What's the license on the code?

What's the license on the code?

Think about that question after reading the title again.

So you're hosting code in your repository that you don't have the legal right to? And deceptively calling it "OpenOpera" as if it was FOSS?

I deleted it.

At least people can now work on it and port it to any system that can run it.

I don't personally think that's an upside for stealing someone's property.  And though you took it out of your own repo, you have a link to another repo, and I'm not sure that's what we really want to host here.  There are plenty of places for any interested party to find that information.  As Deo alluded to, there's no license.  So it's not really legal to even work on, truthfully.  The rules don't change when it's a profit making organization.  And it's pretty obvious that they consider it theirs.

Is the work licensed under an open source license? If so, which open source license? Are the allegedly infringing files being used under the open source license, or are they in violation of the license?

This is proprietary source code owned by Opera Software AS.

If you are "fixing" Opera how about tackling the chromium-based Opera so that it properly imports and exports bookmarks including favicons?    I am not sure of the status of chromium-based Opera source though.

The only way I found to get bookmarks with favicons without manually visiting hundreds of sites, into Opera was to copy the Bookmarks file from Slimjet over the Opera generated one.  It is hard for me to believe with all these generations of browsers such basic things are still sticking points.

I am not the one patching and compiling it. The OP of the post located at http://forum.timsky.ru/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=138 is doing that.

Just trying to inject a little humor.

Oh, hooray. Another chat thing which nobody else uses. Why?

Oh, hooray. Another chat thing which nobody else uses. Why?

People do use it.

[Shades]

There are many chat thingies out there. Skype is quite often very slow when we communicate between continents as of late. So I took it on myself to look for a relatively similar chat application that is browser based and that I am able to host myself. Installing (unvetted) clients is a definite no-no in the places with which I need to communicate. But browsers are much less of a (legal) problem.

Mattermost is one of the more interesting self-hosted options out there, but it relies on NGINX (or however you spell their name) web server software. And that is not what I'm using. Alternatives are a dime a dozen, but not nearly as useful as they promise to be. So I do get where Tuxman's "aversion" to yet another chat app comes from. At least I think I do.

Yes, using a program based on stolen source code, with binaries compiled by an unknown party - what could possibly go wrong?

I have been using the build that I linked to in the post above yours for a while now with nothing going wrong.

I think the point is that past success is no guarantee of future success, especially when you're dealing with a bootleg copy.  Do you check the source every time you update?  And build it yourself?  If the answer to both of those questions is not 'yes', then you're setting yourself up.  It may never come to fruition, but that risk is too much to be taking these days.

A new build of Opera 12.15 is now available at https://u.teknik.io/d5xIK.zip which has fixed the crash caused by the "OpProgressField::UpdateProgress" portion of its code.

[Zero3K]

Is there anyone who wants to work on it? And yes, I build it myself (with VS 2010).
