with a fully loaded to-do list of client updates only to find out that my internet connection is down.

Why was it down? Well, because CenturyLink (my ISP's current name) is on CracK. They had an unrequested/announced/wanted/needed update to do, and they plowed through the list of folks using 3rd party contractors that obviously know less about telco that my friggin dog does.

When the neighbors saw the black SUV, with out-of-state plates, magnetic signs, and a scruffy ragamuffin with shabby, baggy clothes, and his hat on back-wards prowling about our house. They ended up having a lengthy debate about strolling over to shoot his silly ass. I like my neighbors...

CenturyLink's "Tech Support", is the most pathetic bunch of Flowchart Reading Morons I have ever had the misfortune to be stuck on the phone with.

They new nothing of the system-wide update that was going on.
They completely ignored the information I gave them about the "Service Vehicle" that was there.
They made no attempt to even check if the line was active.
They insisted on resetting my router, even though the issue had nothing to do with the part of the config that gets reset.
They were incapable of grasping the incredibly basic concept of I've already tried a different router (I keep several spares) which -duplicating the results (x3...)- crystal clearly proves that there is nothing wrong with the fucking router.

After pissing an entire hour down the drain, I finally get kicked up to an "engineer" who after keeping me on hold for yet another half an hour ... admitted that:

There was an existing work order for my line...
They couldn't "see" me either. Even with the low level protocol tests that are supposed to identify my NID.

Well...Welcome to the land of Duh!!!

They offered to get someone out there sometime between 8am and 5pm the next day (Saturday). Great... Way to narrow it down. Now I get to sit here with my thumb up my ass all freaking day waiting for who knows what.

Thankfully the guys that showed up (at damn near 5...) were actually good at what they did. They were also quite helpful. And fought tooth and nail with the idiots at the main office who wanted to put it off until Monday...Because some paperwork hadn't quite cleared yet. Paperwork?!? Oh hell no...

The pair I'm on was not connected to anything at the CO. Hm... and that didn't throw up a flag why??

They had to give me a new IP Address, because apparently they'd misplaced mine (And nobody there is apparently capable of understanding WTF STATIC Means...).

The first new IP Address they gave me wasn't even in the same range, as the hardware I was connected to... (e.g. it worked, not.)

An hour and a half later, the tech finally managed to wrangle an IP that would actually work out of someone at the main office. But this was only after he at one point, point blank told the brain dead drone on the other end of the line that he was in fear of his life if he tried to leave the location with the connection still down. Now mind you I'd made no threats of any kind. He was simply doing whatever he had to to get a proper reaction out of the dead space on the other end of the line. And is seems that it does indeed truly require a confirm-able life & death emergency to get one of these dip-shits up off there lazy retarded asses to go find a god damn supervisor.

So... If anyone is ever wondering why I have such a "harsh" attitude towards large corporations... (see above) :D

The two guys that came to the house Saturday, deserve a raise. The rest of the company should be immediately sterilized in defense of the gene pool.

General Software Discussion / ColorSchemer ColorPix
« on: August 17, 2011, 10:36 PM »
Ever have something you needed to get the exact color of? Well here's a little app I just found that does exactly that. And it does it quite well.

From the site
ColorPix is a useful little color picker that grabs the pixel under your mouse and transforms it into a number of different color formats.

You can use the built-in magnifier to zoom in on your screen, click on a color value to copy it directly to the clipboard, and even keep ColorPix on top of all other apps and out of the way.

Best of all, there's nothing to install - just download the tiny app and off you go. So grab it now, it's FREE!

http://www.colorsche...om/colorpix_info.php

It just got me out of a jam ... May-haps it'll help you too.

Description
Got Space? is a small simple portable utility that will list the available drives and the space available on them. It's actually a clone of another program I've been using for years which has never been updated and lacks some of the features that I'll be adding to Got Space? Because I need them.

Features
Automatic Autoscaling between KB, MB, & GB - Because 0.2GB isn't really helpful if you need a place to stick a 235MB file quickly.
Quota Detection - Because when quotas are enabled you need to know how much space is available to you, not the system.
Auto Refresh (Optional/off by default) - Adjustable between 3 - 300 seconds
Detects SUBST command drives and displays them, but does not add them to the drive space totals.

Drive Types Displayed is user adjustable.
Drive Types Totaled is user adjustable.
User Configured Settings can be stored in one of 3 places:
Memory - Allows you to test a configuration for the current session only.
      GotSpace.ini
Registry  - Will override (but not overwrite) .ini settings.

Hotkeys available:
   F5 manual refresh
   F8 Show Settings dialog

Window size, position, and column widths can all be saved independently of each-other. So if you like a certain window size and column width layout, but don't want to commit to a specific window position (frequent portable app issue) ... Just deselect the options you don't want to save.

Added a StatusBar with a timestamp for the last time GotSpace? was updated. ...No, I can't seem to code anything without putting a god damn clock in it. *Sigh*

Program window can (/does by default) automatically resize itself to display all detected drives without scrolling.

Drives can now be independently hidden by drive letter(s).

Color coding - Drives with less that 10% free space turn red, & drives with 100% free space turn green.

High (green) and low (red) points are now adjustable.

Planned Features
Open for Suggestions.

Developer's Corner / [Solved] SQL Query is Kicking my Ass.
« on: July 04, 2011, 09:18 AM »
Greetings
So when the boss first asked me about doing this report it sounded simple enough. But after 4 days of hammering on it I've come to the conclusion that my initial assessment may have been (dead) wrong. I'm going to try to be both detailed and succinct ... So please bear with me if this gets a bit long.

One of our internal billing systems contains historical information (Client, serial#, date, pages printed, etc.) about printers that are under contract. Circumstances being what they are (IT Happens), occasionally there are devices that don't get their counts collected. Now usually this gets caught up at a later date ... but some times certain devices slide long enough to start raising eyebrows as to their existence and condition. Which brings "us" to the report in question.

