That 'internal advert' is something that really ad(d)s something to the site.

The menu used does seem a bit sluggish in some places.
I'll look into it..

One thing that I'm fairly sure will change before the real site goes live is that those deep menus will change to only be 1 level deep.
Having the super deep menus in the navigation bar is fun to be able to see the entire site structure, but I think it may be a bit overwhelming.

So for example there won't be this:

What isn't too obvious in the menu, is that you can click on every level in the menu and get to see the page from that point on, allowing to navigate deeper down if desired. Then the sluggishness is extra confusing, as it seems nothing happens after clicking...
Removing that huge menu structure is going to take away that confusion I guess  though giving feedback after clicking would still be really nice.

Yes, exactly.  That is one of the main motivations for removing the deep structure -- otherwise it is not at all clear that those intermediate items in the menu are actual (important) pages.
Removing the deep structure in the navigation bar will eliminate that problem and people will need to progress through the pages to reach a deep page.

Sorry just saw this thread ...

Glad you are liking Joomla

What I have been doing is using a combo of drop  down and cascading vertical menus

Check out www.tanyaanisimova.com and look in the Tanya and Sheet Music Menus

Hey Carol!
Yeah, that's not a bad idea..

Though I think I have a pretty good solution in place with some custom extensions I've written (I've enjoyed writing joomla extensions).
With my approach the page content of parent pages is dynamically generated from the menu structure, to yield parent pages that look like those shown here.
Perhaps the nicest thing about this approach is that if pages are added and moved around, those parent pages are automatically always up to date.

I find submenu structures on websites rather counter-intuitive. You'll most likely have to perform severe "trial-and-error" about where to find what you are looking for.
I bet when Cheetahs race and one of them cheats, the other one goes "Man, you're such a Cheetah!" and they laugh & eat a zebra or whatever.

Nice

Whatever you do don't be tempted by the Kunena forum software (flippin' nighmare!!) - keep is as a separate thing with a matching theme!

Do not trust and do not take risks. Assure the operation by reviewing it as if you were not a computer engineer or a software engineer.

In other professional forums I love they forgot the elemental steps and lose the security copy, or make errors than now we are regretting.

To be honest, I am starting to be curious. :)

Still, there is that saying: "90% of any software related project takes 90% of the time, the remaining 10% takes the other 90% of the time..."
The easy path is usually downhill...

So there are a few things I could use help with:

  • I could use a few people to go through the entire new site and look for typos, spelling errors, and other ways text could get improved on any given page, and to report these suggestions to me.
  • I could use a few people to look for more general suggestions of ways the site appearance could be tweaked -- not looking for major change ideas at this point, just images or layouts that could be improved a bit.
  • I could use one dedicated and detail oriented person to help build the big redirect list mapping old urls to new urls.  This won't be a fun job but it's a critical one that will make all of the old urls automatically redirect to new ones.  This job basically involves taking a list of the few hundred old urls and finding where on the new site the best matching new page is, and then building a list of these pairs.
  • I could use a few people going through old (current website) and looking for pages that might have been missed and not reproduced on the new site.  This job has overlap with the one above.

Volunteers?

For those who are merely curious but aren't prepared to devote real time to helping at this point, hang in there -- I will soon make a video showing off the new site.  After we get everything tweaked we will open the beta to everyone here for a while before it goes live.

If you think my English is good enough, I can volunteer weekends. For a few weeks at least, those are completely my own.

I submerged twice weeks ago in the oldest posts and Renegade website seems down.

My apologies, but, for some time now I had meant to bring up this observable disparity (evident in the forum web pages in comment EDIT mode), seemingly between views on Chrome-based and views on IE browsers. I forgot to mention it until today, when I again noticed it and had time to do a proper capture and document a record of the thing.
Not sure whether it has been documented by anyone before, but here it is anyway:

How strange! I wonder if its an add blocker on your end doing it, or if its some css code in the forum display that i am not aware of.

I disabled BadAdJohnny for the DC domain, refreshed the page, and that restored the Youtube icon/button. Can see it now as I edit this.
Thanks.
Now I wonder why BAJ picked on only that button?
