If u need to run The Gimp in the same window (I really don't see what the problem is with multiple windows) u can use http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=3892 or TameGimp (if u can find it). How they work? bo, you have to see that for yourself.
Maybe there are other plugins or software that do the same thing but I could not find another.

Backgroundwindow.exe and Backgroundwindowhook.dll from registry.gimp.org/plugin are both stamped June 2005. They do the job, but it is really not too impressive - there is this single window, and that is what they are supposed to do, give The Gimp one window only, but the window is larger than the screen, and scrolling is odd. However; they do the job:

I found it impossible to download TameGimp; it may (also) be too old?

Hirudin, I see your point. Photofiltre Studio and its free version, Photofiltre, have always been a basic image editing app, i.e., good for guys with simple needs like myself, but not recommended for big or professional jobs.

Hey hey Curt.. The reason why I am listing it within the ranks of GIMP and PS is because it is very good. :-P What I mean was I never actually used it.. (Only to crop an image and add some text).. A lot of people like it - I'm not downing it in any way.

Thanks, mitzevo, for clarifying.

I was impressed with the collection of plugins for Paint.NET - but as time has passed bye I too must admit that I really don't use Paint.NET. Its not a bad program in anyway, it somehow just isn't right.

back ontopic:
the pan tool being something like the hand tool in Acrobat Reader/Photoshop etc
where you can move the view of the image within the window as opposed to actually
moving the image around on the page so-to-speak.
difficult to explain in words but i reckon you all know it anyways

It looks to me as if you have to use the scroll bars or the navigation pane/dialog.

I couldnt find anything about it in Gimpland/googleland
(well apart from the guy who thought the zoom tool was the pan tool cause the icon looked like a fryingpan

)

Edit: Actually it's not as it only moves the selection etc. Found this on gimp.org... panning was apparently added in 2.3 (they're gearing up to release a stable 2.4 at the moment):

Haven't read this thread, so apologies if this is stale news: the UK magazine Amateur Photographer has lately been recommending Picture Window Pro as a low-cost $89.99 package "that in some respects rivals Photoshop CS3 for functionality," albeit "you may struggle with the interface at first."

That's a zoom tool, the icon looks like a pan, so is that why you called it a
pan tool?

I just downloaded it today & have 2.2something - 2.3 must be Beta will go check
(my old copy of Photoshop just stopped working today after I installed my old copy of illustrater but thats another story

)
In my current install of Gimp spacebar moves the image off the.. ??.. "frame" as opposed to panning.
Strange though,
that would be one of the first things I'd think about implementing for
when you zoom in & want to move around a bit - maybe it's a difficult one to code.
So I look forward to that because it does look very good, the Gimp!

oops, sorry, forgot to say I sorted that out

I had made a new hotkey in DOpus - Shift+M,
hadnt made one in a while & forgot the default is to create a systemwide hotkey -
I'll blame DOpus[8]

will save that tip though
cause I'm having some real keyboard problems with another keyboard/computer

I only found binaries for 2.2.17 (from memory), the source is released for versions up to 2.4 but I have not seen any binaries above 2.2

yeah, its 2.2.17.

I probably wont be really testing it that much -
I crop rotate scale etc a bit for work. for me I do a bit of messing around with photos -
but again in Photoshop I generally only do selective sharpening & a bit on contrast
(my camera's colour is good so generally I dont have to mess around with that)

Photofiltre happens to have less features but is free for non-commercial use .

Personally, I use Paint.net. If you're used to GIMP then it might not be as big of an issue for you, but I found it extremely crowded and user-unfriendly.

Paint.net has all the features that I personally use, and has a very nice layout.

I'm using a XP-Pen Star G430 OSU Drawing Tablet for my drawings in Paint.NET, and it works pretty well but does not support pressure sensitivity..
