The work of trimall is not visible, but on my XP the use of RAM is immediate lowered with 10-20%, and in a second trimall will close again, when the job is done. There is nothing to actually see. Please check how much free RAM you have, right before and after clicking trimall, and tell us the result.

The effect may grow if you have very little RAM free. Normally I wouldn't try to free any RAM when there is 26.8% free, but in this case I did it for the picture.

Back to the subject, at least for a short comment:

Some have implied that I have a lot of programs running in the 'TNA' (: system tray), but if I close EVEREST it really isn't that many, I think:

Start by checking the obvious: Control Panel > Sounds & Sound Units ...

It's only the Keyboard Sticky Key Sounds that don't work - all other XP sound is ok. Someone gave me an AHK file but the sticky key sounds still don't work with that! This happened before I got my cordless Key Board/Mouse.

Thanks for the directions guys!
I set up a shortcut to the taskbar and sure enough, it trims the RAM usage.
Next step will be find a way to make it work in "automatic" right?
I loves "manuals" but nowadays you know how it is.

Is this trimall supposed to work on the virtual memory too?

Hi all,

my system tray is as clogged as anyone's but there are two (maybe three) apps I want to have there on my free will:
1. Hyperionics HyperSnap de Luxe (screenshot prog, one of the best I ever used)
2. Hyperionics FileBox Extender (freeware, that gives you instant access to pre-defined folders without going through the directory tree. Same works from almost every file open dialogue out of any application. Gives access to recently opened folders also)
3. Webshots (screensaver prog with access to tons of beautiful pics at no cost and the ability to include your own pics - its the online pics that make it just great)

Some other apps have to be there like anti virus and firewall software. But these three are my favorites to work with.

vm size, "working set" - the amount of memory the process uses that windows will try to keep in memory. This includes private as well as shared memory the program uses, so it's not a good indication of how much memory the program really occupies. This is the figure that task manager shows by default.

IMHO the most important figure is "Private Bytes" - this is the amount of memory the process has actually allocated that cannot be shared with other processes. So if memory is trimmed, this is how much that'll end up paged out to disk.

Working set is still important though, as it's the memory that "is recently been touched", and thus should be kept in memory. If you look closely at memory stats after running, say, trimws

, you will often see working set size jumping way down, only to rise by 100+ kb after a split second.

When I'm stressed I'm tending to post too hasty - and I'm stressed right now: For two days we have been serving several hundred people more than usual, at work. Re-reading my "disclaimer" I can now see that becuse of my poor wording, I have yet again given the wrong impression: The M8 Free Clip WILL DO all these tricks! But the author removed the permanent memory part, meaning that these smart links will 'roll off' as soon as you add new clips, and so be almost worthless. Teasing only.

Hope I got it right this time...

"Phew!"?? I don't see it this way. The author doesn't pretent to be some kind of philanthropist or hide that he is trying to make a living out of programming. In my mind the problem is that I never cared to check these 'features', because I have no need for them, but only assumed they were fully available in the free version. (But who would ever need the $30 Spartan version then?) My bad it is.
