i've updated http://www.donationcoder.com/Contests/banner/
to show the new designs..

note: my initial post about formats and filenames was specifying wrong filenames and format for the forum.
i've converted those already sent to me, but future entries should use the formats now shown here:
http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=2802.0

i.e.
in the future the forum images should also be png and named
topbanner_forum.png and sliver_forum.png

welcome, wreklessxx! And thanks for your submission!

We now have quite a bunch submissions to this contest! Now the hard part will be to choose the best one

Just a minor warning:
@qrade: i think there's something in the top of the image you submited. the small black-to-white gradient at the top is not the same in the banner as in the expander. I don't think i explained this well, please look at the top of the banner on the testpage: http://www.donationcoder.com/Contests/banner/qrade1/index.html

Hey wreklessxx - nice job.

A lot of the other submissions have a sort of a white out affect going on. Lots of whie in the color to make it fade in.

The wreklessxx submissions have more of a jewel tone look. It makes the banner pop a little more.

I only mention this becuase I am proud of myself for being able to figure out the differecne. I'm usually color challenged according to my wife

can i just ask, if the new banners follow a completely different colour scheme to the rest of the forum (as it is at the moment), then, will the forum colour layout be changed to match a winning banner that has a novel set of colours?

i.e. are we keeping the colour scheme throughout the forum consistent or doesn't it matter?

i'm trying not to scare the children this time.

I like the one with the talking heads - I think the bubble with the dollar sign in should be a bit smaller, though, and perhaps the dollar sign could be in (parentheses), to show that donation is optional? Just an idea

nudone · « **Reply #135 on:** May 27, 2006, 09:57 PM »

i like the idea about the dollar in parentheses - i was expecting the dollar to be an issue so that's a good way around it.

mouser · « **Reply #136 on:** May 27, 2006, 11:01 PM »

WOW. wow. WOW.

the talking heads ones really feel special to me for some reason..

what about trying a version where the $ is replaced by a heart?

f0dder · « **Reply #137 on:** May 27, 2006, 11:07 PM »

Oooh, I especially like the one with the globe. COMMUNITY!

jgpaiva · « **Reply #138 on:** May 27, 2006, 11:11 PM »

Nice... I like the talking heads. Specially the second one, because it gives a more world-wide look of donationcoder.com.
I also support the $ issue, if it's to be there, it should be "disguised".
I think the way wreklessxx made the cut-out part looks better, though.

Oh... I've just noticed that the first one you submited had cody on the background!!

I wonder how the keys one would look with the 0101 on the background..

lol i had to go back and squint to see that but you are right! sneaky cody!

mouser · « **Reply #141 on:** May 27, 2006, 11:19 PM »

maybe the last person should have cody on a leash behind him

jgpaiva · « **Reply #142 on:** May 27, 2006, 11:21 PM »

Oh... Poor cody, do you think he should be imprisioned?

How about if the last person had cody in the speak ballon? (instead of the $ sign)

mouser · « **Reply #143 on:** May 27, 2006, 11:22 PM »

maybe a heart with a gold coin in it? or just the gold coin? or just the heart?

i might be over-analyzing, but i like how in the first talking heads one, the guy speaking $ is not isolated from the rest. otherwise it feels like too much emphasis on the $. but when he is just one of the others it feels more appropriate.

f0dder · « **Reply #144 on:** May 27, 2006, 11:25 PM »

Perhaps a heart, with Cody inside, eating a gold coin with a dollar sign on it in parens?

updated the test page with all latest banners:

nudone · « **Reply #146 on:** May 28, 2006, 06:17 AM »

thanks all for the great suggestions, i think they are all excellent ideas - i will do a few edits later on today.

(i'd just like to say that i knew the dollar sign was going to become a talking point but i quickly accepted it as i thought of it as donationcoder is place that talks about the value of software - i wasn't thinking that the dollar represented a symbol for donations. i do appreciate that i had to invent that line of thought so it wouldn't really be the first thing that visitors would think of.)

oh dear, i've just checked how the banners work when viewed with the rest of the page content - i see there are some issues with my colours matching across the slivers.

mouser · « **Reply #147 on:** May 28, 2006, 06:26 AM »

i fixed the slivers.

i wonder if it might be possible to make the bottom left inset thing where page title is shown, into a fully "bordered" cutout (like rounded renctangle or elipse), instead of it cutting of the entire bottom left. does that make sense? i mean like still show a tiny amount of the left and bottom border of the banner like th right and top sides show? would that look good?

i think that would look okay if the text that goes inside it had the right amount of white space around it. i'll include it in the edits.
