Circle Dock / Variable depth hotkeys and keyboard control
« on: October 29, 2008, 05:19 PM »
Two thoughts that I had recently that might be applied to future releases:

1) The ability to set multiple hotkeys so that, for example, mousebuttonX1 opens up the lowest level of CD, while mousebuttonX2 goes directly into one of the dock folders. This might have been brought up before.

2) Keyboard control: Call it up with a hotkey, highlights show which icon is selected, arrow keys (or maybe asdf, or some other new scheme) to move the selection, spacebar or enter to select an icon or dock folder, escape to hide the dock if you didn't choose anything. I feel like this could be as awesome as using it just with your mouse. I guess this would require some different method of deciding the location of appearance (center of the main screen or a user decided location), but other than that I feel like it would be another highly intuitive way for CD to be used. This would also open the application up to those people who love controlling everything from just their keyboards.

Any thoughts?

Circle Dock / small bug
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:00 PM »
If I am in a dock folder and I try to change the icon of that folder (i.e. currently the center icon), then the center icon of the lowest level screen is changed and the icon that links to said dock folder is not.

Thought you'd like to know.

Can't wait until Alpha 9!

The middle button works fine. It's just X1/X2 that don't.

I am having issues with the XButton 1/2 fix. While I did previously have the bug mentioned (lack of differentiation), I am now unable to use either button to call CD. Is anyone else having this issue?

And btw, those planet icons are awesome.

Circle Dock / Re: Circle Dock Enhancements

However personal I think a great addition wold be if it is possible to execute a serie (batch) of programs by clicking on a icon. Currently I'm using this feature in the Docklet application ProgramLaunch which is also nice. Clicking on the item will then start a couple of applications (or open directories) which were placed in a batch.
Would it not have the same effect if you placed the programs you want to launch in a Windows .bat or .vbs script file?

I've been using this in conjunction with CD for a while already (specifically as a .bat file) and it works like a charm --  ultra convenient :)

For those who don't know of this but would like to check it out...

Circle Dock / Re: about locking dock items
« on: September 30, 2008, 07:53 AM »
I've noticed this problem, too. I think it happens specifically when you drag an icon over the center button.

Also, on a related note, a possible change to the program: a setting that freezes all icons at their locations? i.e. they cannot be dragged to different spots. As it is, if I try to click something while my mouse is on the move the icon gets dragged a bit (it resets) and whatever I wanted to open doesn't get opened. Would it be possible to add a setting that would fix the dragging issue?

Circle Dock / Re: Big Thank you and some minor contribution

I know, it's not really something that should bother you, but do you think there would be a way to make CircleDock work with Virtual Desktop Applications like DexPot?
Right now, the situation is as follows:
You are on say the second (virtual) desktop and want CircleDock to appear. You push the according buttons and it does appear. On the first (real) desktop though. No you can juggle windows between various desktops and so can you do with circle dock, the only problem being that only the selected part gets thrown to the other desktop, as in you klick on the ring and hit the keys to move it to desktop 2 and indeed it goes there. It's just that the buttons and items stay on the first desktop.

that's kind of interesting actually. I use VirtuaWin for my virtual desktops, and i don't have any problems. The dock appears on whichever desktop I am currently on. And say I'm on desktop 1, and CD is open, then I switch to desktop 2, CD is on that one also. VirtuaWin seems to do that with some other programs, too (particularly: steam). I'm not sure what that means in terms of changing CD to work with DexPot, though.

Circle Dock / Re: Elliptical Circle Dock Works!
« on: September 26, 2008, 08:25 AM »
I have to say that the rotation animation looks pretty darn cool in ellipse form. Also, the ellipse form makes a great perma-dock at the top of my screen for a few shortcuts (only half the ellipse is visible, and it much more economic with space than the same thing in circular form). This looks great and I can't wait until Alpha 9! Thanks for the preview version

One question though, which I think becomes even more relevant with the ellipse situation: would it be possible to have a different number of total possible items for each successive radius? Say if you have two circles/ellipses on the lowest level, then you'd be able to set 10 items for the first one and 15 for the outer one (just an example). Just putting it out there, since I feel that especially with the ellipses a number that is good for an inner one would make an outer one rather sparsely populated.

Awesome! Any chance that it will be included in another pre-Alpha9 "minor update"? (pretty please! )

Another issue, though I'm not sure if this is workable to get around: if I have the taskbar set on auto-hide, then whenever I click the center button to call the start menu, CD seems to have to wait for the taskbar to slide back into view. This makes it take about a second to appear, and in fact sometimes does not even work (the taskbar will unhide, but no start menu will appear) unless I have made the regular start menu appear recently. Any idea if there is a fix for either of these issues?

Thanks for the ellipse equation. I think I'm just going to program in the ellipse function for fun and see how it looks. Now that I think about it, I don't think it's possible to express the equation of an ellipse as just a function of one variable so I'll use the equation you gave. The one thing I'm concerned about is that the icons may bunch up at the pointed ends of the ellipse but I'll see how it looks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipse, this is a decent article with several equations that describe the ellipse. At the end there is also some JavaScript code for drawing an ellipse, which may or may not be useful for you. It looks like it is possible to express an ellipse as a function of one variable if you mean to have something like the radius being a function of the angle. However, this won't be the case if you want to have the "center" of the dock at the center of the ellipse: it would have to be made in reference to one of the foci.

