Author Topic: Seriously, Youtube is becoming impossible! (Read 32,178 times)

Just a quick rant about how full of Adverts youtube videos are becoming.

Seriously, I just watched a 2 minute video clip and was having to keep clicking those annoying as hell "close" buttons that are so small, you miss half the video trying to aim on them...if you miss, your taken to the spam site, and when you finally hit the damn X, the video has finished.

Its driving me mental and I'm now in the process of finding a good alternative to youtube that doesn't drive you absolutely mental.

Have you tried Vimeo?

As for YouTube... Sigh... Yeah... They're becoming more and more obnoxious.

I've noticed that Google's ads are becoming more and more deceptive in different contexts.

Has YouTube made some major changes recently?

Because the FF Adblock Plus browser extension always used to do a good job of eliminating them. It's true those miserable adverts will reappear every so often. But the developer stays on top of things and updates regularly. So whenever adverts change tactics, the very next update to ABP (or one of its filter subscriptions) starts catching them. At least so far. Worst case (for me) has been having to put up with those ads for about a day before they magically vanish once again.

I take Adblock Plus for granted so much that I'm always stunned at what places like YouTube get up to whenever I use a browser that doesn't have it. Which is why Adblock Plus (and NoScript

) are the first extensions I load whenever I'm installing Firefox.

ABP and NoScript are two extensions I also regularly send in a contribution for. I'd have gone crazy by now without them.

Note: There's also versions available for Chrome and K-Meleon

if you're not a Firefox user.

DId you see Google have just been slammed with a $500m fine for allowing illegal pharmacy ads using adwords!

This is what happens when you have a video service developed by an advertising company.

Just FYI, I've been using Ad Muncher at home and Adblock at work...I haven't seen a youtube ad ever in my life.

What I'm annoyed by is the bandwidth choking. It's to a point where I just don't care for youtube that much anymore.

Deozaan · « **Reply #7 on:** August 26, 2011, 12:55 PM »

I've got Adblock Plus for Chrome installed and I pretty much always see the little ad at the bottom of videos a few seconds in. It's annoying.

But I only see them once at most per video.

Ad Muncher is terrific and takes care of the problem in all browsers, desktop RSS readers, etc..

Were they all youtube ads, or annotations added by the uploader? I've never seen more than 1 pre-video ad and 1 small overlay ad on a video. The uploader however can include as many annotation boxes as they wish, any or all of which can be links to spam sites.

Thumbs up from me as well. Bar none, one of the best pieces of software I've EVER purchased.

I've got a question about Ad Muncher's licensing:

Quote

License Usage Policy

The number of Ad Muncher licenses you purchase decides how many copies of Ad Muncher you can have installed at a time.

If you would like to move a license to a different system, Ad Muncher must be uninstalled from or reverted to trial mode on the first system before the license is used on the new one.

Do they somehow check and prevent you from installing it on more than one PC at a time or is it an "on your honor" type thing? Because what if your hardware breaks and you didn't uninstall or revert to trial mode and then you had to reinstall it on the same machine (with new HDD for example) or on a new machine?

I hate it when "DRM" counts a reinstall after a format as another one of my limited copies.

I keep forgeting that youtube has ads since I always install ADP and modify my hosts file whenever I reinstall windows.

Best bet is to ask them.

But any reputable company should be willing to reset their DRM to allow a reinstall if you lost a hard drive. Usually all it takes is phone call or a few e-mails to get it straightened out. I've only had one company, in all the years I've been using a PC, absolutely refuse to let me reinstall their product following a disk crash.

What is ADP and where do you get the information for what entries to add to your hosts file?

Admuncher here also, and after using it for a while I upgraded to the "lifetime license". (Just don’t know whose lifetime they're talkin's about!)

Another little Firefox add-on that I like for dealing with annoyances is Active Stop Button. It doesn't do much but when you occasionally have some irritating blinking icon or other animated thing, it generally works to stop the animation.

I too tend to forget that the web even has ads after using Adblock Plus for so long. I really should donate some money, it is the best. I don't mind a little bit of low-key advertising here and there but I am a grouchy curmudgeon when it comes to ads, and I actively avoid buying things that are heavily advertised. Which is kind of weird, because I'm not anti-shopping or anything like that, but something about in-your-face "our products am the bestest!!" ads really drive me nuts.
