NaGa DeMon
« on: November 02, 2011, 06:24 PM »
Well, I was going to try my hand (and possibly fail) again to participate in NaNoWriMo.  But I'm not any more.  I found a more suited pursuit for the month of November.

NaGa DeMon!

(or National Game Design Month)

Short Excerpt from the link above:
Quote
National Game Design Month is about making and playing games. In 2011 during the month of November I want You to create and play your own boardgame, RPG, flash computer game, choose-your-own-adventure book, wargame, cardgame or other destracting novelty. The rules are simple – create, write and play (at least once) a game during the month.

I have many games that are the spark of an idea, but not completed- this will hopefully give me the impetus to complete at least one.  And I'll get some writing in with the sidebar blurbs.

So off I go!  I'll put a site up for it when I get into the groove, but I'm excited!

I think my half-baked idea last year for NANY was from being burnt out on NaNoWriMo, so this will give me more time to do both well, hopefully.

There's also One Month Game, in which you can challenge yourself to make a game in 4 weeks at any time of the year.

If anyone decides to make a physical boardgame/cardgame idea, I am willing to help you figure out how to use my PythonProtoCards scripts, which are designed for rapid prototyping of card games.

Well, I may never have completed NaNoWriMo, but I completed my NaGa DeMon project, Forgotten Heroes. It was actually the test bed for my system that I'm using for another project, and I'm pretty happy with it! I need to do some tweaking, but the rules played better than I expected, and my players seemed to enjoy it.

This implementation is a horror/suspense/investigation/thriller type of game, falling squarely into that area occupied by CoC, ToC, Esoterrorists, etc, where players seek out and eradicate the memory of ancient evils so that they can fade from existence. Once I do some editing (had a lot to do in a month, especially with a release at work imminent) I plan to conduct some more playtesting before releasing it and the underlying system. But I'm pretty stoked, and did want to announce it. :)

Wraith, is it a pen and paper RPG or a board game or video game or what?

It's a Pen and Paper RPG using a generic system.

I have a friend who wanted some motivation and an excuse to spend a month focused on programming a game, so he came up with NaGa ProMo: National Game Programming Month.

Today is the first day. Get coding!

You might want to make a separate thread for it to get increased exposure over burying it within an old thread...

Yeah, I considered it. But I figured it was related to NaGa DeMon. Also, NaGa ProMo is not even a developed enough concept to have its own web page explaining what it's all about. :-\ And posting here will renew this thread and give more exposure to NaGa DeMon as well.

(I know, this is past November.) I like that it's about "make absolutely any kind of game".  And it can be in any medium - I can't program!

The joker in me wants to make a game whose sole purpose is to create illegible "shop gamer talk".

Hmm...

"Oh yeah man, I was doing so well, I got a Devil's Lunch at Taco Bell (A meal combo designed to make the after tax price = $6.66), So that earned me a Devil's Advocate point, but the rules say that you can't Date Wendy (at Wendy's) for dinner by getting an Innocent Daughter Combo (Meal equaling $7.77) if you are already a Devil's Advocate. So I had to clear it by Crossing the Styx by getting either $11.11, $22.22, $33.33, etc, at the gas station, and each successive attempt must be at the increased value, so my van doesn't have a tank big enough to give me more than 3 tries..."
