Seeking Little App w/Specific Actions

[siouxdax]

Hello all:
I'm looking for a neat little app to sit in my tray that will allow me to move a window from monitor to monitor, and also to minimize a window to the system tray.

Already UltraMon moves my windows from monitor to monitor via hotkeys. To minimize a window/app to the tray I use DM2 (https://sourceforge.net/projects/dm2/), and lately been crashing for no reason (I've seen on SourceForge that I'm not the only one with that issue).

So does anyone know of an app that does at least those two little things? Other tweaky options are nice and all, but those two are my essentials! BTW I tried Actual Windows Manager, and it's a nightmare of options. I think it may be too much for me.

Have a look at WindowsPager which I use constantly.
It sits on the taskbar not in the tray but may fit the bill :

Features:

    * virtual desktops, workspaces for Windows Vista/7/XP/2000
    * arrange your running applications on different desktops to improve overview
    * integration into the panel
    * several patterns possible
    * 64 bit support
    * move windows between desktops by drag 'n drop or by using the window menu
    * optional keyboard shortcuts for switching the desktop
    * set a window "sticky": always visible
    * "Mini-Windows" give an overview from each desktop
    * support for "Flashing-Windows" (notify for new messages in Mirc for example)
    * keep a window above all others by selecting "Keep on top" from the window menu
    * drag `n drop between desktops
    * dual/multi monitor support
    * no administrator rights necessary
    * no installation
    * safe: automatic window restore even on crash by use of two separate processes.

WinSplit Revolution can do both with hotkeys (well, minimise, though probably not to the system tray).

I don't have a multi-monitor setup, so I don't know anything about utilities to move a window from one to the other, but as far as stashing an app's window in the tray, I use PS Tray Factory for that.

You could try out Actual Window Manager or Actual Multiple Monitors at www.actualtools.com.

I'm not affilated with them but I use and like AWM and the author is responsive.

Luck!

I've sort of tried Actual Window Manager, but I was overwhelmed by the tabs and tabs of options. The other recommendations in this post just don't fill the bill, so when I'm more human I will investigate AWM.

My solution to that is just to ignore the bits I don't need

What about Displayfusion 5?

Steam hammer to crack a walnut?

Interesting to see another, younger Wilma, than the Wilma I knew.

So, this Wilma is not this Wilma:

Huh, no WiLMA is not Wilma but what can you do with a program whose instructions are so opaque, viz. "The right arrow key can be used to jump to the next result… "
What would happen if one were to press the wrong arrow key?

RBTray at portableapps.com will handle minimize to tray (freeware). Pretty lightweight, portable and no UI to speak of.

Well:
I had DisplayFusion, but it was version 3, and well, let's say it wasn't exactly a legit copy. It kept annoying me with pop-ups. And being on
disability I can't just throw down $25 for the cheapest paid version. I don't want the free version, as it leaves out a lot of features I want
and/or need.

As far as WILMA is concerned, I'll have to read more, or rather, again, as my brain hasn't recovered from my sleeping medication from last
night.

And while Actual Window Manager has the allure of scads of options, RBTray may be a good option, too, for its simplicity.

I'll take some time and report back. I've still got AWM installed so I'll fiddle with that too.

Why is the portableapps wrapper needed?

RBTray is available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/rbtray/files/rbtray/4.3/

32-bit/64-bit versions included in the ZIP package.

I agree about the portableapps wrapper. I downloaded it from the link you provided. I may test it out a bit later. I'm having sort of a bad night. I'll report back on how it goes.

Thanks all!

out of curiosity, what's your workflow here?

just wondering how and why you move windows now (ie is there a 'rule set')

[siouxdax]

Well, I don't work; I'm disabled. But I love to work on my computer, which has two monitors. I play games, check out Facebook and StumbleUpon, but I don't just do that sort of thing. I like to tinker, for lack of a better word, on my machine. So there's no real "workflow". I'm just very particular to how things are on my monitors. Two big things are high on my list. One is which monitor should an app appear, and of course some have to be tossed back and forth. The other is ensuring the app is centered on the monitor. There are a few I place elsewhere, but most are centered. So, in a nutshell, my workflow is OCD.

so apart from a few apps that 'must' be on a given monitor, all other movements are effectively random?

Just trying to understand how you thought an 'app' might go about managing this

[siouxdax]

Well, most of my apps I have "assigned" to a specific monitor. When I install a new app, it takes me some time before I can decide which monitor it belongs to. Two things: all video is on the left. Web browser or anything I'm reading goes on the riight.

Not sure what you meant by "all other movements are effectively random".

so apps could be assigned to one of 2 lists (left or right) and they could be positioned accordingly.  Anything else would float pending allocation

I'm a heavy portable application user so that is where I encountered it. As for why, the site said that there was some ambiguity in the original release as to whether the program was running or not and some user confusion about how to operate the program with no UI.  Not saying that anyone here would fall into that category. The launcher AFAIK, adds a splash screen on first run and a notification that the program is already running on subsequent tries. Seems like a bit of a crutch, aside from making it mesh with their platform. It works like a charm for my workflow though  .
