Can I alter an exe's File Description?

[Curt]

AnyPhoto.jpg > mouse right-click > Open With... > "3D Image Commander a full-featured software that allows you to create advanced thumbnails with cool 3D styles and effects. Protect your copyrights with a copyright notice. Add text comments to any image. Create images with effects like 3D perspective, 3D"

-I am tired of this enormous waste of space; When I right-click a picture, I really don't want the list of editors to be just as wide as the monitor! Any way I can alter this exe's File Description, please?

Which OS?

This article at www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article02-500 (click here) might help.

Curt, look for the string in your registry under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER-Software-Microsoft-Windows-ShellNoRoam-MUICache

Edit: Apparently, the path is different starting from Vista.

nosh,

On my Windows 7 machine that registry key only has two entries for DOpus - nothing else. I think there must be another key that holds that info. Though I normally use the file extensions list in DOpus to change the names of file associations - that drives me nuts too Curt!!

Yikes! That edit wasn’t there in your post when I first typed my post, nosh! I started the post, then searched my registry, then finished the post and you had already answered me - talk about efficiency!!

[nosh]

Yep, have updated my post.

[nosh]

And your edit wasn't there when I posted my last post. We're going in circles here.

[J-Mac]

OK, I give up first!

Instinctively, certainly not by knowledge, I say this must be a matter of altering the particular executive file, (named "imagecommander3D.exe"), not the Operating System's registry. Because this computer has been visited by more than a thousand programs, but no other program has been giving me this problem - they all show up displaying their normal name only. But of course, only a relative few was ever used via "Open with..." or similar.

32-bits Vista Home Premium.

Oh, why did I absolutely have to post my rubbish before testing if the advices were right?! Thank you, nosh and J-Mac; you were right! Problem solved :-)

Windows does pick up that string from the .exe so you weren't entirely wrong. The program already had an entry in your registry, so if you modified the exe you'd have to locate and delete the existing entry and then do an... open with... browse to exe... before the modified string would come into effect.

You can use a resource editor like Resedit to take a peek inside your exe, if you're curious.

I should specify that I didn't use nirsoft's app, but went straight to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache, via Firefox > "Open in RegEdit", and then scrolled to 3D..., to delete the long story-like description, only leaving "3D Image Commander".

ResEdit wouldn't play along, as far as I could (not?) understand:

Edit:
Seems Windows® Platform SDK is needed.

Might have also found it with Universal Extractor?
