If anybody here would know who that is, it probably would be app103. She's the only person I know who is even more into fringe and obscure musicians, instruments, and idioms than I am. ;D

How about it April? You're our resident whiz for this sort of thing. :)

Unfortunately, I can't help with this one. Not really an expert in foreign language (non-English) music.

Only one artist comes to mind when referring to songs in a made up language, and that would be Adiemus, but they didn't come into existence till the 90's...and they really couldn't be considered pop, any way. (new age)

Thanks, but definitely not that one, the singer is alone, and has a child-like voice.  I have a little hope to identify this song by asking a friend of my sisters that spent some time in UK.  But in any cases, keep sending suggestions and many thanks for all those already received.  If I could just remember the melody, this would help a lot, but for the moment it's gone.  Hypnosis  maybe ?

I have a similar experience with Köln Recital by Keith Jarett.  At that time, when one of my sisters brought back home this record and played it, I was mesmerized by this strange music.  Many years later, I came across a CD transcription of that legendary concert, and when I listened to it again after all those years, I couldn't recognize it, only the strangeness of the music was familiar.  I guess it would be the same here.

I think I have an inkling of what you're looking for, but I heard it a long time ago in the company of some very interesting individuals whose whereabouts I no longer know.

You mentioned french; perhaps a female singer covering Plastic Bertrand's "Ça Plane Pour Moi"? (the lyrics apparently make no sense, even in the original french).

As an aside, I did find something interesting in my searches:

The song was produced with the purpose of exposing Italian pop artists and musicians who were deceiving the public, pretending to speak/understand English lyrics and plagiarizing American and English songs, so this was a satirical parody to underscore the fact that those artists and musicians were not fluent in any form of English at all, and the Italian public would accept and popularize any song sounding like English, whether or not it was accurate.

Or maybe it could be one of these?:

Not the '70s, but the gestalt bears a resemblance:

Thanks.  It was none of them but I'll definitely have a look to the website you mention.

I happen to have this album. I think one of the tracks was used by Newtek, a US company that made the "Video Toaster" for Amiga a while back.  And sorry, it's not part of this album.  Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion and no alas, not that one.  The singer was alone and younger. AFAIR.

Hi all,

A friend of mine, actually a friend of my sisters, was able to recall the melody, but not the title neither the singer.  She thinks however she might be Finnish, so much for a non existing language...

Here is the public link to this tune :

If this inspires anyone...

Thanks.

BTW Bjork is from Iceland, I don't know if icelandish and finnish are related.

That's just a wild guess, from her.  But since she teaches linguistics in La Sorbonne in Paris, I guess this might be a clue.  In the seventies I has never heard of finnish before, so there was no way I could dinstinguish it from a made up language.

I thought it was a language invented on the Muppets.
But on searching, I discovered that was Sweedish :D

lol! you're joking. i hope.

fyi: Tolkien modeled his elvish language (called: quenyan) on the finnish language. if you go look on youtube for readings from the Kalevala (finland's national epic) you can hear what it sounds like. it's a pretty language. Tolkein also borrowed from the Kalevala for his own stories. :-)

Eureka : it is Ekkoleg by Grethe Agatz,
http://www.watzatsong.com/fr/found/Grethe%20Agatz-BO%20Viva%20la%20muerte%20(Ekkoleg)-63781.html

I heard it by chance in a TV movie broadcasted a few days ago and it was mentioned at the end of the credits.

Thanks to all who helped !

That other link appears to have been taken down, but here is a YouTube link.

And it's in Danish.

Thanks for the fixed link.  And it's funny, I spent 9 months in Denmark but that was 15 years later...  And even when I listen to this tune now, I barely recognize Danish.  No wonder it was so hard to identify it.  BTW, the website pointed by my link seems interesting in case of another mystery tune...

Thanks for this find !  Let's say Michel Jonasz, co-writer, has already been much more inspired...  May I ask how you came to this page ?  Anyway, thanks a lot !

^ No mystery: I didn't like the Danish version, so I followed some of the links from watzatsong.