I'm trying to create a SQL query (for a MySQL db) that will list all the devices for client X that:
1. Does not recently/currently have a billable count (Total Pages Printed = 0).
2. Shows the date of the last billable count (or the first zero count date in a contiguous historical block between then and now).

Sound simple enough? Hopefully it is for some one here ... 'cause I'm getting my ass kicked by this thing. The relevant table structure and usage is as follows:

Columns:
Index - auto incremented (int).
SerialNo - of the device (string).
ModelName - of the device (string).
ClientID - Internal identified of customer (string).
TimeStamp - a.k.a. billing date / all devices for a given customer/date will have an identical time stamp (timestamp).
TotalPP - Total Pages Printed this will reflect the number of pages printed by that device for that billing cycle (int).

I've got close to 9 pages of failed queries and notes on what doesn't work. Nested selects tend to make the server race and die (neat trick with dual Xeons), so I've been concentrating on various self-join variations. But nothing is giving me a resultant data set that isn't either wrong or total garbage.

So I'm hoping to find a more informed opinion on how to approach this.

Thank you,
Slightly frazzled but still vaguely Stoic Joker

Developer's Corner / To ASPX, or Not To ASPX...
« on: May 25, 2011, 06:04 PM »
Greetings
So the boss dropped by my office today to drop another (great idea) project in my lap. Which is basically a Quick-N-Dirty Shopping Cart type of affair. It will be publicly facing for (a specific) client access, but all orders will be processed internally through a single PO (e.g. No PCI is involved, needed, to be planned for). This is going to be strictly User Table -> Authentication Mechanism -> Product Table -> (and ephemeral) Order List "Cart".

Now... (here's the weird part)... I'm debating on what to code it in, and speed is a factor (a huge one). ASP sucks, and PHP requires a bit too much pain staking care (considering I do it with a plain text editor) to meet the deadline. So I'm debating on taking the ASPX route because I can then speed things up using MSVS to hand the thing together quickly. The obvious downside being that I've never used it for that.

I did however find a rather handy tutorial that I played with for most of this afternoon. It seem to do a fairly nice job of taking you from Hello World! ... All the way to the edge of the cliff... :) Which basically makes the question should I proceed in that direction? And if I do is VS2005 a good enough way to get there? Or should I jump to one of the newer ones (VS2008/2010) to avoid something that'll byte me in the ass down the road (or just screw me outa the gate)?

Note: Ducking the project was also presented as an option...But I'm not that smart... ;)

Thank you,
Stoic Joker

P.S. I'm also not adverse to starting with a sample code project, if anyone knows of a good one.

Okay, so a client sends me a Word document (.docx) that has some spelling errors in it that Spell Check isn't finding. The errors are reasonably obvious and don't result in the creation of another different/shorter word. They are indeed, wrong. But completely undetected.

To eliminate anything application instance or document related I copied just the one word to a new Word document...And Spell Check ignored that one too. Here's a screen-shot to save time and typing:
Bad Word.jpg

Pressing F7 (force full check) still misses the same bad word. Ignore word X only lasts - or is only supposed to last - until the line it's on changes...But that is not the case here. So I added a bit more garbage text to better dramatize the issue:
Bad Word2.jpg

...So, does anybody have any idea how the hell that happened?

Living Room / Force USB Drives to use Drive Letter X
« on: May 20, 2011, 02:13 PM »
Okay - 5 minute job...that's been going on for a few weeks now.

The tape drive died (they do that), and it was cheaper to buy 5 500GB USB drives than it would be to replace the tape drive. So... I got these 5 USB drives...And I need them to all be drive Z: when they're plugged in (one at a time of course) so that the backup software can find them consistantly...Without needing constant fiddling with.

Now here's the funny part. I've done this before. So I know it will work. I just can't remember how the :) I did it.

The obvious answer of using the disk management console, doesn't work. When the drives are swapped, the drive letter assignment goes missing. Now. IIRC...(Ha!)...There was a registry hack - may have been cmd or vbs scripted - that resulted in all drives happily using the same drive letter (when~attached~one~at~a~time...). I just can't bloody find the friggin thing (again), and apparently I forgot to save it back when.

All I can find now is a constant stream of TS drones regurgitating the (wrong) use DMC answer.

Ring any bells anybody?

Living Room / SEO Say What?!?
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:54 PM »
Okay... So I was going through me spam the other day and ran across one I really couldn't get my head around. So I thought I'd share it:
Dear Webmaster,

I came across your website http://www.stoicjoker.com and found it relevant with our industry. I feel that exchanging links would be a beneficial option for both of us. After getting your response I will add your information in the best category on the resource page here Some Roofing Company in Arizona...com/resources/index.html. If you are interested, please post the following information on your website:

Title: Arizona Roofing
Description: If you are in need of Arizona roofing, please give the experts over at [Removed] a call today.
URL: [removed]

I appreciate your attention and wish you great online business.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Now what possible part of my site could they have "found it relevant with our industry"? Is this some new trend, trick, trap, or just SEOs Gone Wild?

Living Room / Apple Gets a Bugg of its very own :)
« on: May 12, 2011, 06:53 PM »
So I ran across this and just had to laugh, as it seems that some enterprising soul has ported a ScareWare hijack over to OSX (I've been giggling for days).

Intego warns of rare Mac scareware
and
Mac OS X crimeware kit found on underground forums

The 2nd one referrs to this particular little bugg as (Think Different...) "CrimeWare" (HA!) As if Just because its infesting a Mac it's suddenly a crime?!? Perhaps Buggering a Virgin is supposed to be worse or something *Shrug* But snApple ain't no virgin.
