I have started using Lynx. it is great, it is awesome and it is a total no b@llshit approach. It makes surfing fun again(no flash banners, no video ads, only text) ! I was wondering if there are any lynx user here, maybe we can create a tips and tricks section. I am relatively new user. I hope that more people would use it so that developement continues

"Lynx is a text browser for the World Wide Web. Lynx 2.8.5 runs on Un*x, VMS, Windows 95/98/NT, DOS386+ but not 3.1, 3.11, or OS/2 EMX. The current developmental version is also available for testing. Ports to Mac are in beta test."

I would love to try this, but...I have Vista.
Unless, does NT include Vista? There are NT files on this PC...

Thanks Kartal, but I don't even understand the page, it's way over my head...no problem though, if you run into something idiot-friendly, keep me in mind

Download this, uncompress into a folder and run.

To be able to goto any page press "g" when lynx is open and type the url. That should give you a good head start.

OK, I did it, but when I got to a web site, I couldn't select anything & it's not taking my arrow commands.

It was fun to try, though, just a little rustic for me

Lynx is really beautiful. Do not you like those colored text?

Try it on http://slashdot.org/

SKesselman · « **Reply #10 on:** September 20, 2008, 08:05 AM »

slashdot on LYNX: OUCH...not even color can make it OK

hehe, wait till Gothic sees this post

He's Lynx's nb 1 user.

urlwolf · « **Reply #13 on:** September 20, 2008, 10:47 AM »

by the way if you like text-only browsers you can try links, elinks, and links2. They do CSS (to a extent) and frames as well. But gothic actually likes lynx better.

Urlwolf thanks for suggestions!

Saw it

(making this post with lynx, btw)
Even though links,links2, and elinks have features like better table rendering and limited css support, i find that more sites work correctly with lynx. Lynx has some features that it's clones still lack.
That said, there is still lots of room for improvement. I dream of a text-based browser that can render all pages well and supports websites that use retarded(sorry, i mean modern) technologies. But no text-based browser has that as a design goal. Neither of all the mentioned projects aim to ever be a >full< browser that can support everything. Which is a shame really, but understandable. It would take immense amounts of work, and there's very little interest. That said, sites can be awesome to use when they are designed with lynx in mind. I wish dc had a lynx version

It would probably be useful for users of mobile devices too.

I still like the lynx version better because it doesn't try to put that column on the left, which really eats up a lot of space in a terminal.I much prefer the way lynx just renders everything full-width.

Note that I couldn't even log into the forum and post with links2.

So, the Gothi[c]-links2 blocker does work then!

There's certainly beauty in minimalism. Any app that does not get in your way is your friend.

kartal · « **Reply #19 on:** September 21, 2008, 07:09 PM »

I tried links too. I like lynx better so far because it has this coloring that helps to seperate text while reading.

kartal · « **Reply #20 on:** September 22, 2008, 12:49 AM »

Only problem I am having with Lynx is that it is non rendering non english characters properly. I tried different character coding did not do it right. On the otherhand lInks2 does it right.

Also How can I use css for links2?

Any ideas?

OMG I'm sorry for my rude reply, Kartal!!!
I thought you were joking when you asked if I liked the colors.
Just...pay no attention...

kartal · « **Reply #22 on:** September 22, 2008, 04:51 AM »

I was joking yes

But as reading functionality wise it really helps. It gives texts order and priority.
