...And don't forget the old school hacks! The typewriter ribbon must be destroyed before disposal...or it can be scrolled out to read every work that was typed on the machine.

There's a lot to be said for the protection that real world impediments can introduce to even the most sophisticated all-electronic methods.

Take networks. You have firewalls, multiple tiers of authentication, encryption, etc. But if you absolutely want to be 100% sure you keep things out, the single best "solution" is to send a junior tech down to the wire room and have them physically pull the cable from the WAN port(s) on your router(s).

And yeah, that's one reason why it's almost always uniquely color coded. You'll find a single yellow or red cable in almost every network switch room. Two guesses what it is.

Last I heard, one time cipher pads and 'spy' paper are still among the most bulletproof and secure of all covert communications methodologies. So it hardly surprises me typewriters are making a limited comeback. No tool like an old tool...

  I'm already set, have a shredder for things with sensitive data, then it gets burned in the burn barrel.  Gotta love living out in the middle of nowhere.

Of course the Russians know how typewriters can be compromised, since they were the ones that made the first keyloggers (for use on IBM Selectrics)...for spying on the US.

  I used to use the IBM Selectrics back in my Air Force days.  The Selectrics used for typing sensitive data had to have their print cartridges shredded and burned by DOD standards.  The kicker was, the Selectrics had a memory function that would remember everything typed until it was cleared by selecting the Clear Memory button.....  I used that function for typing duplicates.

!  ..That could explain why I got thrown out of typing class back in high school.