Thanks for the great update! I've set up a second dock as my permadock and am loving it. Thanks for including that change in the update! All the improvements are great.

i've found a bug though: when the opacity of the center button is set as a low value, but then you click the center button to bring up the start menu, the center button loses all transparency on-screen. In the settings the value does not change. If you fiddle with the opacity slider the center button corrects itself again. However, this is kind of annoying since I have the opacity set to 1 on one of my docks so that I don't see the center button but can still bring up the start menu.

Also, I was wondering if you still had any plans on allowing an elliptical form for the dock (say, in Alpha 9). It would be cool to have the permadock a bit elongated so it does not penetrate towards the center of the window too much.

Again, great job with the update

Circle Dock / Re: [Suggestion] Task Manager
« on: September 11, 2008, 12:14 PM »
Regarding this topic, I thought I might direct you to a post on Lifehacker.com: Lifehacker post

It shows you ways to make shortcuts to lots of different windows things, such as the task manager, power options (shut down, restart, lock, hibernate), screensaver toggling, volume mute, etc. I've made shortcuts for the first two (task manager + all power options) (I don't really want/need the other). In any case, what I do is keep a folder that holds lots of shortcuts specifically to be used within CD. This way all of them are consolidated (i.e. security from accidental deletion or movement) and I'll always know where all my program links are. The system works just fine with CD.

Perhaps you still want to have the task manager link natively supported in CD but this could be a temporary (or permanent) solution to that problem.

Right now, Circle Dock will only allow you to run one instance of the program per computer even if you have separate folders with copies of Circle Dock. I purposely did this for 0.9.2 because I was afraid people were going to try to run multiple copies of Circle Dock from the same folder, which can work but then when you change some settings or add some icons, then things wouldn't save properly. It was just a way to try and make launching the program fool proof.

However, I do want to allow launching multiple instances of the program from separate folders. There is just one line of code I have to change that would allow this. Circle Dock 0.9.1 already allowed you to run multiple instances from separate folders. Perhaps I should just allow this for Alpha 8?

I see your reasons for not allowing it. The reason I bring it up is that I think it would be useful to to have one "permanent" (perhaps immovable) dock somewhere on the screen and one callable dock as well. I've found CD incredibly useful as a callable dock, and have made it a permanent addition to the way I use my computer, but there are often times when I think that the combination mentioned above would end up being even more time-efficient, and I think being able to have a second CD instance for the permanent fixture would be an elegant way of doing it.

Come to think of it, would it be possible to include in a future release a setting that renders the dock immovable?

Question...any chance that, somewhere in the future multiple, independent (i.e. with different icons/links/etc) instances of the program could run at the same time?

(Or should I just do this by having two different CD folders in different locations under different names?)

I just downloaded this and like it a lot, but have an idea. I don't know how many people here use Samurize on their desktop, but I feel like this would be an incredibly awesome Samurize config where you can see how you're doing as well as add/subtract some points directly from your desktop without opening the main window (which you would call up when you want to configure the program or perhaps add/subtract points with more rarely used things). I don't think an equivalent thing for Samurize exists, but I'm not sure how difficult of a program it would be.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if this would be considered a bug, but I was playing with the settings and it turns out that if the center button's opacity is set to 0, you can't move circle dock or access the start menu (if that setting is on). Putting the opacity at 1 (or even 10) renders it nearly invisible anyway, but fixing it or having a "clear" icon might be good for those who don't want anything in the center.

Circle Dock / Re: Circle Dock 0.9.2 Alpha 7 Discussion

Wow, you are right. I'll fix it or swap it out with another hotkey component. I'll get an update as soon as possible. For now, just check all the Ctrl, Alt, Shift, and Win boxes if you want "None". This will sort of simulate a "None" condition since I don't think you would be pressing down all those keys at once.

Yeah, I had just set it to F24 (F13-24 don't exist on my keyboard).

Also, I was wondering if it were possible to expand the mouse-toggling options for mice with additional buttons. I have more buttons than I need outside of video games (7), so that would be nice to free up the middle mouse button for scrolling and tab-opening. There are a couple external workarounds, but if CD could natively support it that would be nice.

One other random idea (building off of the last post + from playing Crysis)...Perhaps in the future you could add the ability for two menues: one when you click the middle mouse button (or equivalently tap the hotkey), a second that pops up when you hold it down for a full second or so (perhaps make that time-length configurable). Maybe model the second menu after the one in Crysis, where it goes away when you stop holding it, except it'll fade back to the first menu or something. This might be a bit complex, but I think there might be some value in it as an add-on long in the future.

I've got a problem: when I set the keyboard hotkey to none, 0 becomes a hotkey and is rendered useless for general typing (I can use the 0 button in the numpad, but not the number row).

First off I want to say that I loved this program when I first found the old version, and I just wish I'd had the coding skills to contribute in some way. Thanks for such a great idea/program!

I was wondering something kind of random: would it be possible to replace the center button with a live clock? I think that would be a practical and efficient use of space in the dock, but I just don't know how feasible it is.
