Hang'em High

MAJOR ASS-KICKING FLICK!

I used to have the sound track to that. Great music and amazing film!

High Plains Drifter
A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY <<<< Damned if that's not one of the best flicks ever!
The Outlaw Jose Wales

The Clint spaghetti westerns are just fantastic! Huge fan of them here!

oops I meant High Plains Drifter, the one with a town next to a lake.
I also like to revisit the sense of humor of David Lynch, as in the film Wild at Heart or the tv series Twin Peaks.

Though I have seen him in archives of old TV Western/cowboy series (I forget which ones), after watching the superb "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" I reckoned that you could be guaranteed that pretty much any Western or other flick with Clint Eastwood in it was going to be worth watching. When he started acting in them and producing them, things took a step up.
Most memorable for me are: "A Fistful of Dollars", "For a Few Dollars More", "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", "High Plains Drifter", "Play Misty for Me", "Dirty Harry", "Magnum Force", "The Enforcer", "The Outlaw Josey Wales", "Every Which Way But Loose", "Bird", "Unforgiven" "The Bridges of Madison County", and "Gran Torino".

I think my favorite "western" is the sci-fi classic Outland with Sean Connery as Federal District Marshall W.T. O'Niel. This is a traditional story of corruption set in a frontier mining town - except this time it's on Io. This flick has it all: the lone honest lawman, the corrupt big company mine boss, the burned out doctor, dishonest deputies, the local saloon, dance-hall ladies, hired gunmen ...

That is a good one.

I'd add Serenity to that list also, and Westworld.

Yul Brynner's character in Westworld freaked me out, as a kid. (still does)

I just got hold of the Avengers, and I have such a soft spot for Superhero movies. However I skipped the individual movies of Thor, Hulk, Captain America. But the Avengers got to have Joss Whedon as director and he pulled it all together and made it mostly hold together, so it gets my vote for "worth the $5 I paid in McDonalds from some lady for a knockoff."

Movies with Sean Connery are practically all in the same league as the Clint Eastwood movies. 'In the Name Of The Rose' is a great movie from S.C.

At least you got to admire the comely and wholesomely sexy Ms. Jenny Agutter in that one.

True, but Sean Connery in diapers is pretty enticing to some people as well.

And it's got that whole pro-gun message that's quite relevant today.

Plus, giant stone heads are awesome. And a flying one?!? Awesomest!

Really, what's not to like about Zardoz?

For cheezy but enjoyable I'll take the original (1976) Logan's Run any day.

Hey, I happen to love Logan's Run!

Really, what's not to like about Zardoz?

The thing that really bugged me about Zardoz was it's obvious moralizing and a relentlessly formulaic counter-culture vibe. (A product of the times since 1974 was a good year for that sort of mindset.) I mean, like ok...warlike men bad...military bad...liberated feminist females good...government is evil...technology is evil...we get it already.

I think my real complaint was that it never really lived up to it's premise. I was expecting some big revelation and some clever OMG plot twist. And it never materialized. The story was fairly weak and predictable - and the utterly unsatisfying ending was easily one of the most contrived reveals ever attempted. I mean seriously - all that for that?

Unfortunately, Zardoz isn't alone in that regard. Some more recent films such as The Number 23, Lady in the Water, and Shutter Island all had that same problem: intriguing concept, good build-up, capable cast - and then...nada. Almost like the producers didn't have a clue where to take it so they just wrapped it all up with a contrived resolution and a lousy payoff. Which was a shame considering the money they spent making them. And an even bigger shame considering the money their audience spent to watch them.

So it goes. $:-\$

Switching gears for a second, does anybody find movies that take place in subways or on trains (or in train stations) particularly enjoyable like I do? (Freudians can feel free draw their own conclusions about that...

)

Here are two "subway" movies I really like.

First up is the 1985 film Subway - a sweet little French work that is surprisingly poignant while still remaining fun.

Well, I loved the original "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" - the depiction of New Yorkers was classic.

I also like "The Warriors" quite a bit - it's kind of a subway movie. I remember watching it on "Joe Bob's Last Call", and he had an MTA map that he used when coming back from the commercial breaks to show exactly what the progress of the Warriors was:

3:10 to Yuma was great! Both the original and the remake.

Now, I'm going to go out on a limb here...

I liked watching Zardoz!!!

I really did.

However, I watched it knowing the philosophy and ideology that it put forward. I'd read about it and the metaphor that it uses. So, when I went to watch it, I had that 20/20 hindsight already there. That made the movie different for me and actually enjoyable.
