windows 98
« on: December 23, 2006, 03:56 AM »
I just got my old hard drive back and it was messed up bad the OS would not start up. I put win 98 on it because I do not like 200o professional. I am having problems with it though. Before it got messed up it had windowsXP on it. Now with 98 on it I cannot change the color to anything greater than 16 bit and it's not recognizing some of the hardware on my comp like my ethernet card. Can ANYONE tell me why or give me some tips on what to do?

Have you tried looking for updated drivers for your GFX Card?

Drop Win98 and go back to WinXP or Win2K  :)  You are just asking for a world of hurt using an OS that MS does not support any longer.  The security holes you will have will be big enough to drive a bus through.

What was wrong with Win2K.  It was a great, solid OS.

You most likely need to obtain and install drivers for all your hardware.

You will need ones specific for Windows 98.

Did your PC come with any CD's with drivers on them?

If you have a brand name pc, you can go to the manufacturer's website and there should be an area there for their customers to download drivers. Just enter your pc's serial number and you will be offered the drivers to download.

Or you can search Google with the brand & model number for each item of hardware that isn't functioning properly, followed by the word 'drivers'. You might have to actually physically look at the hardware to find out what it is, if you don't have it written down somewhere.

+1 for Veign

Drop 98. It was never meant to be a real networking OS. Windows 2000 is an excellent OS. There may be a few things you don't like, but it certainly beats 98 hands down.

You're only asking for trouble with 98. I don't think I would wish that kind of pain on anyone. Well, maybe a few people. :)
