Dude, where are the old school pc guys? Anyone remember these classics? I had an Apple IIe, and later, a IBM 486.

Prince of Persia
Another World (or Out of this World)
Castle Wolfenstein
Bruce Lee
Aztec
Bard's Tale
Spear of Destiny
Star Control (oh yeah!)

Bard's Tale - What a great game. Me and my brother used to stay up until 4:00am playing Bard's Tale on the Apple IIc.

4D Prince of Persia (which was freeware from the beginning, contrary to popular belief) rocked... Another World and Flashback which is mistakenly thought as its sequel were really nice games as well, actually I was stuck at some level in the latter so I recall getting very angry on it and abandoning it for Capitalism

There were parts of Another World that were excruciatingly difficult to pass. I still remember this part where you had to take an elevator to the bottom, run to the left and immediately shoot as soon as the next screen appeared. The timing was soooo hard. Remember the ending? you hop on the flying dragon with the translucent red wings and fly away! Oh man, that's great!

I've never heard of Flashback...

superboyac - 486 = old school

I don't think so

I remembered another classic... Montezuma's Revenge for DOS 2.1. It was amazing how much they could cram into 18k. That's kilobytes, not MB.

I used to play on a 3270-PC. It was an early model IBM, that had integrated 3270 emulation as well as DOS. 5.25" floppy (360k) and a whopping 10M drive. The stupid emulation software took 128k or more RAM and like a whole 1.5 M of HD.

Sometimes, I don't miss the DOS days

I mentioned Wolfenstein 3D and Star Control earlier. I played Prince of Persia and Flashback but they weren't among my favorites. Full Throttle was pretty funny, though, but nothing beat the Space Quest series' humor. Good times. Good times.

Lode Runner! Yeah, I played that game all the way through, it took forever. Did you ever fall down somewhere that you couldn't get out of?

486 counts as old school! That was 1993!

Wow.. down memory lane here...

Prince of Persia...
Dune
Jazz the Jackrabbit
Simcity 2000
Wolfenstien
Syndicate
StarTrail
DukeNukem
Policequest 1
Spacequest 1
Gabriel Knight 1

Mind you, most of these were played with a pc-squeeker and EGA

Deozaan · « **Reply #60 on:** April 22, 2006, 05:52 AM »

I forgot to mention Syndicate. That was an awesome game my brother and I spent hours playing.

We'd take over the first town and set the tax rates at the right place and leave it on so when we got home from school we'd have plenty of money to do the research and give our operatives the best gear right from the get go. Awesome stuff. I loved converting enemy operatives to my side rather than killing them. Easy recruits.

Two of my (first and) most memorable are Alley Cat and Digger

koncool · « **Reply #62 on:** April 22, 2006, 10:12 AM »

Alley Cat was legendary...

mouser · « **Reply #63 on:** April 22, 2006, 10:47 AM »

never heard of alley cat - got a pic?
Cloq - gabriel knight was excellent.

Alley cat - real classic: http://www.abandonia.com/games/24/download/AlleyCat.htm

OK - the Duke Nukem reference reminded me of another obsession: Commander Keen.

As I recall, Apogee/ID software released 3 games at a time. The also made Duke Nukem.

Jeez, reading this lot really makes me feel old!
The only computers that were about when I were a nipper were in the CIA, the Kremlin and MI6!
The first PC I ever used was an Amstrad CPC464 with a green screen and a cassette drive; I bought it as a main Chrizzie prezzie for my kids back in, at a guess, 1989 and spent the best part of a week leaning how to get the thing to work!
I've still got it somewhere, I belive, complete with a dozen or so games that the nippers used to play.
The odd thing is that now they're householders and parents themselves, they don't even have a PC in the house between them - I'm the only family geek!
JB.

I've just now remembered Death Rally from the same guys who did duke nukem3d. I loved to play this micro-machines-like game (with a few twists

).

Here's a screenshot:

f0dder · « **Reply #71 on:** April 28, 2006, 06:41 PM »

Heh, Death Rally was 3D realms? Didn't know that. Wonderful game, fast action, very well coded, smooth, etc. I always pick up the mushrooms on purpose btw

jgpaiva · « **Reply #72 on:** April 28, 2006, 06:58 PM »

Ok.. This is one real classic.
Do you recognize this image?

How about this one:

This game's name was "bow and arrow".

superboyac · « **Reply #73 on:** April 29, 2006, 08:49 AM »

Yes!! I remember that game! That was actually one of the first games I ever played! Haha...I totally remember that.

Actually, the very first game I played was this stupid Apple game that came with our Apple IIe, where an apple slides across the screen, and depending on if it was a solid apple or just the outlined apple, you ahve to press the appropriate apple key to open the trap door and have the apple slide through. I don't know if it was more of a gimmick than an actual game, but I remember playing it.

Edvard · « **Reply #74 on:** May 01, 2006, 10:56 PM »

Oooohhhh... I remember that one. Whoa. Does any of you Apple geezers remember the Apple II software company that would advertise in the computer magazines and they would include incredible one-liner programs in the ads? <something> Brothers, IIRC. Great stuff, multiple commands on one line seperated by :
*sigh* software used to be so simple...
