A programmers notepad w/ syntax highlighting

[Josh]

Friends, Roman's, Countrymen, lend me your ears.

I am calling out tonight for your help in finding a programmers notepad utility. Said utility should be able to run off a usb stick WITHOUT installation. Said program should have syntax highlighting which is upgradable via text files with programming definitions.

Doest thy fine community haveth anything forth me?

PSPad works well for me.. even though there's a plethora of notepad tools with syntax-highlight available on the web.. we await for the response from other members of community..

Vim!

Vim seems to be a good one, however, it seems to have a steep learning curve. Does anyone else have any suggestions while I try out vim? I like PsPad however I cannot get it to work properly from my USB drive. Notepad++ is another I will try next.

Thanks again to all for replying

glad to be of help, Josh.. btw, here are some threads that will help make PSPad portable..

• Running PSPad from a pen drive

• Portable Version

It sure does.
If you don't intend to use vim very frequently, i wouldn't recommend you go that way, as the time it'd take you to learn how to use it would be more than you'd actually benefit from using it.
If, on the other hand, you intend to use it as your all-around editor as i do, you will definitelly love it

I have decided upon notepad++ which starts up very quickly and has all the necessary features I want. If only I could find a color scheme which resembles the old green text with black background like on older terminals for it. I've found a few, but none with those particulars. Any ideas?

O child! You have indeed thought wisely. Therefore, I shall confer upon you the wisdom of old that sayeth that Notepad++ is the Holy Grail of the unlimited freedom software worlds. And verily so for making changes to your character(s). Swiftly and without hurting limb. You shall seek plugins and extensions and you shall code and it will be well. You shall use code folding and it will be well. You shall customize autocompletion and it shall be well.

If only I could find a color scheme which resembles the old green text with black background like on older terminals for it.

You shall customize as you wish within five sixtieths of the hour and it shall be well.

ok ok .... I guess you got the idea

[Josh]

Yeah, I could, but that takes more time than I have right now. I was more hoping for some pre-configs like pspad, notepad2 and vim have

= Settings > Style Configurator if i understand correctly

[Josh]

Yeah, I have seen how to do this, but this also requires editing the colors for each language I have configured for it. Hence, why I would like a preconfigured style.

Do keep in mind that Notepad++ is still under development, though, and has some bugs. I would stay away from using the "explorer" and "function list" plugins by default, until you've tested them extensively on text you don't mind losing...

If you want an editor that allows you to install new syntax files to it (includes syntax files on the site), then you could use Crimson Editor.

I have pay for editors which i like but obviously I don't install them when on a machine for a few days, on a contract or something. When I need to install an editor for a while, I have used pspad, crimson, context and they're all pretty nice editors.

I have used context quite a lot recently as it is quick and has a lot of useful feature (text snippets, favorites, column select, little things like this). It doesn't seem to play well with unicode, so if i need unicode i get pspad

All of the mentioned programs are great options, especially PSPad.

Although I'll give Vim a no-no

My female companion here is calling me a freak because we're talking about text editors

That's probably because she uses Emacs.

Notepad++ is the best one!
