Recommendations for good copy/move software?
« on: February 27, 2007, 04:52 AM »
Is there good copy/move software available out there that gets integrated into the right-click context menu or can be called from a keyboard shortcut?  I'm not looking for something that is part of a software package like a file manager or explorer replacement.  Just it's own thing that simply does copy and move.  The best one I've tried over the years came with Powerdesk Pro, and here is a screenshot:

What's good about it is that:
  • It lists the files being moved/copied on the left
  • It allows you to choose the folder to move/copy the files to, or you can type an address to create a folder or just manually enter it.
  • It can be called from the right-click context menu
  • You can choose to move or copy within the dialog (if you change your mind)
  • Has a drop down of recently used directories

As you can see, it's pretty cool.  I've never encountered another one like it that's a standalone product.  Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks!

If you find a good solution and become attached to it, the solution may become your next problem.

No one mentioned FileMenu Tools, which I found in the excellent Donationcoder Newsletter. Whoever originally found that, wow, you're awesome! ;)

Oh, if anyone wants the context menu thumbnail thingie, it's here.

I think that I'd be using either Beyond Compare or Directory Opus for that...

They say the fastest is robocopy (cmd app). There is a GUI version of it, but no right click integration.

One of the best file copy tools is supposed to be RichCopy, a multithreaded file copier with a nice GUI. Unfortunately its a Microsoft internal tool only and though there are many some download links on google, none of them work.

Now THIS is what I want in an image organizer!

Its a pretty detailed article about what's missing in Picasa but is more general in scope. There are also GUI mockups and I must say this looks like the ideal photo management app. If only Google listens and makes it so!

given Micro$oft's reputation, it might just be a vapor-ware.. ;)
