I've used PDF XChange Editor for many years, but recently I got to also install Acrobat Pro, so I made it my default app, to try it out. I found I much prefer PDF XChange Editor.
Did you buy a pro version of PDF XChange Editor? I have a free version, and as far as I can tell, it can't do things like combine several pdf pages into one pdf file.  Can yours do that?  A friend keeps suggesting that I simply break down and buy Adobe Acrobat Pro. He claims it will do everything. I'm not a big Adobe fan, so I'd prefer to use alternatives, as long as I can do what I want. But for combining files, I wound up sending all the separate pdfs to him and he combined them with Adobe.  :(

I am not an Adobe fan either.  Too much bloat and its hard for me to use when there are other solutions that are easier and cost much less, if not free.

We do receive pdfs that need editing.  Also there are some that are needing a signature and then returned via email to sender.

As I understand it, my administrator wants something that can create and edit our own documents.  She also would like to be able to edit other pdfs as well as place a signature on them.  As far as placing images on them, I do not know if she would do that or not.

She does post some pdfs on the web.

One of my administrators asked me to look into getting her a software that can do this.  Of course, Acrobat was the first thing that came to my mind.

+1.

The only advantage I could find of Acrobat is that it seems to open files faster (or at least the app launches faster when you open the first file). But otherwise XChange is so much more user-friendly and customisable.

You mean there is an Adobe product that opens fast?  InDesign and Photoshop CS6 sure don't.

My school is wanting to purchase Adobe Acrobat Pro.  They will only use it for creating, editing, and signing pdfs.  Is Acrobat the best piece of software for our needs?

Will probably only have 1 user at a time but would need more than 1 license and less than 5.  Windows version mostly with maybe 1 Mac,

I have looked at Foxit, Nitro, and some others.  With our Adobe educational pricing, their website pricing is not any cheaper than Adobe is.

I am not a chrome browser fan but it does do a good job getting rid of the ads and banners when I want to print something.

Sorry guys, I thought I had already responded to this thread.

I did end up getting it to work on win 7, haven't tried it on win 10.  I changed the usb cable out with another one(new I believe) and it started working.

thanks for all the help and tips.

Living Room / computer not recognizing scanner
« on: November 02, 2016, 08:35 PM »
I have a Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner that I cannot get the computer to recognize.  I have tried it on 3 different model of computers, 2 different USB cable and all I get is "Unknown Device".  I have tried different USB ports too.
I have tried different OSs, win 7 and 10 64 bit.  It was working on a win 10 computer that was upgraded from Win 7.  But unfortunately that computer bit the dust.

I have downloaded the latest drivers from the Epson site and also have used the Cd that came with the scanner.

We also have a Epson Perefection V600 Photo Scanner with the same issues.

I can plug other USB devices like a mouse and it works fine.

any ideas?

my hat's off to you Mouser for doing the newsletter.  I figured it would take longer than 1 day to make it happen.

is the newsletter actually needed?  I mean is it something people have requested?

just wondering.

You might try these uninstall instructions from JAVA.com

Or download the Java uninstaller Here

while looking for a program that will stop ransomware from doing its dirtywork.  Or at least notify when it does find something.  I stumbled across this program CryptoMonitor

Has anyone used this or a similar program?

thanks

Well, I thought so but wasn't sure about the tongue in cheek.  Still I felt the need to respond.

Thank you so much for not flaming me.  That's one of the things I like about this forum.  Most of the time, things are pretty calm.  But one thing is for sure, the help I have received over the years has been great!

As Curt said, "move thread to basement (board)"

I believe the world as God made it has stayed the same since major events like Creation and the Flood.  Mankind has made most of the changes "trying to improve the world."  Looks like they have made a mess of things. No free updates from God are necessary.

Living Room / sort and filter
« on: January 14, 2016, 09:51 AM »
I am looking for a way to sort and filter items in a spreadsheet or maybe in a database.  What I am wanting to do is keep track of songs sung in church, how many times it was sung and what date(s) they were sung.  I will have a date in a row with the songs under it.  Then 7 days later will be another list of songs under the date.  Maybe something like this:

Jan 1
song a
song b
song c
jan8
song a
song d
song e
song c
and so on

now I can do this in a pivot table function in Excel 2010.  But I do not know how to keep jan1 and jan8 from showing.  Then I would have to delete those rows.

I am not familiar with databases at all.  I am looking for suggestions how I can make this work easliy.

Ideas?

General Software Discussion / Re: restart switch
« on: December 21, 2015, 07:03 AM »
In some places I will have as many as 4 switches plugged into the UPS.  certainly not ideal, but the building was wired long before I went onboard.

The battery backups are there to protect them from power flickers and short power outages.  Most of the time, the power is out 1 to 2 hours.  Occasionally, which is not very often, the switches will need to be restarted after such an event.  While these switches are not 100% smart switches yet they are not dumb switches either.  They do take a little longer to boot than my totally dumb switches do.

the power situation with the electric company has improved but it is not where I would like for it to be.  Cannot do much about that.

They are Netgear Business Switches.  JGS524 and JGS524PE. These switches

not sure I understand you skwire.  but that's ok.  4wd, I hadn't thought of the low tech solutions, but that will be hard to do when they are plugged into a battery backup.

I do not have to restart them real often but they are scattered through out the building and didn't want to walk all over.  Some are quite high on the wall as well.

Is it possible to restart multiple IP network switches at once or by schedule?

Yes, I can restart them one by one using the web browser but that is time consuming.

Not having much luck searching Google.

open for suggestions?  Possible to do with coding snack?
